Temple of the Roguelike / Roguenet

One of the things I've wanted to do for a long time, but only got to start working on it about one year ago: A social space inspired by traditional roguelikes.

In there, you can chat with people using its own text-based conversation interface which supports both public spaces (every one you see will see what you write) and private spaces. There is no message log and there will never be. It's meant for you to engage in real-time.

In addition to this, I'm adding more areas for you to explore; there's currently a Museum of Roguelikes in construction, and in the future, I plan to allow people to build stuff.

Check it out at https://roguetemple.com/net/ , no install required, just a modern browser. Also note there's no support for mobile currently.

All your comments and suggestions are welcome!

The Roguebasin / Criteria for Featured Roguelikes
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:54:22 AM »
I was wondering if there's an existing criterion for the Featured Roguelike in roguebasin's front page, I believe we should have something in place to rotate the games.

I removed Krice mostly because of #1 and how it impacted the growth of the forums. He was given enough warnings and caused enough damage thru the years.

As for #2, I have never asked anyone to be "politically correct", however, the rules have always been clear on acting respectfully and not discriminating against others which I believe Krice did many times to the point he felt pretty comfortable doing it here.

As for the off-topic forum, While I agree discussion about other genres of games would be a nice thing to have, I decided to disable them because discussion there easily deviated to non-game related issues which I frankly don't have the energy to moderate over (plus it was the favorite nesting place of the damn spambots). Maybe we could have a "Other Games" board, or at least experiment a bit on it.

It's probably just spambots. Which sucks pretty bad, I'd love to only have legit accounts so we could have a better measure of the size of our community there.

Early Dev / Re: this is a dead forum

I've got some interesting activities planned :)

It's just a bit busy with client work, NovaMundi (my own project), family and covid19 all around.

But I'll get to it :)

Temple of the Roguelike / Re: Maintenance and codex updates

Thank you! I have some nice plans for the temple including a modern MUD kind of thing, and reviving the roguemundi. But before diving into that I felt these actions were appropriate and needed (it's never easy)

I'm guessing you are referring to the changes in the board structure? for a long time I had already mentioned we welcomed discussion of non-traditional roguelikes, so this was just a more direct action to back those words.

I love traditional, turn-based, grid-based, character-display, perma-death, rogue-likes, but I strongly believe allowing discussions of a broader type of games that share fundamental features will help evolve both types of games, and may also make more people know about these traditional games we love.

I'm actively trying to _teach_ people about these "traditional roguelikes", instead of punishing them for not fitting my personal take of the genre, I want to pique their interest if they ever manage to land into the forums ("what's with that background image, what does it represent?"), I believe both worlds have a lot to learn from each other.

12
(hope it's not incorrect to bump a thread from 2016...it's still on the first page of the forum. Am I looking at the right forum for traditional roguelikes?)

Yup, it's ok to necromance threads, we need to revive discussion :)

You are not acting in accordance to The Rules (1.2, 1.3 and 2.3). This thread will be locked and then archived.

There is no authoritative way to define what is and what is not a roguelike. This classification is based on my interpretation which stems from my informal research on the history of the roguelike term.
