Classic Roguelikes / Which of these 4 games has the best archer class?
« on: August 18, 2013, 02:32:59 PM »
Nethack is the worst one by far. Throwing daggers is way better.

Dungeon Crawl seems to be better if your a CeHu, with your speed and the ability to cast some spells.

Angband you have access to useful spells.

How's ADOM's archer classes?

First let me introduce you to this:

It would be awesome if we(if by we, I mean you) could pull of something like this. Using bots to try to beat the game, live with people watching and betting. Bonus points if we could rotate to various games.

Some forks have a special atheist ending where you give the gods the finger and take the amulet home with you.

This got me very interested. What forks are we talking about? Unnethack?

When you say "special endings," are you looking for games where the player's actions can influence the outcome of the game's narrative, or are you after games with challenging "postgame" content?

It's a little bit of a stretch, but in Ragnarok, the number of Aesir who survive the final battle depends on how successful you were in completing your quests.  Does that count?

I am just wondering what roguelikes have challenging "postgame" content. But that big of Ragnarok got me interested. Thanks!

The problem with Nethack is that the challenges are reducing the players options and power. I prefer something that throws additional trials for the player. Sure, the ADOM example is more about farming for certains but it still throws harder stuff than regular ending.

In DCSS we can do a 15-rune run
In ADOM we can do a Ultimate Chaos God ending

What other roguelikes have "endings" with additional challenges?

I've been playing as a Dwarf Paladin, but I get my Holy Symbol busted from fire damage. I cleared SMC/UD on my second attempt though, after submerging myself with spoilers. I found herbs but since I lacked herbalism I didn't payed much attention to them. Should I pick them even if I don't know Herbalism?

And it does have a great atmosphere. I'll be honest and say that the UCG ending is a large reason why I want to keep playing the game (yes, I've read the endgame text) even though it may take years.

All these talents, skills, spells. Equipment. Item destruction. Traps. Rivers. Two types of armor.

It's funny, because I read a post somewhere that said of the big 4, ADOM is the easiet to beat if you know what to do.

Can it be considered a whole new ball game from Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup?

Frozen Depths homepage is down :(

Anyone knows what happened?

The idea of a team vs team roguelike sounds so, so awesome! But the game is way too fast to be played in real time. I wouldn't mind kill a few hours ascending my team in the ladder.

As someone who very rarely plays roguelikes spoiler-free/advice-free I really, really enjoy this topic.

And I need to take some presentation lessons from you. It's a very pretty guide!

Well, it seems there might be some issues in using an european keyboard. At least that's what I think. The climb down command is _ instead of the classic >
