A new update after 2 years, and comes bundled with a name change :)

You can get it on Steam here

The first thing you'll notice when you load the game is the new outstanding title art, made by Colombian artist Juan José Cano. It depicts the evil serpent Kramora, hovering on the world as a constant menace, and our adventurer approaching the entrance of the ruins of Ananias temple, the last resort to save the realm.

However, the biggest change is the introduction of the High Definition UI; while keeping the crisp pixel art appearance for the main map view, we introduced higher resolution for the UI elements so that everything looks now less cramped; this also included adding floating tooltips, so you can now examine the enemies and items on each room.

Another addition is a new set of attributes used to describe the characters; these attributes influence the base stats, and will see more development and we introduce new subsystems in the future, such as piety and prayers. All these stats can now be seen at a glance in the game's HUD, alongside with the skills (which also have tooltips now so you can see what they are)

Following are some additional changes:

* Avoid long gaps between music tracks that were causing long periods of uncomfortable silence.
* Change step sound. We were planning to have more audio tweaks but we fell short on time.
* Extend max inventory slots to 72, overall inventory has been expanded now, so you will be able to carry more things
* Some classes have been renamed, in anticipation of bigger narrative changes (Hunter to Sentinel, Arcane Master to Libratus, Monster Slayer to Inquisitor, Ailorus Monk to Seraphist, Barbarian to Thane, Dumeril Sage to Oracle)
* Display confirm and cancel target buttons hovering on the target.

I wanted this version to be ready for the Turn-Based Thursday Fest 2025, so some of the things I wanted to put in didn't make it. This included a Tutorial level to onboard players into the game more easily, and further improvements on the inventory UX with drag and drop and tooltips.

This new version (2.6.0) signals our return to developing a polishing the game; the plan is to keep the spirit of the game, but make it more enjoyable by improving the user experience, balancing the gameplay, and introducing some narrative elements. After all, it's been some years of experience that I want to put at the service of our beloved game.

As with all big changes, things may be a little bit broken, so I welcome any comments here or at our discord! :)

Also note that we are rolling out the name change slowly as with all Steam processes, so you'll still see the Ananias name around for a little bit.

Happy adventuring!

Temple of the Roguelike / Roguenet
« on: October 20, 2021, 01:05:54 AM »
One of the things I've wanted to do for a long time, but only got to start working on it about one year ago: A social space inspired by traditional roguelikes.

In there, you can chat with people using its own text-based conversation interface which supports both public spaces (every one you see will see what you write) and private spaces. There is no message log and there will never be. It's meant for you to engage in real-time.

In addition to this, I'm adding more areas for you to explore; there's currently a Museum of Roguelikes in construction, and in the future, I plan to allow people to build stuff.

Check it out at https://roguetemple.com/net/ , no install required, just a modern browser. Also note there's no support for mobile currently.

All your comments and suggestions are welcome!

The Roguebasin / Criteria for Featured Roguelikes
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:54:22 AM »
I was wondering if there's an existing criterion for the Featured Roguelike in roguebasin's front page, I believe we should have something in place to rotate the games.

Temple of the Roguelike / Support page updated with current projects
« on: January 15, 2018, 06:22:33 PM »
Your contribution helps me pay hosting fees and other operation costs, as well as continue making roguetemple grow. See below for details

http://roguetemple.com/support/

Current Infrastructure

- Private VPS at DigitalOcean for http://forums.roguetemple.com (120USD / Year)

- Blogging account at Wordpress.com for https://blog.roguetemple.com (48USD / Year)

- Shared Hosting at Bluehost.com for http://roguetemple.com (Blog and other content) (252USD / Year) [NOTE: Not used exclusively for roguetemple]

Current Project: Migration from BlueHost

I am moving away all roguetemple.com content from my personal bluehost account, this is to make mantaining the blog easier, increasing security on it and keeping cost controlled and separate.

The blog is now set up at wordpress.com, all data migrated and working. Pending: Finish redirects setup to avoid missing content.

Planned Projects

Revive the Roguemundi: Roguelike World Map. Back on 2008 we had a website where people could add themselves in and check if there were other roguelike enthusiasts in their home towns or any locations they were visiting. I'm planning to set it up again with a modern 2018 UI.

Other Announcements / Roguelike Expo as part of Roguelike Celebration 2018?
« on: November 20, 2017, 09:20:46 PM »
Hi all!

I started a discussion about this over twitter but I figured this would be a better place to discuss!

How about a having a "roguelike expo" as a sub-event on the roguelike celebration, where developers can display their games on booths / tables and players can go check them out, as an addition to the main talk schedule, while keeping the single track model for talks?

The idea for this is so that devs of new games can get feedback and promote their games, and existing games can show their new features.

Some options that have been considered:
  • Having it happen on a third day, may be half a day
  • Sacrificing the time for two or three talks for it, may be after lunch on Sunday

Would you as a player or as a developer be interested on it?

As part of plans to revive the blog, I have moved it into the hosted wordpress.com service.

This shouldn't have a lot of impact over the forums, but if you guys could check http://blog.roguetemple.com and check everything's good, I'd appreciate it :)

7DRLs / PokemonRL 7DRLC 2017 Success
« on: April 04, 2017, 03:28:40 PM »
Well, I forgot to post about it here!

You can check the full story here: https://blog.slashie.net/category/pokemonrl/ and play online here: http://slashie.net/pokemonrl/

Your goal is to become a Pokemon master by defeating the gym leaders of the 8 cities in your region. Map is randomly generated, deploy your pokemon using "R" and a direction to fight wild pokemon and gain XP (or to weaken and catch them!) your pokemon will evolve and learn new skills.

Pokemon data is heavily based on the Gen 1 official dataset which I've been gathering from around the net. This is an open source project: https://github.com/slashman/pokemonrl contributions are welcome and you are also welcome to use the data in your own game.
