I'm actually a lawyer as well, and the best answer as to whether the code and art would be considered separate is "maybe". There's no easy answer and if you were gonna make money off it then you'd be smart to pay money for advice. But no one here is making money from anything, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I guess that means Creative Commons didn't do their job well.

Eh, it's probably good enough, or at least as good as it's going to get. The problem is that you need to try and enforce it in every jurisdiction between here and South Sudan, which is literally impossible. There will inevitably be different interpretations put on the same words decided in different courts all over the world, particularly in the less mature jurisdictions.

Pat I do believe the legal term you are searching for is 'cluster fuck'...or 'varying and inconsistent interpretations across jurisdictions.'

Well, in any event, it's a beautiful tileset.
Also goes by the name of "NANOsoldierEnke"
Ever notice how nobody can read anyone else's handwriting? That probably means that the Bill of Rights is a detailed order for party supplies, there is no mention of any Congress, and the president's only duty is "to blow the horn of cheese". I think that.

CC-SA and related licenses are "viral", but art is separate from code. Any alterations to the tileset would have to be CC-SA, but the code can be under any license - public domain/CC-0, MIT, GPL, all rights reserved/closed, whatever. If you need to make large additions for your own game, you can put them in separate files and license them however you want.
Please, please, show me where in the license it says this.  Because if it doesn't, you're harming people who by using something licensed this way, will find out that they've subsequently licensed their derivative work under the same sharealike terms.

I have no idea where you got this interpretation.

Yes, definitely.  And it's great for the OP to provide it for people to use like this.  If I seem to be quite concerned over the confusion about the license, it's because there are people in this thread who have already shown misunderstandings about what the license means for someone who uses this.  In any case, thanks OP!

yeah, let's not get sidetracked - the whole reason I came into this thread was because my game just so happens to use 16x16 tiles and I'll definitely be using some of these.

Ahhhh! Intellectual property discussions! Run for the hills! :o

...But in all due seriousness, I really only chose this license because it's the most strict one OpenGameArt provides (and even then it isn't very strict). I really won't mind if people try and pawn this tileset off as their own, because they really wouldn't be able to do it when it's out there for free. :D Anyways, new update coming your way!

== UPDATE 2/9/14 ==
 - Blood, slime, water and lava splatterings.
 - 20 new magic effects and 2 rope effects.
 - 3 new walls (smooth, shiny, crystalline) with accompanying pits and palettes.
 - Tons of new aquatics, humanoids, quadrapeds and other creatures.
 - Created new "Avians" category and shortened all file names.
 - A few more pieces of decor including 6 candles and 8 beds.
 - Farmland with 16 accompanying crops and food.
 - Stone walls, 4 villages, 4 castles and 4 bridges for overworld.

I'm going for that size as well for my 7DRL this year.

That's a gorgeous (and comprehensive!) tileset.  I always try to make my own tiles if I possibly can, but I'm still going to hang onto a copy of this one just so I can flick through it for inspiration every now and then.

Thanks! Even if people aren't using it it's nice to see my tileset is sparking some ideas for new features and such. :D

Is there any chance for wall tiles without perspective? Some roguelike engines do not make any difference between horizontal and vertical walls, such as angband. I mean that all walls are of '#' type, not '-' and '|'.

I'd say that's definitely a possibility! I can understand where you're coming from. Currently working on making some direction-independent wall tiles, which I'll include in the next update. If you want to make them before the update, though. It's pretty easy.

Find the horizontal tiles of a wallset, and copy the bottom 16x12 pixels of one. Copy that into it's own grid space then above that, paste the bottom 16x4 pixels of the same tile. You should end up with something exactly like the horizontal wall tiles except without the large black band along the top.

Yeah. I also found it pretty good to have a horizontal wall tile and then copy the bottom half and replace with it the upper half so the 16x16 tile is made from two identical 16x8 parts.

Here's some quick testing I made in my project https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/95372567/PlatinoTilesTest.png
