Design / The best innovative gameplay mechanics ever noticed in 7DRL games
« on: February 07, 2023, 06:45:00 PM »
7DRL is great also because it provides an opportunity to expertiment completely new gameplay mechanics.
What are your favourites?
Some awesome ones I remember:

- Darkness
The fact that darkness gradually turns you mad.. you start hallucinating stuff.. and mind becomes matter.. truly metaphysical, innovative, and also fun to play.

- A Quest Too Far
Instead of grinding your way to minmaxxing your character, you start already strong and well equipped, and your strenght vanishes the more time you spend in the dungeon. Innovative and fun.

- Kobolds
Fight your way through a horde of kobolds.. who keeps throwing small missiles at you, insulting, and evade you. Very fun.

Player's Plaza / NFT roguelike art
« on: March 16, 2021, 07:08:37 AM »
I am quite familiar with making NFT (non-fungible tokens in the ethereum network) out of jpg images and sell them on decentralized marketplaces.
Since there is a good amount of roguelikes inspired digital art around, was wondering if anyone could be interested to set up some sort of roguelike art gallery and see how we go?
Preferrably with some digital artist here who has already some twitter (and maybe even instagram) following.
Cost to mint NFTs is higher than normal because of ETH's blockchain congestion but not too high anyway. Would be nice to get Slash's endorsement in order to get part of the profits back to RogueTemple and see if we can re-energize this place as well.

Great, thanks Slash

I removed Krice mostly because of #1 and how it impacted the growth of the forums. He was given enough warnings and caused enough damage thru the years.

As for #2, I have never asked anyone to be "politically correct", however, the rules have always been clear on acting respectfully and not discriminating against others which I believe Krice did many times to the point he felt pretty comfortable doing it here.

As for the off-topic forum, While I agree discussion about other genres of games would be a nice thing to have, I decided to disable them because discussion there easily deviated to non-game related issues which I frankly don't have the energy to moderate over (plus it was the favorite nesting place of the damn spambots). Maybe we could have a "Other Games" board, or at least experiment a bit on it.

Glad to hear him not being woke enough was not part of the reason he was banned.

Could we restore the off-topic room and keep it locked? As there were some pretty good old threads.

No, the point I'm making is that whether we can agree or disagree about kicking Krice out, let's make that decision being the consequence of Krice having been an asshole to users and NOT of him not having been woke enough. (and also let's get the off-topic section back)
The videogame industry is already woke / pozzed enough, and that is a result of it needing money to survive. Since with roguelikes there's usually less money involved, we don't need that shit here.

There's two sides about Krice for which he was criticized.
1. One is him treating newbies like crap and making the forum unhospitable for them. Same treatment was given to well known devs or community members. To which I agree Krice should have been reprimanded long time ago - perhaps not exhiled, just temporary bans and reminded of basic rules to keep good vibes in the community. I also didn't like him in the beginning; had to learn to tolerate him with time - but have to admit he would make interesting interventions in the forum from time to time.
2. The other is Krice not alligning with the current politically correct globohomo trend in videogames, for which he has also received a fair degree of criticism by some. Well, that shouldn't be an issue in my book. He had his views, whatever. There's already enough politically correctness in videogames. Thing is, Krice genuinely liked roguelikes. Was just a bit autistic, there was no reason to remove the off-topic section altogether.
There were plenty of good threads on non-roguelike videogames and now they are all gone forever?

Programming / How to hire roguelike devs?

Say I was looking to hire someone to develop an android roguelike for me, what would be a good place to look and how much would I expect to pay per hour?

SSL certificate renewed. Off-topic subforum cleaned up.

I'm thinking on implementing some stronger measures for signing up, unless you guys are really looking forward to using services for essays or online casinos.

Thanks for that and good to hear you're still around.
Could a bunch of the OGs (e.g. minotaur, getter, darren, vanguard, z, corremn, krice, myself etc) (nah maybe not krice) be enabled to delete posts so we cut spam as soon as we notice it?

CDProjectRed becomes Poland #1 valuable listed firm.. Marcin Iwinski now a billionaire.
Bit of cherrypicking here but I'm always happy when I see these kind of news.

The problem is covid-19 is simply a spark, a catalyst, a scapegoat to endorse the administration of a higher dose of the same drugs which are already determining the grounds for a major recession.

I agree that many governments are riding the wave in order to be more governing and govern harder. Which is a bad thing. Laws being passed so governments cannot be criticized for their management of the crisis, massive socialization of industries...  some ministers have given the order to shoot at people who is troublesome during confinement period.

But I still sustain that the virus is its own crisis. Will it aggravate a different, impending crisis? Maybe, maybe not. But the virus is a very destructive agent and deserves to be considered as such.

My point takes into account all of the bad neokeynesian interventionist policies we have had since the last 11 years, not just the recent, current and future measures to tackle covid-19.

Yes world governments have the duty to protect their citizens from this destructive agent but personally I'd tackle something with low mortality rate and high transmission rate (which R0 in the 2.5ish range means) just by selective isolation of the more at risk, i.e. immunocompromised individuals as opposed to the entire population of planet earth.

Just to clarify, I don't think the virus will be the reason, but only the trigger for this incoming recession.
Covid-19 is being used by world governments as an excuse to increase monetary supply and central banks balance sheets.. boundless government spending and whatnot, keeping up drugging the economy. This is why I believe that once the virus won't be an issue anymore, the world would not return to pre-crisis conditions.

Anyway stock prices are still kinda oversold; I'd expect S&P500 to keep bouncing up a bit more, say 2700-2800ish range but then start dropping again. 11 years of highly drugged and hyperleveraged bull market won't be corrected with a quick 1 month bear market.

From my calculations, April could possibly still be good for stocks (some seasonal strenght as well - but commercials still heavily short which isn't a good sign) but after that I can see things only dropping until an absolute bottom around 2022. Meanwhile, more and more companies will be downgraded by moodys and emerging markets will be wrecked by default fuck-circles.

Something to take into account is Trump and the 4th Nov 2020 elections. He will do all he can to get there with markets in good conditions. Thus another round of QE is a given, probably somewhere in July. And likely free monthly allowance to all US citizens, which needless to say won't be good for the USD.
You can argue that other countries and central banks might also follow Trump's lead in populism and print their asses out? Oh yeah that might be the case. What would then happen is that currencies would keep devaluing against one another, and mid term all will devalue against gold - which I like but as mentioned in the first post is not the only way one could make money out of this.

Still no updates since the 6th March 2020 Tomb of Eaters release.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/333640/allnews/

Played the game a bit, some nice improvements but still that sandboxy/unfinishy feel, and some of the same old bugs/glitches still present (e.g. whenever I venture in goddam bethesda susa the game slows so much I can actually feel how cold the levels are ffs).
