Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / YAFRLP Get Out!! Release 1
« on: December 03, 2008, 10:41:01 PM »
Well I finally made a roguelike game.

Get Out is a simple roguelike game where you need to escape 10 levels of a building. You('@') must first get the keycard ('!') then get to the stairs ('>') while avoiding the policeman ('&').
The game is played with the keypad with numlock off or the arrow keys. 'q' to quit.
Get Out was made by James E. Ward with some code taken from programs by Joseph Larson and Ido from Cymon's Games. It was made with Bloodshed's DevC++ development enviroment. Copyright 2008 James E. Ward

It can be found at:
http://code.google.com/p/getout/

I have been wanting to use YAFRLP as a post title for months.

Funny story, ido. Right after i posted that message i came across your link to this on cymons games and started a game using it. Pretty much all of the original code has been changed to fit my own classes and preprocessor definitions but it was the perfect start for me. Did you write this? I need to know so I can give proper credit.

Also some of the curses programs on cymons are well commented so i guess I should be able to make my game without an extreme amount of problems.

I posted a similar idea to this on rgrd not too long ago. My problem was that i wanted an escape roguelike that was different from zomband so i wanted ideas. My idea is alot simpler though and as soon as i learn pdcurses I will start making it. BTW does anybody have a link to a good pdcurses tutorial? I havent been able to find one.

1) Must run on an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5
2) Must be able to play without sound
3) Must be playable windowed
4) Be fairly "light," that is, mostly a hack 'n' slash, without too much brainwork

I think that crawl meets these requirements very well. Mabe angband if you like to spend a lot of time grinding.

Do mystery dungeon games count as roguelikes? I kinda think they are similar genres and not quite the same. (egs pokemon MD or azure dreams)

Programming / Good examples?
« on: October 07, 2008, 12:57:12 AM »
Does anybody here know of any rls written in c++ that have clearly commented code and aren't  extemely difficult for someone learning the language to understand? I've looled at a few sources and understand some but i would like a good example.
