QuickHack 1.2.1 (save files and master traits!)
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:06:02 PM »
QuickHack version 1.2.0 is now available at https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6oeeUZo0SLSTDhDMDZUbWR4eUU

The main features introduced are the ability to save, and master traits.

Saving works like in the old Zelda games; when you start, you pick which file you're playing on.  However, it's still permadeath; your file is erased when you load it.  You can suspend it, but not continue.

Each of the classes has its own master trait, which is available at level 15 and beyond.  Master traits make your special ability more powerful in some way . . .

As always, feedback is greatly appreciated, and thank you to everyone who has been supportive and helpful so far!

Sure sounds like a nice set of gains to me---good idea on the saving system.

Wow, that is some serious development. I didn't even have time to play the last version because you're rolling along so damn fast. Thumbs up from a loyal QuickHack fan here, us Java folks have to keep together. ;)

Thanks, guys.

Found a minor bug with loading a saved game, fixed it, version 1.2.1: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6oeeUZo0SLSVVYyMmNvaW1VZHM

Or you can always just go to http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/QuickHack for the latest version.

Hi,

great to see QuickHack improved :) I reviewed previous version on my website and said that the lack of saves is the biggest problem of the game, but I hope saving will be implemented soon. Glad to see I was right :) I'm looking forward to see what's next :)

This game is very fun. The simplicity, fast gameplay, and little animations help make this very addictive.

Still have a couple suggestions though.

It would be very nice is the font size for the main menus and help screen were a good bit bigger. They are pretty small. Especially when compared to the main game screen which is perfect size. The stats side of the screen font could be a teeny bit bigger too.

It would be nice if the inventory screen would tell you the effects of the items you currently have equipped. You can find out what the ones you select to put on do, but the ones you already have equipped have no way of telling as far as I can tell. It gets hard to remember what the effect of an equipped item is sometimes so it would be nice to be able to see it at the same time so you can compare it to the new ones you are considering equipping.

It would be nice if you could use the number pad to navigate the inventory as well.

I think the help screen should tell you what the stat bars mean. I know it mentions the blue one and health is kinda self explanatory, but took me a minute to figure out that the experience was the white one.

The score font could be larger too.

I have not found any chests. I found brown "="'s, but nothing happens when I use the "u" command. I have found "O"'s that break open when I bump into them, but do nothing when I press "u".

For some reason, I feel like a kind of hard mode where the player would not be allowed to use the wait command would be really fun and challenging. Just that. Nothing else really, but a mode where the wait command was disabled.

I also think this game would be jaw-some with some nice little arcade like sound fx.

I like the monster variety that pops up. Got taken out by the Minotaur on my last game.

Fullscreen would be nice if possible.

Great game. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your interest.  In response:

You can resize the window (including fullscreen); this scales the fonts.  However, some panels (such as inventory and high score panels) don't change fonts.  That's something I'll address in the next update.

The "0"s are chests.  I hadn't realized I forgot to set up "u"se to open them.  I'll address that next update.  Ditto with numpad scrolling on the menu.

When you highlight an item in inventory, the description below says what you have equipped.  But I've received enough feedback about it that this is clearly counter-intuitive for some people.  I'll look at other options.

More in depth help panels is also a good idea.

I can make the window stretch to fit the screen (this is how I've been playing) but not make it go fullscreen. If it is implemented, how do I make it fullscreen?

I figured the O was probably the chest. Just wasn't sure since it wasn't working as described.

The font scales fine in the main window where the action is. But the stat info on the side is still rather small. Especially the score.

I think it would be nice if the items that are currently equipped had theuir descriptions next to them on the side (to the right side I suppose) and have the not equipped item descriptions pop up where the currently equipped item description is.

A few more enemies would be nice. I think for the length of the game, that 12-15 would be a good number.

Have you considered a couple power-ups or different potion types? Maybe to help hi-light the arcade qualities a little more.
