Classic Roguelikes / Re: Angband variants table
« on: April 01, 2020, 02:28:11 AM »
Maybe because vanilla angband is so famous yet incredibly boring and unfun that everyone can easily have a go and improve it signficantly in a few lines of code?

Great to hear development of this gem is still up and going.
I quite like polybot-7 as well.

As the economist JR Hicks opined, "Really catastrophic depression is most unlikely to occur as a result of the simple operation of real accelerator mechanism; it is likely to occur when there is profound monetary instability – when the rot in the monetary system goes very deep."
Coronavirus will just be the spark for the coming great depression.
Stocks might keep soaring for some days or weeks but then they'll drop even further.
Usually you get 40% drops followed by some rebound, and then other legs down.
I expect the S&P500 bottom to be in the 500 area so still long way to go. The markets will be drugged with stimulus packages of all sorts in the meanwhile, which will give temporary boosts and hope; instead of playing to pick falling knives, a way to invest into this now would be in adirectional trades through the use of options, i.e. investing in volatility with strategies such as the strangle or straddle.

Thoughts?

Probably UK's initial plan to just keep indoors the 60+ would have done the trick since without them the ICU would be more than enough in most countries.
It's very highly contagious but symtpoms are mild; unfortunately permanent solutions are being taken for a temporary problem and one big one will be the upcoming recession (which I believe will be sparked, but not determined by this virus). Meanwhile some people here won't mind getting paid by their governemnt to stay home, learn to code, play roguelikes.
Even work at home arrangements aren't too bad. Away from all the shitty colleagues and their chit chat, no commute, no neon lights, no slow computers and so on. Would be good if after the virus humanity will realize that working at home is actually better in most cases and the trend had to continue (happier staff, less expenses, less liabilities, etc).

Interesting, gonna try this one.

I expect:

- countries with low IQ / blacks / guns / individualism (welcome to burgerland, matter of days before it surpasses china in number of cases) to face enormous social unrest, with armies deployed on streets and riots; stay tuned on bestgore for some exciting videos (imagine katrina looters x100 the intensity and violence, adom / caves of qud style with retrofuturistic tribes and so on);

- Bill and Melissa Gate Foundation to announce they have a vaccine in 2-3 weeks from now once mass panic will be reached and make a fuckton of money selling it to governments; anyone questioning whether they had it in the first place will be tagged as domestic conspiratard;

- Trump to lead the trend in populistic helicopter money measures which will make everyone happy and likely get him reelected in Nov 2020 at the cost of a major world recession;

- stock prices will not necessarily drop or raise but I expect volatility.

Development Process & non-technical / Re: I am new and unsure.

As for developing a game, I would consider taking an existing one that is close to your vision, and building from there. Another people has already done the heavy lifting for you. Take what you like and rm -rf what you don't :-P

Any notable major roguelike with open source code you can think of?

What a great thread.

I did manage to play some RPG with my friends but was always games I created. Only occasional games of GURPS and DnD.

Since my mid 20s completely stopped due to career, which sucks. But as an adult it's difficult to get into a nice group of players without getting socially rejected to a degree. Maybe it's just my insecurity, not sure.

They say:
When you are 20 years old you are obsessed with what others think of you.
When you become 40, you stop caring.
When you turn 60, you realize they weren't really paying attention to you anyway.

But I utterly dislike the majority of people who go to those shops where they sell MTG cards, Warhammer figurines etc. It's like 90% of them have bad breath, very few so-so girls who think they're big deal, and autism everywhere.
So I just prefer to stay home and play the good old DoomRL, Caves of Qud, Adom, Infra Arcana and so on and on.

Might eventually pick up python + libtcod tutorial or c + curses library but the idea since I am on ok money is to find a dev who will do the hard yakka for money.

@mouser: true, more of a roguelite tho.

Not to start an I-am-hollier-than-thou flame, but I am curious. What makes Hyper Rogue a roguelite instead of a roguelike in your opinion?

Low complexity.

Spain is not only hot but also mostly white (except Barcelone perhaps) if that's what you're looking for. No jobs though if you're looking to find an income locally. It's just perfect to go to spend a few weeks/months of idle time without paying much and enjoy the nice culture.
Poland less warm than Spain but also mostly white - not sure about their jobs situation. Seems to be quite prolific in regards to gaming and roguelikes - you'll be able to meet Kornel Kisielewicz and other great devs if you move there.

Someone hacked Skeletor's account? I bet that link runs viruses. Don't click it.

Nah that's still me Krice - never had issues with pastebin.

But damn so many spam accounts posting dodgy links these days on roguetemple.

Design / Against the concept of balance
« on: April 21, 2019, 10:11:06 AM »
Balance is overrated.
I could easily argue that  good game design shall not be afraid of unfairness and unbalance but rather deal with them dynamically and reward players who are able to find order in chaos.

Have a look at what happened to an extremely varied and fun game, when the devs decided to pursue above all balance: https://www.reddit.com/r/roguelikes/comments/axyr0l/do_you_guys_think_balancing_dcss_kind_of_ruined/
Or the various "level matching" enemies of all those mainstream games which feel really like movies rather than games (Witcher 3, Skyrim..).

As a roguelike lover, I like the deus ex machina, original crazy solutions to apparently unsolvable situations.
The scarecrow of an unbeatable tank-like PC shall be embraced and addressed with further degree of chaos, not by limiting the latter.

Thanks guys.

Slashie, how long did it took you to make RoK with AndroidStudio?
