Just Completed Doom RL-I am proud of myself
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:22:37 AM »
So yeah, while I dont think it was ever possible, I managed to complete Doom the Rlike on easy difficulty with a scout that reached lvl 9 specializing in pistols. The game was actually so good I think I might like to play something like it. However I dont think there is another roguelike other than 3 in mind that Ive played./

The 3 things it would have to have is this

-At least a graphic like Cardinal Quest, DoomRl or Through. NO ASCI

-Fastpaced combat like those mentioned games. I didnt find tome to be fun as I didnt understand it.

-Be completable in a short time to make more replay value.

I dont really care about graphics but that stuff they used to use is just too much for my eyes.

They dont even have to be major roguelikes or even moderately popular. All I know is that there needs to be more of these games.

Last time I was here I was pissed for losing, now I worship it with scittles and flying colors!

You should try the original Doom in which this "roguelike" is based on. It's exactly what you are looking for.

DoomRL is definitely one of the "best in class" roguelikes out there.  The theme is a tribute to old Doom FPS game but the mechanics and actual gameplay are undeniably roguelike.  It has great pacing, adjustable challenge level, an interesting item system, and a very nicely done character progression model.

The only point I have against it is that it seems to be closed source.  Still, I'm hoping to see the sequel "Jupiter Hell" before too long.

Anyhow congrats on your success, now up the difficulty and try some other character types :)  Also, the awards system unlocks some challenge games that keep the game interesting and challenging for a long time.

The recommendation that springs to mind, considering your criteria, is Hellspace from this year's 7DRL contest. You can download it from Numeron's website. It's graphical, simple to play, fast paced, and short. Like DoomRL, Hellspace also avoids some common roguelike tropes (identification of items, etc).

I don't remember any games that would fit all those things right now but let me second congratulations for scoring a win. Perhaps post mortem of your doomguy next time.
