Sure, maybe we should have them wear yellow stars, or, you know, put those guys in camps if they remain incorrigibly annoying to you.

It's amazing how people always start talking about Hitler when they run out of arguments.

Does anyone plan to play DiabloIII?

No. It was fun to play Diablo. It was fun to play Diablo II, when we were tired of Quake III. And now it will be fun to make fun of Diablo III :). If they don't surprise us with something totally different from the teasers that we've seen so far, it will be more like a disco with monsters. Blizzard surely knows how to make money, but they don't know how to make games any more.

Programming / Re: Java RL tutorial!
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:34:01 AM »
Java prevents you from needing to do as much work >_>.

Java only prevents you from having control over low-level operations, which may be a good thing if you are writing a coffeebreak game, or if you hate programming :).

This idea is stolen from Every Extend Extra:

No, it's stolen from Warcraft II (although the dwarves in Warcraft II didn't get resurrected :) ).

Maybe you should just give up the belief that save scumming is evil. I did :).

Temple of the Roguelike / Re: Announcement standard?
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:08:31 AM »
P.s That standard way of spelling standardised is definitely with an 's' not a 'z'  ;D

It's one of the standards that nobody respects, I guess. Americans invented the internet so they have the right to set standards here :D, although it's probably painful for language purists. I am a fanatic purist, but luckily English is not my primary language, so I happily ignore all the US/UK differences. Don't even look at texts in my game ;).

A lot of people forget to add a summary of their game. I find that helps a lot.

Good point. In case of new games it would be nice to know whether: it is a coffeebreak roguelike (I don't play these), contains manga-like tiles (I don't play these either), is written in Java or requires me to install anything (why would I even bother playing these?) ;).

Version: 001 (First release)

This gave me the idea that each release announcement, not only the first one, should contain the release number. Version numbers we all use are not standardized in any way, one developer may use 9.99.999 for the first release and another may use 0.00.1beta for an almost complete game. Version numbers mean nothing. However, a release number would be quite a good indicator of game's maturity level. What do you think?

We might want to decide how substantial a change must be to create a new thread instead of posting in the old one. It seems that most people who announce updates create new threads, which I find quite annoying, especially if there are two versions one right after other. Also this makes it harder to find all discussion related to the particular game.

Agree. Every game should only have one thread. It's extremely irritating to search for a particular post about particular game when there are dozens of threads about it. I hate the 'Announcements' forum for being such a mess and rarely visit it.

As of standards... I think that only one piece of information is really essential: a direct download link. People tend to forget about it and there's no force on Earth that could make me go through all kind of weird webpages and look for the damn link :).

Programming / Re: JVM vs something else
« on: February 17, 2012, 11:43:42 AM »
I don't know what kind of java programs you've run, but I've never had any problems.

You probably own newest hardware available on market. I don't, so I'm really sensitive to performance issues and I can really tell whether they are negligible or not ;).

I have never seen a single Java program that was running really smooth, no matter whether it was 3D or 2D. And it's not only the amount of memory used (C++ programs use a lot of memory as well), Java is just slow. However, if you don't have much C++ experience and you care about portability, Java is still a good choice.

Programming / Re: Bug tracking?
« on: February 10, 2012, 10:40:16 PM »
Bug tracking using a dedicated tool only makes sense when you have a team. If you work alone, it's just easier to open Notepad and write the bug down. Having to launch a browser, navigate to the BT webpage, log in and click through dozens of menus creates a tempting and dangerous idea of ignoring the bug... Which is, of course, not quite what we expect from bug tracking tools ;).

But in case you have a team... Mantis seems to be worth considering as it has the features you want. It's online, it's free and it hardly needs any setup. The application itself doesn't look impressive, but it's probably a matter of taste.

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Re: Mysterious Castle 1.9
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:41:02 PM »
From this board I went to www.MysteriousCastle.com and found a link to IndieDB. There I saw the "Mysterious Castle 1.8 for Windows (No Music)" link, so I followed it. It took me to some subpage with a huge "Download NOW!" button. Finally, that was what I wanted! Three levels of redirection. Not a big deal, but you could provide a direct download link. Making it easier to download you're making it more popular :).

I'm used to pressing Alt+Enter to go fullscreen (that's the way the Windows console works) or F11 (as in Firefox). These would be the best keys, I believe.

Moving is simple, indeed. I think that the first time I played, the game might have hanged and just stopped receiving any input :).

It's not easy to find the download link for Windows. The user interface is not very intuitive at first sight. Why do I have to press some buttons twice? It's ultra-annoying that I have to wait until the whole text message appears... Is there any button to speed it up? There should be different key for switching to full screen - maybe it's logical on OSX to press Esc, but on Windows Esc typically closes a window.

Positive comments will come when I figure out how to move my characters :D.
