Do you know pixeljam.com games?

I love them! I had lots of fun with Dino Run, Mountain Maniac and Gamma Bros.. and those guys are very good pixel artists.

Off-topic (Locked) / Darkest videogames ever
« on: November 19, 2011, 07:10:42 PM »
Let's make a thread about the darkest games we ever played.

I'll start with I have no mouth and I must scream.. if you don't know it please watch the intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw-88h-LcTk

Another very nice one is the first Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen (top-down view). The initial crypt amazed me the first time I played.. immersive music, the sound of thunders and prisoners crying, Kain diabolic laugh when he swings the sword (or even better his "VAE VICTIS!"), drinking blood from chained girls.. and then lots of rain, dark forests, etc. Fantastic.
Here's my favourite cinematic:

What are in your opinion roguelikes' biggest turn-offs?

I think such a thread could be useful for developers to know what things could keep away potential players from giving a try to their games.

Let's rate them from 1 to 3.
1- Just a little annoying
2- Big turn-off; unless there are other potentially interesting aspects to balance this factor, I'll not try it
3- I'm very likely not playing a game because of this

First things that come to my mind:

- no screenshots on the website (2)
I like to try new games but I need at least a glimpse on what I'm downloading.

- development still at the very beginning (3)
I'm not saying that I don't play alpha relases, but unless the game architecture is *very* innovative, there should be at least some complexity and features, otherwise I don't want to immerge myself in something like that hoping that the work will go on.

- libraries to install (2)
I really don't like to install all those libraries, .net stuff, compilers and so on to play a roguelike.. but sometimes the game is worth the effort

- java (2)
I think no explanation is needed here haha.

- bad controls (1)
Unintuitive key configuration, ankward controls and maybe no txt controls file (so I can print it) can be a real pain.

Off-topic (Locked) / Might & Magic X project

Some Might & Magic IX fans are willing to make by themselves the last chapter of the awesome Might & Magic saga.. if you want to help them here are their threads:
http://telp.org/mm9/tavern/anyboard/posts/41400.html
http://www.thegaminguniverse.org/forum/index.php?topic=40648.0

(edit: and here another MMX project I just found:
http://www.celestialheavens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9117&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
maybe it should be better if they joined their efforts)

I really loved M&M games, and even if IX was somewhat disappointing (no flying, shallowest NPCs ever, not much crafting, etc) I have to say that I still really liked it.

Any M&M appreciators here at RogueTemple?

I just watched again that masterpiece cartoon movie and noticed the main character name is Larn. So my question!

BTW: those fantasy cartoons back in the 80's were really awesome.
Naked beautiful chicks, cool heros/villains, a lot of different situations.. never seen things like that in the last 20 years.

My favourite one is Heavy Metal. Fire and Ice is #2, and then there is Starchaser: legend of Orin. Neat stuff.

Wouldn't it be awesome to give 100.000 € each to Thomas Biskup, Kornel Kisielewicz, DCSS devs, Lost Labyrinth devs and so on so that they can focus more on developing?
If I manage to make a lot of money I'm sure I'll do something like that.

Very interesting video by National Inflation Association.

Things are like that also in Italy, what about your countries?

Off-topic (Locked) / The goal in your life.
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:32:28 AM »
What's your life goal?

Mine is to get enough surplus money (15.000-25.000 euros) so I can afford to pay a programmer to develop the (free) action-roguelike I planned on paper (since almost a decade).
Currently I am not in a good situation because even if I have a degree I live in a country which has been hit hard by recession and things don't look good, but at the same time I really like investing in stock market, commodities, etc and until now I'm performing good so who knows :-)

I also would love to go live in a house in front of the sea, but let's this be goal #2 because it's way expensive here (at least 10 times than goal #1!).

Goal #3 is to travel in south-east Asia (I'm always been fascinated by those countries: Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, etc).

Tell me about you!

Very nice little game.

.. and: is this true?
If so, I don't get this.

When I drive my car and there is sunset I always try like an idiot to totally block the sun to access my sight, I move all around like I have Tourette's syndrome, shit.

Not a roguelike, but a nice turn based strategy game. Are there any players here?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO:_Alien_Invasion
UFO: Alien Invasion is an open source strategy video game in which the player fights aliens that are trying to take control of the Earth. The game is heavily influenced by the X-COM series (mostly by UFO: Enemy Unknown). It is based on a modified id Tech 2 engine, and runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, AmigaOS 4, and Mac OS X for both PPC and Intel Macs.
UFO:AI has been nominated for "Best project for Gamers" in the Sourceforge 2007 and 2008 Community Choice Awards and was positively noted by Linux Journal.

Do someone plays this sci-fi roguelike?

I would like to try it but I keep receiving this error, no matter how I change the resolution:
