Temple of the Roguelike / Re: Maintenance tasks
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:55:04 PM »
* Rules of Behaviour updated:
  • Updated copy for rules 1, 1.1, 1.2, 2 and 2.3* (former 2.5)
  • Added rule 1.3 regarding non traditional roguelikes
  • Condensed rules 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 into new 2.2
  • Added section 4 for Content rules
  • Edited Moderation section, removing the reference to the Moderation log thread and the "Troll" title
  • Added Executive Actions section

New rules below:

1. Respect
1.1. Discrimination based on race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, or religious/spiritual beliefs will NOT be allowed.
1.2. Be respectful of the opinions of the other posters; if you disagree discuss in a civilized manner, and never resort to personal attacks.
1.3. The forums are open to the discussion of all subtypes of Roguelikes, including traditional turn-based roguelikes, action roguelikes ("roguelites") and, in general, procedural games with meta-progression. The debate of "what a roguelike is" has gone for ages, don't think you hold the ultimate truth about it. Do not bash people if their definition doesn't fit with yours.

2. Writing / Formatting
2.1. Make your best to write correct English, use punctuation marks, take your time to check the spelling. This is a turn-based world, there's no need to hurry
2.2. Do not deliberately make your posts inaccessible or hard to read (for example writing in ALL-CAPS, excesive formatting or "l337 writing")
2.3. Do not use foul language

4. Content
4.1. Discussion of topics unrelated to roguelikes, such as politics and religion is not allowed.
4.2. Advertising your roguelike is allowed, limit your promotion posts to 1 per week and keep a single thread for all your updates.

Moderation

Moderators at their discretion are enabled to proceed as follows:
  • Delete the content of offending posts and threads, replacing them with the text: "(Deleted as offensive)", at their discretion.
  • Delete subsequent posts regarding the discussion about deletion from the offender.

Executive Actions

Failure to comply with the above runs will result in warnings and ultimately a permanent ban if your behavior continues.

SSL certificate renewed. Off-topic subforum cleaned up.

I'm thinking on implementing some stronger measures for signing up, unless you guys are really looking forward to using services for essays or online casinos.

Well it was a 7DRL so, seven days :)

I think I released an update afterward to support also Android phones, but it didn't take much more.

Okay. My Firefox now shows a green padlock in the address bar. But a "connection is not secure" icon when editing this post.

d'oh, that was caused by a misconfiguration on the smilies URL causing a mixed content warning. Should be fixed now.

Not sure about the epiphany thing tho :/ would have to download and check

I *think* we have always been using SMF? we just had a very baaad hacking attempt or spambot situation, or both, and I could no longer keep the original theme. I keep thinking on bringing it back, even if the current one is more _readable_, it just has no personality.

I've been hearing great things about Android Studio and looks like one can build games for Android quite easily.. was wondering if anyone tried developing a roguelite / roguelike with it.

I did a pretty small 7DRL for it, targetting Android Smartwatches. It downloads a crazy amount of dependencies, but last time I checked it was the "official" and more supported way to create native Android apps, so once that was done, and if you are familiar with IntelliJ it just works well.

Then again I don't recall what it uses for graphics. For something more elaborate than this small app, I would probably use libgdx or similar.

Makes me want to go back and develop in Java, but only for a little bit.

Are you accessing via http, or https ?

That's why I feel we should keep an open discussion about it, to be able to point people that, for instance, permadeath was and still is an important aspect of roguelikes. If we are open to talk about other games, we have a chance to inform their players about the history of the roguelikes and how their game ended up being labeled as a roguelike even if it lacked critical aspects of the traditional ones.

Is this still happening?

We welcome discussion of all subtypes of Roguelikes, including Action Roguelikes (roguelites) and procedural games with metaprogression.

You are encouraged to learn more about the Traditional roguelikes, and how they differ from often mislabeled modern games.

Guys I love traditional roguelikes as much as you do. :)
