So yeah, I had about a lot of frustrations with these games for a really really long time. Now, I am finding that there are quite a few that I play quite a bit. Some I have managed to beat. Some I probably wont beat, but are still fun.

These are the ones I beat-

Diablo Rlike-4 Hours long
Doom the Rlike -2 hours long
Dungeon Fray-I acquired enough powerful stats I couldnt be defeated.

Im currently playing tile rogue which is basically the original rogue with 2nd edition d and d for aclass. Its hard as shit but a lot of fun.

Usually I like the games that have-

Sound enough for attacks and thats it, if music then fine but doesnt need it
Not longer than 6 hours so probably coffeebreak roguelike

Does anyone know of any other roguelikes that would be cool.

Classic Roguelikes / Just Completed Doom RL-I am proud of myself
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:22:37 AM »
So yeah, while I dont think it was ever possible, I managed to complete Doom the Rlike on easy difficulty with a scout that reached lvl 9 specializing in pistols. The game was actually so good I think I might like to play something like it. However I dont think there is another roguelike other than 3 in mind that Ive played./

The 3 things it would have to have is this

-At least a graphic like Cardinal Quest, DoomRl or Through. NO ASCI

-Fastpaced combat like those mentioned games. I didnt find tome to be fun as I didnt understand it.

-Be completable in a short time to make more replay value.

I dont really care about graphics but that stuff they used to use is just too much for my eyes.

They dont even have to be major roguelikes or even moderately popular. All I know is that there needs to be more of these games.

Last time I was here I was pissed for losing, now I worship it with scittles and flying colors!

Lol. I was just saying that losing a character after less than an hour is 'fun' and makes me want to play again. Losing one after a few hours just makes me want to walk away. Especially if we are playing DiabloIII, and I die due to server lag.

Yeah you said it better than how I feel. I played Cardinal Quest with a warrior and its all easy for the first 4 floors and then I died. It was cool though because it took 30-45 minutes. I wouldnt even care if I lost 2 hours. Its just when I lose after I start liking the characters progress and get really far is what causes me to go crazy. 2 and a half to 3 hours into it.

Keep in mind, without the frustrations, Cardinal Quest, Doom the Rlike, and Probably the Pit RL are some of my best roleplaying experiences Ive had, even with the frustration. I feel that I can make my characters more humanistic as if they will succeed. The only thing I dred is that I have never succeeded at a rlike.

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn-based) / Anyone play-The Pit?
« on: April 10, 2013, 07:39:12 PM »
This game looks and sounds just awesome. I played through the tutorial and the movement/stat system is wicked cool. I might have to pick this up although I heard it is brutally hard. Heh.

Has anyone played this or managed to defeat the main mission of this game?

Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of fun to be had with games like that. Its just not as fun when you realize that you just lost all those hours of time spent. The reason why it isn't fun for me, is that I am the type of person that will probably make the same mistakes over and over again. If it was real time roguelike with permadeath, I probably won't make the mistakes. With turn based permadeath-the chances of me finishing one of those games is slim to none.

I still agree with you guys on what is and isn't a rogue like, but  just wish that I could get better at those games. Probably won't :(

Its kind of lame for me because I really liked getting into the game demo "The Pit", but the one thing keeping me from buying it is the thing that will likely make it impossible to complete the game on easy. Its too bad because Dredmor allows you to play it however you want. Its a shame that one thing can't be made as an option. I used to play Doom the Rl but it got boring to play back and forth because whats the point of playing a game where my character will expire at any time.

Classic Roguelikes / Any Non-perma death Rlikes?

I have been loving dungeons of dredmor lately not just because of its incredibly awesome skill/lvling system, but because it gives you the option of not having permadeath. I know many will automatically label me as a coward and weak gamer, but I find that I can enjoy the game a bit more.

Does anyone know of any rogue likes like dredmor that give the option to not have it? Its a shame because rogue likes in general have more roleplaying/stats and what not than most regular rpgs Ive played. Gawd!!

Yeah melee is a lot of fun because you have to really strategize your charge and finesse/hug the walls stay towards the shadows.

I hope that sometime in the future, aliens rl will get a graphics overhaul like Doom rl. That would just awesome as that has a lot of potential as well.

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn-based) / Is Doom RL just that awesome?
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:07:12 PM »
Ive been playing this game a lot and its a lot of fun. Im making good progress with this game and I learn which builds work and which ones dont. My first char wasnt serious and so I didnt get far. However, my 2nd nearly beat the game and I learned a good deal about which traits to choose. Now Im on my 3rd character and think I will get even further with a 3rd char.

Does anyone else play this game? I have been having a blast and although its hard, its not too hard. Just watch out for those pain elementals. They're scary.

Its crazy that some people might consider certain games to be rlikes. I would say games like Diablo 1, Torchlight, and other realtime rpgs not be considered a roguelike. For me its turnbased, stat heavy, permadeath enhanced, light rpgs.

Now that I think of it. I think if you wanted to make this game winable for all classes, I would add another difficulty and make an easy difficulty. As it stands I doubt I will go back to this game because its just too brutal. I did much of what I was supposed to do with powerups but died anyway.

I also think that not having to place stat points is a mistake as well. If this game was easier to win it would make sense to not have stats. However not having stats to place kind of defeats the purpose of almost any game. It's the same reason I wont go back to Baldurs Gate, there are no skill/stat combinations whatsoever. You pick a class and nothing changes. :(

Please note-I am not trolling against this game. I think that it has all the markings of a good game. The classes are cool, the setting is cool, the sounds and everything is good. I just feel that a few things would be good for change in the future.

Programming / Re: Roguelike graphics project
« on: February 19, 2013, 04:04:14 PM »
As for graphics Im of the belief that they dont really need to be that great. Doom RL graphics are fine for me. What I find makes all the difference is how easy the game is to use and the leveling system. The reason why Doom RL is fun for me is that the game is easy to use, its got an awesome and very fluid leveling system and everything else is awesome too. Here's to hoping Kornel works on Aliens RL next making it just like Doom!

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn-based) / Re: Tips on easy-to-learn roguelikes?
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:11:17 PM »
I found that TOME was way too technical. I first started playing once after printing out sheets of all the stats and skills that the game had. I thought after a while that maybe too technical of a game to just get into.

I hope that someday I can eventually get to complete Cardinal Quest as that game is really a lot of fun. Its hard as anything, but something brings me back to it all the time.

They should make more roguelikes like that.

Other Announcements / Re: Let's Play... a Bunch of Roguelikes!
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:01:23 PM »
The funny thing about roguelikes is that you can play them for a bunch of times, get destroyed, ragequit, only to be back a few weeks later as if it didnt happen. I would say that the best feature of them is the time it really takes to complete. The game might be 8-12 hours long (like Cardinal Quest), but because you lost 7 characters in the process-this becomes 30-40 hours time total.
