The Roguebasin / Roguebasin Featured Roguelikes Thread
« on: August 01, 2023, 01:57:29 PM »
Every month, I pick up a game to highlight at roguebasin's homepage.

Emerald Woods is a free, chill, farming and exploration roguelike without combat. There is no town; you are all alone in these vast woods.

You have started a new life in the tranquil Emerald Woods, miles away from any sign of human civilization.

In the distance you have seen some abandoned buildings, what secrets do they hide?

* No combat
* Farming: Prepare the ground and plant seeds in order to grow food.
* Collect Animals: Explore the land finding out how to capture the native fauna of the woods.
* Building: Gather wood and stone, and build shelters or a big cabin.
* Crafting: Create tools and furniture.
* Fishing: Build a raft and patiently get some fish.
* Cooking: Create delicious and nutritious dishes with local ingredients.
* Exploration: Explore woods, caverns, and lakes to find abandoned buildings full of secrets.

Version 0.1.2 is out!

After almost 3 years, here is a new juicy version, hope you enjoy it!

Play online for free at

The following are the major changes:

* Full-screen mode!
* Fishing v1: Build a raft and paddle inside a lake to get some fish.
* Campfires now provide light during the night.
* Crafting UX improvements: Imagine what you will make and then build a lot of them if you want.
* Improved immediate on-screen help: Complete relayout and addition of the critical Transform command to obtain seed from fruits, as well as the toggle between Exploration and Work modes.
* Increase hunger recovery for all items.
* Tweaks in animal spawning parameters.
* Fix critical bugs with an infinite inventory.
* Fix bugs with an empty inventory.

Share your adventures in the community and upload your videos! if there’s enough interest the new version might take less than 3 years :)

Temple of the Roguelike / Roguenet

One of the things I've wanted to do for a long time, but only got to start working on it about one year ago: A social space inspired by traditional roguelikes.

In there, you can chat with people using its own text-based conversation interface which supports both public spaces (every one you see will see what you write) and private spaces. There is no message log and there will never be. It's meant for you to engage in real-time.

In addition to this, I'm adding more areas for you to explore; there's currently a Museum of Roguelikes in construction, and in the future, I plan to allow people to build stuff.

Check it out at , no install required, just a modern browser. Also note there's no support for mobile currently.

All your comments and suggestions are welcome!

The Roguebasin / Criteria for Featured Roguelikes
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:54:22 AM »
I was wondering if there's an existing criterion for the Featured Roguelike in roguebasin's front page, I believe we should have something in place to rotate the games.

Temple of the Roguelike / Support page updated with current projects
« on: January 15, 2018, 06:22:33 PM »
Your contribution helps me pay hosting fees and other operation costs, as well as continue making roguetemple grow. See below for details

Current Infrastructure

- Private VPS at DigitalOcean for (120USD / Year)

- Blogging account at for (48USD / Year)

- Shared Hosting at for (Blog and other content) (252USD / Year) [NOTE: Not used exclusively for roguetemple]

Current Project: Migration from BlueHost

I am moving away all content from my personal bluehost account, this is to make mantaining the blog easier, increasing security on it and keeping cost controlled and separate.

The blog is now set up at, all data migrated and working. Pending: Finish redirects setup to avoid missing content.

Planned Projects

Revive the Roguemundi: Roguelike World Map. Back on 2008 we had a website where people could add themselves in and check if there were other roguelike enthusiasts in their home towns or any locations they were visiting. I'm planning to set it up again with a modern 2018 UI.

Other Announcements / Roguelike Expo as part of Roguelike Celebration 2018?
« on: November 20, 2017, 09:20:46 PM »
Hi all!

I started a discussion about this over twitter but I figured this would be a better place to discuss!

How about a having a "roguelike expo" as a sub-event on the roguelike celebration, where developers can display their games on booths / tables and players can go check them out, as an addition to the main talk schedule, while keeping the single track model for talks?

The idea for this is so that devs of new games can get feedback and promote their games, and existing games can show their new features.

Some options that have been considered:
  • Having it happen on a third day, may be half a day
  • Sacrificing the time for two or three talks for it, may be after lunch on Sunday

Would you as a player or as a developer be interested on it?

Temple of the Roguelike / moved to
« on: October 17, 2017, 02:48:56 AM »
As part of plans to revive the blog, I have moved it into the hosted service.

This shouldn't have a lot of impact over the forums, but if you guys could check and check everything's good, I'd appreciate it :)

7DRLs / PokemonRL 7DRLC 2017 Success
« on: April 04, 2017, 03:28:40 PM »
Well, I forgot to post about it here!

You can check the full story here: and play online here:

Your goal is to become a Pokemon master by defeating the gym leaders of the 8 cities in your region. Map is randomly generated, deploy your pokemon using "R" and a direction to fight wild pokemon and gain XP (or to weaken and catch them!) your pokemon will evolve and learn new skills.

Pokemon data is heavily based on the Gen 1 official dataset which I've been gathering from around the net. This is an open source project: contributions are welcome and you are also welcome to use the data in your own game.

Temple of the Roguelike / October 22 events
« on: October 22, 2016, 01:01:13 AM »
The forums had been unavailable for about 2 days, likely due to the common issues we had had previously with the server (disk full because of logs most of time)

However, on October 22 the server was "suspended" by, they suspected it was compromised by the Linux.Isiport trojan ( ) which would allow the server to be used for DDoS attacks (likely because of the massive attacks that happened that same day) so they took it down. After some talking with their support team I was able to get the node restarted in recovery mode so I could go in and try to fix and recover stuff.

Luckily I was able to recover the most precious data which was the forums database. I almost screw up since in order to dump the data I had to reinstall mysql server and the data files for the pre-existing databases were not overwritten (they were safe on a mounted volume). That was a very close call, for some minutes I thought we had lost the entire forums database.

Then I was forced to do something I had pending doing for a long time: Moving again the forums to a new private server.

We are now running in our own node at digital ocean, this node is EXCLUSIVE for roguetemple, thanks to your contributions. This will help isolate any errors and prevent other apps from taking the site down. I'm also going to set up automated backups so our data is safe. As always please contribute if you can to make our infrastructure ever stronger!
