The Roguebasin / Weird happenings on Roguebasin?
« on: October 22, 2020, 08:25:19 PM »
So, it might just be me but it seems very odd that there are dozens of new user accounts being opened on Roguebasin every day that don't actually do anything. Generally you only need to open an account if you want to edit a page or ask a question in a talk page or something, but all these accounts are doing nothing but spamming up the recent changes special page.

Is it always like that in wikis for some reason, or is it suspect?

Small usability note:
When you are immobilized, and hostile creatures are in sight, there is no easy way to waste time. Trying to move doesn't take a turn, so I resorted to dropping an item, picking it up, dropping it again, etc.

Odd message:
When you use 'a'pply to disable a trap you get the message "You are standing too far away to apply that" and it doesn't tell you whether you succeed in disabling the trap or not. At least I assume 'a'pply is supposed to be able to disable traps? Because it disables traps. :P

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn-based) / Re: Anyone playing Wayward?

I played Wayward a lot, got kinda onto other games since. It can be frustrating, but I think that counts for pretty much all roguelikes. :P

Programming / Re: Supporting Multiple Platforms

I think a lot of developers decide they would rather have a 70% user base on a project they can cope with than a 100% user base of a project that drives them nuts.

Roguelikes tend to attract dabblers (like me), who may have limited computer language skills, limited knowledge of non-Windows systems and could be looking for any short-cuts they can find.  I mostly played around with existing code-bases (of *band games) and when I wanted to make changes that pushed the limits of what's do-able (like multi-language support) I quickly found that there were handy functions, libraries and development suites that were available for Windows but often not for Linux.  It was a pain even getting a Linux system set up alongside Windows on my (only) computer - never mind working out how to compile stuff.  And I don't have access to a Mac.

I'm unsure how this will end.

Rocks fall, everybody dies.  :P

It seems that the IRLDB does not support 2010.  I know what it feels like, it doesn't really feel like 2010 to me either. ;-)

Yeah, so if you do a IRLDB search with one of the "yyyy/mm/dd" date display options used then dates in 2010 will be displayed as 1000/00/00 (I presume that means 'no date' or 'invalid date').

See Lost Labryinth for example.

On a related note I'm considering altering the templates used in Roguebasin so that the Released and Updated lines are formed from _two_ fields each - date + (version).  That should make display more consistent and hopefully make it easier for things like IRLDB to have useful output.

Comments on a postcard ... er, post, ... please. :-)

I'm not an admin, but I'm sure Slash will be around soon. Which account was yours? We my have an impostor in our midst.

The account PaulBlay

Wait... what? You have 75 posts with that account. I'm confused.

It's RogueBasin that I've lost the account on, not Temple of the Roguelike.

I was quite active in both communities, until I fell out of contact (mostly due to ongoing health issues).

Long story short, I asked for password reset from RogueBasin, but no email arrived.  Now I can't even keep guessing passwords, because it's (presumably) been changed.  If there's a RogueBasin admin passing by here, could you send me a PM?

I agree Paul should be apointed as a sysop.

I haven't followed up on this before, because it hasn't been urgent (and I've been busy elsewhere).  However there's currently a very persistent spammer and I could really do with being able to delete user accounts / block IPs.

So, "Moar sysops plz".

Programming / Re: Grinding
« on: July 04, 2009, 10:43:11 AM »
What are your thoughts on level and item grinding in roguelikes?

Making monsters worth less (or no) EXP when they are weak in comparison to the player character is a well used system and one I have no great argument with.  You get a similar result by using somewhat exponential growth in EXP needed for a new level and keeping monster EXP unchanged. (If it takes 20,000 EXP to go from level 29 to level 30 but only 1,000 to go from level 1 to level 2 nobody is going to grind rats in the tutorial dungeon that long ;-).

I would advise against going too hard down against grinding though.  Different people have different likes with games and personally I tend to dislike games with actual or implied time limits and prefer to wander aimlessly while messing around.  I often give up on games that force me to go faster than I like.

In the case of Angband it's worth noting that although people can take it slowly turn count is very important in competitive contexts.  Also diving deep for high-level items is a common tactic so the current system is certainly not discouraging people from facing dangerous dungeon levels.

First, PaulBlay should definitely also receive admin. Slashie goes without saying :D Slashie should of course have admin, but PaulBlay does an enormous amount of editing and work on Roguebasin, and with admin he'd surely help out even more. So I'd definitely nominate him.

I'm grateful for your vote of confidence.  I should note that I don't have any *nix or MySQL experience (although I am familiar with some other database systems).  If the others still feel I am a suitable candidate I promise to do my best.

I have sent my contact info to Björn, and I have also set up the "Roguebasin Mantainance" project at slashie.net's mantis repository. All bugs and things to fix or enhance would be handled there (http://slashie.net/mantis/) so feel free to go there and report :)

Cheers.  I have reported the issues mentioned earlier in this thread.

You can best reach me at bjorn.ritzl@<that email service google has>.com

Does the paypal donate button still work?  That seems to be on an older email.

It should be possible to get access to a shell using the subdomain credentials. I'll investigate more. In the meantime I'm willing to help out with more or less anything. I'm on prental leave now and have a reasonable amount of time to spend to help you guys out.
Well it's great to hear from you.  I hope you don't feel I was out of line with my concerns. I did email the email address given with the paypal donate button, but possibly you don't check that anymore (as it's under your old name).

There are some minor annoyances that you might be able to help with, but if a couple or so RogueBasin members were given the access needed to fix it themselves that might be better?

Slash, Duerig, Scautura or one of the other more technically minded people would probably be able to give a better idea but here is a quick breakdown of them.

- Two pages cannot be displayed, and cause searches to fail when they are included in the result.  Search on 'Malthener' or 'Bergstrom' to see this.

- Non Ascii characters turn into gibberish (See here for an example).  Possibly this would require a MediaWiki version update?

- Just in the last few days spam has been getting a bit annoying.  On a related note the number of pages in the Delete category has been building up.
