This is not hypocrisy, just some random thoughts :). Of course it's not a problem to switch to tarballs, if you really miss them so much. I don't. I also think that using any Linux distribution without knowing a thing about file permissions is next to impossible. But nevertheless the oncoming version of Untitled (or how it will be called) will be stored in tar.gz. Lesson learned.

(By the way Michał, where is your patriotism? One Polish game is going to conquer the world and you are refusing to play it just because the file format is not your favorite one? ;) )

I half expect this chapter of it all to be translated into a referential crafting mini-quest in some future update.

Why not :).

the "tutorials" are just little popups that you can just hit escape to remove and only show up once.  I guess I can add an option to make them never come up, but the game would be difficulty without that initial knowledge flow in my opinion

You can add an option to skip tutorials to the character creation menu. I'd really appreciate it. I hate being forced into tutorials, even if they are "just little popups". Yes, the game is extremely difficult without an introdction to your unique world, your ideas and your rules. But somehow I prefer being completely lost (yet free) to being forced to anything. The rebellious side of my nature, I guess :).

"too many shooting opponents" is a complaint I get from people used to standard roguelikes.  almost every creature, including melee ones, have ranged attacks.  learning how to deal with that is the whole point of the game

I understand that and I'm not trying to convince you to throw ranged attacks away. But the difference between annoyance and challenge is very subtle. Challenges can be avoided, while annoyances cannot. If you placed shooting enemies only in *some* levels, it would be perceived as a challenge to get past them. Now they are everywhere, so this is just a turn off.

Good things:
  • very robust GUI
  • music
  • I like the idea of playing as one of the monsters

Bad things:
  • no saving
  • the keyboard layout is really bad
  • random monster names
  • too many shooting opponents
  • I'm forced to go through tutorials

I'd love to provide more feedback, but I'm afraid that without saving game it is currently impossible. But the general impression is very good. I hope you'll implement saving soon :).

People are becoming so lazy nowadays. I remember my first encounter with the RAR file format, some like 15 years ago. The game was stored on 40 floppy disks or so, each one contained a RAR archive. I had to find a program called "unrar", learn how to use it, copy all of the floppy content to a hard disk, note down the damaged floppies (if you had something on 40 floppy disks, 5 out of them would always be damaged), request from a buddy to copy those damaged disks again (and hope that he'll copy the right ones), wait until another day, bring home new 5 disks, attempt to copy them to a hard disk, find out that 2 of them are still damaged... Yeah, those were the days. And now we download a game and we are too lazy to run it. Myself I currently have about ten new roguelikes I have recently downloaded but did not find time to unpack and play them. That's what internet has done to us :).

Okay, I'm already convinced :). Will need some time to choose the best name, though.

I shall try again some other day. Right now all my motivation to try the game out was killed.

Oh no, that's not the proper point of view. The Linux version just contain an extra quest. You need to obtain an ancient artifact called RAR, then use it to access the secret dungeon, Archive. There a powerful mage lives under the name of Chmod. He knows a legendary magical spell a+x which will open the gateway to all other quests.

@Mosenzov: Many thanks for the feedback!

I set my stats, age, and such first. Kind of wish there was a way to tell what things such as "Appearance" or "Founding" do. Also, does age do anything, or is it just there?

Yes, I should definitively add some tips to that window. Currently Age does not do anything and neither does Appearance, that could be quite confusing for a player, I must admit.

I moved around, but I couldn't figure out the controls other than that. After checking the controls screen, I can safely say I don't like them. Not sure why you really need to add "Shift" or "Ctrl" into so many commands.

I could assign those commands to other, "free" letters, but I would be harder to remember (at least for me). Anyway I plan to add a feature for customizing keyboard layout, so that [almost] everybody should be happy.

After going in, I tried to fire some arrows with my bow at some orcs and skeletons, but they did absolutely nothing, and the baddies ended up killing me.

Yeah, I always liked swords more so I didn't pay much attention to different types of weapons... My bad. Bows are currently much more difficult to master than "ordinary" weapons. Generally the game needs more balancing, I guess.

What really annoyed me is that whenever I check my inventory (i) I have to move my already comfortable right hand from the numpad over to the mouse and press the "Close" button with it. Shouldn't I just have to press "i" again to close the inventory?

You should! I don't know [yet] why it doesn't work for the inventory window, used to work in the past. Anyway, you can still use the Esc key to close windows.

About a third of the doors in this dungeon triggered a trap and I never figured out how to tell if a door activates one or not.

You need the 'Traps' skill for that. Detecting traps is not very smooth even if you have mastered the skill, though. Perhaps it's not that big problem, on the other hand. Traps in Untitled are not as dangerous as in other roguelikes. You should not die unless you are very low on HP. I'll rethink the problem.

For my third life I decided to go north to the tower on my map. After just running through 10 or so levels without any problems I entered a new level that made an error pop up on my screen. It said that it couldn't load some npc script or something, and upon pressing "Ok" it closed my game.

That's a very weird one as the script file it complains about actually exists in the data archive. I was unable to reproduce the failure so far, but I will surely not ignore it. The error looks quite easy to fix, as soon as I manage to reproduce it on my computer.

Quote
Other than that, I really recommend adding some sort of tutorial with a test level or something that shows how the game works for new players.

Tutorials are quite hard to implement and I always hated them as a player, so I decided not to have them in Untitled. Perhaps I'll change my mind at some point, but for now I'll rather stick to the idea of making user interface more friendly/intuitive, that should be enough...

It needs a name.  It really really needs a name.  "Untitled" is not a name, and you will never get anyone to play it whilst it's called that.

Well, maybe you are right. I'll reconsider that. But if I ever change the name, it shall be changed to something big, I will not just pick the first idea that comes into my mind, so it may take some time :).

Incubator / Fame Feedback Thread
« on: July 10, 2012, 07:35:36 PM »
Fame has been present on the Temple of the Roguelike for months, but I haven't received much feedback so far. And I desperately need it, because while I always know what to implement next, I'm not so sure I know what players want. I can see that for some reason incubator threads are much more effective way to collect feedback, so I've created this topic. All your opinions are welcome!

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Re: Untitled 0.7.8 Released
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:35:21 AM »
"Real" names are so boring. They usually follow one of several common patterns, especially commercial games. I regard "Untitled" as a kind of mock. Besides, changing the name after 12 years of development would be... weird? It's like changing the name of your 12 year old kid.

This time there are no new major gameplay-related features. The biggest changes are: the Quest Log and the "immersion" mode (full-screen).

Known bugs:

* Full screen doesn't work on Linux (but you can still maximize the window)

Detailed change log:

* "Immersion" mode (full screen)
* quest log
* added possibility of starting game without an arm or leg
* casting a spell takes 1 turn
* name of the location is displayed on the interface
* explosion of a fireball affects items on ground just like normal explosion
* Shift+Q exits to OS, Ctrl+Q exits to menu
* [bugfix] unique books and scrolls are no longer generated in random locations
* [bugfix] when quitting the game, the option 'N' works properly again
* [bugfix] there was no log message when using a staircase in the random dungeon
* [bugfix] corpses destroyed by explosion no longer result in a message saying that they rot away

Have a lot of fun and please send me some comments about the game!

Angband is just like Linux - thousands of variants, it's virtually impossible to choose the best one so I don't even try. That's why sometimes I hate open souce and free licenses.

Programming / Re: Debugging and other helpful things
« on: May 09, 2012, 07:05:30 PM »
I don't use logs. I think I have enough of them in my job :). When the game crashes, it's the best when debugger breaks the execution, so you can debug immediately. Logs are only useful when someone else is testing and they accidentally find a bug (but crash dumps are still better). However, when you need to debug the initialization stage, a log (or a console window) is very helpful.

Profilers are piceless when you suddenly discover that your game slows down and you cannot find the cause. It's amazing that the results from a profiler are almost always totally different than your first guess.

I don't often have a need to use a real debugger.  For me, I just carpet-bomb print statements around the problem to figure out what is going wrong.

That's exactly what I've been doing in the old times when I had no real IDE with working debugger and I'm really glad that those old times are gone. Not many things are more frustrating than having to modify your code to see what's wrong with it :).

Programming / Re: Ease of Implimentation...Major Consideration?
« on: April 23, 2012, 04:20:24 PM »
HeroRL - A traditional multi genre RL where each selectable level is styled according to a certain genre. So you can take your cowboy hero into a space station, your mage into a western tavern, etc... The issue? COMPLEXITY. Sure, it's a good idea for a game. But goddamn, just creating the system, even if stolen from GURPS or something, is just HARD.

There was a game where you were able to do crazy things like that... It was called Civilization. If Mr. Meier could do it in 1991, then you can do the same (only better) in 2012. Maybe it's not that complex. Or should I say: not much more complex than writing an usual roguelike ;).

If you are black in the US you are many times more likely to go to prison for the same crimes as a white person.

So blacks should commit no crimes at all and everyone would be happy. The problem is that they do commit crimes and just shouting around that blacks and whites are equal won't solve the problem.

Facts ? Coming from the guy who thinks Poland is one of the poorest countries in the world ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita )... You should read more before posting stuff like this.

Wikipedia doesn't note the fact how education deteriorated in the past 20 years in Poland or that they haven't built new railroad tracks since 80's, or that one official is able to ruin a prospering company just for fun, or that their government only cares about looking good in tables like the one you have linked against. So the racists may be actually right.
