There's also been a ton of spam on the forums, as you can see in the "recent posts" index. Is there anything we can do as a community to help solve this? It really annoys me to no end to see almost entire pages of spam - almost as much spam as legitimate content or more in some pages. It makes me feel the site is not taken care of, even if I know that in practice it isn't that big of a deal.

I've also read a couple of the messages because it intrigued me that they don't seem to have links in them and from what I've seen they also don't seem to endorse any particular product / location / service. I mean, what the hell? What is the point of spam if you're not even advertising anything?

@javelinrl - bots are bots. I remember, we had bot-attack some time ago on polish adom forum. Most of them just pretended to be users by... copypasting old posts. Don't know what was the point of existing such a bots.
In general, I think that few active (and willing) users could obtain moderation access.

Also, I'd like to talk about roguebasin. People are still updating news, creating new pages, etc., but there are, say, problems with roguebasin maintenance. For example, until 1 september 2016, there were still hyperlinks to 7DRL 2015! (instead 2016, I mean) Same for IRDC, events list, etc. Slash, as far as I know you are primary maintainer of roguebasin. Would you be willing to give someone permissions to edit main page?

Well, I'm looking at the list of sysyop and I dunno if any of them would be in for assuming a more active "editor" role for roguebasin http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&group=sysop

If some's really interested on working on it, and preferably has a record of activity and invovlement in the roguelike community, I'd gladly give access.

The 'database' link on Temple of the Roguelike and the 'searchable database' link on Rogue Basin both point to the old, dead IRLDB.

Okay. My Firefox now shows a green padlock in the address bar. But a "connection is not secure" icon when editing this post, however. And the Epiphany browser still refuses to connect. At this point, I'm wondering if that one is actually a bug on my end, Epiphany has been acting up lately :P I'm pasting some details below, in case that can help you.

As always,

In my new pc (Windows 10) Firefox was showing a warning page before SSL update, I was just thinking maybe it's one of reasons why people don't visit this forum... but now it works ok, except "quick login" from top left area still doesn't work (again, maybe people think the login is broken and just leave the forum?).

Okay. My Firefox now shows a green padlock in the address bar. But a "connection is not secure" icon when editing this post.

d'oh, that was caused by a misconfiguration on the smilies URL causing a mixed content warning. Should be fixed now.

Not sure about the epiphany thing tho :/ would have to download and check

SSL certificate renewed. Off-topic subforum cleaned up.

I'm thinking on implementing some stronger measures for signing up, unless you guys are really looking forward to using services for essays or online casinos.

Thanks for that and good to hear you're still around.
Could a bunch of the OGs (e.g. minotaur, getter, darren, vanguard, z, corremn, krice, myself etc) (nah maybe not krice) be enabled to delete posts so we cut spam as soon as we notice it?

Regarding that, I'm mostly lurking these days, but would be willing to join a task force like that, and make to sure to visit more frequently, if we had well defined rules to go by (strictly to ban bots/spam, include safety valves like an option for banned users to challenge the decision, etc). That said, it seems to me that getter is already doing a tremendous amount of work to keep most parts of the forums clean from spam bots. But the off topic section is a pretty sad sight overall these days, and I've also seen a few perfectly sensible threads getting derailed by bots.
