But I learned English by playing roguelikes!
That doesn't sound like a good idea. His daughter will wind up thinking that every letter is out to kill her.

Imagine...your kid screams in the middle of the night.  "Daddy, daddy!!"  You run in to their room to see what's wrong.  "I had a nightmare where the 'o' was coming to get me."

After downloading the latest DoomRL, my son (just turned 11) seen me playing it.  He thought it was pretty cool and now it's on his computer.  He's also being playing Dwarf Fortress too, since I gave him my old PC.  This was about 6-8 months ago.  He has even given Stone Soup a few runs.

My 6 year old is having a blast with Spelunky.  I know it's not a true roguelike, but it's close enough for me.

Any one else?  I know my kids can't be the only ones.

There it is!  I bookmarked this a long time ago because I wanted to try it out.  And then I must have deleted the bookmark or something.  I could never remember the name of it.  I'll make sure I check this out sometime.  *bookmarks*

So what is this game actually like?

I don't read a whole lot of books, but I like the Shannara series.  They are authored by Terry Brooks.  There is also The Magic Kingdom of Landover series.  This is also by Terry Brooks.

I think I will look into the Ice and Fire books though.  Along with other suggestions that get posted here.

What's the level cap for Crawl?

I believe it is 27.  I read it somewhere, but I can't remember.  Maybe it was in the manual...

Spoiler Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm0CtcttgNg

I stumbled upon this browsing youtube.  It is an end game video, so I won't go into detail.  I just thought some here might find interest in it.

As for crawl, I am just getting into this game.  I have tried it before and it didn't have much appeal to me.  After the latest update; it is my flavor of the month.  Or, it could be longer than a month, I'm not sure.  I'm not sure what happened between then and now.  *shrugs*

I did the tutorial with the Mino Zerker and had an ok run with him.  And then like most of my other deaths in pretty much every roguelike I have ever played; I got cocky and something put me in my place.  :(  Well, somethings in this case.
I won't post the whole dump (them are pretty big), but here is the little overview.
Code: [Select]
14406 Karzack the Cleaver (level 11, -14/99 HPs)
Began as a Minotaur Berserker on Oct 11, 2009.
Was a High Priest of Trog.
Demolished by a komodo dragon (21 damage)
... on Level 6 of the Lair of Beasts.
The game lasted 02:11:12 (14191 turns).

I usually check in every day or so.  I just don't have much to say though.

I have yet to try this.  I think I should go do that.

Edit:  Whoa, I like this.  I never gave this game a shot until I seen the video.  I guess I shouldn't have passed over this for so long.

Definitely going to keep an eye out on this one.  I really like what they did with Depths of Peril and can't wait to see what they do with this one.  I have never tried Kivi's Underworld though.

Second link.  I'm not sure if this is it, but it looks like it.  Same developer as what was on the page you posted.
Edit:  Looks like the links are 404 too.  Sorry.  :(

Edit2:  http://www.programfiles.com/Default.asp?LinkId=11031 (requires sign up, so I don't know if it works)

Edit3:  I googled the term below and got about 2 pages of results.  I don't know how many are dead links though.

Hero is a "16 color dungeon" adventure game

As a player, I would like to see this site become a hub for all(most all) roguelike players.  I actually visit this site most every day or few days to see what the latest posts are.  No matter what they are.

As for suggestions, I'm not sure.  It's midnight right now and I finding it even hard to type correctly.  Maybe create boards here for each major roguelike and try to drive player traffic to them boards.  This won't work in all cases (angband, dwarf fortress), but maybe some others.  Maybe I'll scout the net and see what I can come up with.

I don't know how many people play roguelikes but it seems that we are few and far between.  A strong community would keep these games going for years to come.  I don't think I should worry to much, but it feels as if this genre is dying out.

I have little to no coding experience, but is it possible to write something using one of the Elder Scrolls engines?  Something like this sound pretty hard if not impossible to do though.

I discovered this a day or so ago.  I was going to post this here too, but I guess I was beat to it.    :)

Very addicting game.  I would like to see more games, with a rogue-like influence, like this.
