About eight months ago I started a little video series about playing through DoomRL "special" levels (ie, the guaranteed ones). After that I started recording entire runs of the game, at which point my scope snowballed into roguelikes in general. I invite any and all members of the roguelike community to check out my channel and let me know how I'm doing:

If there are any other relevant links besides the game's "main" page (e.g., game's forum, a topic on here, its RogueBasin page, news articles), just tell me what makes sense and I'll be more than happy to include them here as well. Otherwise, if you have any ideas for games I should play (or repeat, if you want me to take another swing at something I've already done) then reply here, or on my channel, or in any of my videos, or PM me, or email me (theuberhunter@gmail.com) and I will do my best to get to it.
-
I HIGHLY recommend this ongoing series of videos, and have heaped harassment upon him in the form of many game suggestions to take a crack at these past months. 8)
Also, of course, Welcome to Temple of the Roguelike!
-
The full list of roguelikes I've already played can be found at the side on the Featured Tab. I don't know if there's a limit to that sidebar, though, so I'll also keep that list here (MOVED TO ORIGINAL POST).
I'm also open to the possibility of livestreaming for a game, but I don't know where to start. If anyone has ideas on good streaming sites, what to play, how to play it, etc, reply and we'll try to work something out.

Very entertaining stuff :)

Doesn't sound like Nixon to me.

Is it just me or does he sound like a dick?
Well, you sound like one here, Krice. The videos seem very nice!
As for my games, Hydra Slayer already has some videos (but maybe the graphical version could be tried), Hyperbolic Rogue already has some and is planned to have a new version, so no use to show it for now, and Vapors of Insanity has none and probably would benefit, but probably it's better to wait for a new version, as the current one has some bugs and its interface improvements are incomplete.
-
Well, you sound like one here, Krice.
I'm bit of a dick myself. Well, maybe it's just that he is american (I guess?). They often sound like arrogant dicks.

Hey now!
-
Krice. Consistently walking the thin line between blunt and bitch.
To be honest most Eastern Europeans come off as dicks to me. I'm not the only one that feels that way. I have to remind myself that they aren't really dicks. It's just a cultural thing that I'm responding to on a reflex level.
Krice you are Finnish right? To the ears of people in my part of the world (Eastern Oregon, USA) Finns and the rest of the Scandinavians come off as incredibly warm and nice. Though I'm sure they have just as high an instance of being assholes as any other place in the world.
EDIT: Yeah. He's an American or at least speaks with the standard American urban West Coast accent. Not to say that's where he's from. But that accent has become the standard in the US. Like it's the one you'll hear on news shows and what not from LA to New York. Any other accent will have you labeled as some sort of ethnicity and people will quiz you about it. I get it all the time as I have a rural accent. People think I sound unintelligent and right wing but capable and trustworthy. It's been a real issue in my legal career. I end up having to use ridiculously large words in order to viewed as intelligent. Like a gospel preacher using words like loquacious and what not. Maybe you'll hear me someday on Roguelike Radio.
-
GameHunter is just a cool dude, probing the depths of Roguelikes while also contributing mightily to the latest and greatest over on Chaosforge and DoomRL as one of Kornel's coding posse.
-
I've been told my inflection is pretty mute. I come from Midwest suburbia (so yeah, United States) and the only time I've been corrected regarding pronunciation is the difference between words like "marry" and "merry". TBH I wouldn't be surprised if my accent comes across as a little headstrong: I try to speak with some degree of confidence and matter-of-factness, but only because I'd otherwise be mumbling the whole time (far earlier videos are evidence of this).
Started up CastlevaniaRL: Serenade of Chaos today. Right now I don't really have time to double up on playthroughs, but if anyone has suggestions for quickies that would only take a video or two to explore sufficiently, those are far more likely to be recorded. Got a huge backlog already.
Also, if you guys have any advice on, say, introducing the games, or talking about their mechanics, or developer quips, I'd like to try mixing in as much of that as possible. Most of the talking I do involves either direct words on the screen or explaining what I'm doing as I do it, but I bet a more interesting approach is to compare and contrast from other roguelikes, or give my opinions on how certain things are handled. If it's a good thing then lemme know!
-
the only funny things I noticed is that you say "strenth" instead of as I would "straingth".
You also say catacooms instead of catacombs
-
I rather Enjoy Game Hunter's Lets Play's. I can hardly stand listening to most. Lots of other people tend to be over-dramatic when reading in game text or making their comments. Others that I've seen tend to just complain about the game they're playing and swear way too much.
I find Game Hunter's Lets Play's genuinely interesting and enjoyable.
Also, he sounds like a regular average guy without being too over the top or coming off as overly "nerdy" as some might assume the majority of the community to be.
-

Swedes are warm, but not finns or norwegians. Sweden is an interesting country also, because it almost never experienced any difficult wars (like world wars) so it was a peaceful land, something like elves always have in fantasy. We have had more difficulties in history, because we were slaves first to kingdom of Sweden and then the russian empire. Finland was extremely poor and people here fought against their masters and also the harsh, cold environment. You don't survive from that if you are nice. That's why we have lots of tough motherfucking asshole genes.

Movin' on to Hack, Slash, Loot. (http://youtu.be/gVRZKXgkvCw) As far as roguelikes go it feels very straightforward -- definitely in the category of a dungeon diver with its gimmick resting primarily in the interface -- so I might not spend too much time playing it, but the full version might surprise me with its 32 classes. I'm also pretty sure that the quest I'm on currently isn't indicative of typical gameplay (that is, almost entirely walking around and opening chests) so I think it'll have more than enough replayability. (Hope you guys don't mind if I post-update this thread for each new game: just trying to pique interest whenever I start something up.)
Also, I really don't mind playtesting a prototype/alpha game and recording the results. If some devs are sensitive about what they want visible to the public, I am more than willing to accomodate by unlisting or even privitizing it for selective viewing only. (Just make sure you let me know.)
-
Good stuff and makes sense to update here to keep a running tally of things. I know the HSL full version just updated recently, though quietly as it only seems to be localized within my inbox as a purchaser, within the last several days so I presume the demo version also did so.
I keep trying to get the dev to get on Roguebasin and more visible as it goes, but there was apparently some ugliness a ways back with some folks assailing it with baffling venom as "not a Roguelike!1, you monster" that put him fairly gunshy :-\
-
DoomRL 0.9.9.6 is almost out and I was allowed to make a teaser recording, so here it is (http://youtu.be/sAFpMN9kuog). There will probably been a thread in the Announcements forum soon, too.
-
What would be cool is if someone could do a lets play on every 7drl released this year.
-
What would be cool is if someone could do a lets play on every 7drl released this year.
That's actually part of the plan, once the 7DRL period ends. I'll probably spend one, maybe two videos' worth per successful entry. They'll be, with any luck, in addition to my normal LP schedule, so you'll have lots to watch during that time.
Speaking of which, planning on recording a little Random Realms today, we'll see how that goes with the new patch.
-
All right then! I've begun my blind-running of 7DRLs, starting with Infiniverse. I am going to attempt to play every single one insofar as they can be played on a Win7 computer in some form. You can find an introduction to this series here (http://youtu.be/Qwr9cNaI-YU).
As mentioned, if you know some games that would be currently impossible to get running on Win OS, even with proper emulation, I'd be more than grateful if there are people out there that can scrounge up a copy that would work properly. Off the top of my hand, I know there's a Mac game called DuneRL, a few open-sourced games constructed in Unix that don't have Win-compatible makefiles, and at least one game (whose name eludes me at the moment) that was designed for Android phones.
(I will be playing Tales of Maj'eyal concurrently for the time being, I just didn't have time to record it last night. First one's up, though! (http://youtu.be/a3l2Sbli0Ds))
-
Fantastic! I also hope to see the "almost 7DRLs", of which there seem to be a fair number of also aiming to get releases out by the end of this week or the next couple as it happens. Besides, given the number of successful ones, you'll still be plowing through these for a number of weeks in terms of those on time for the finish line.
Shoot, even for the "finished" ones it would appear many are, gladly, aiming to keep improving them in the near to general future as opposed to release drops---gogo full-bodied projects beget from breakneck chaotic speed! :P
-
Started up IVAN today. I've been told it's a pretty hard game. Maybe I'll survive long enough to make the LP meaningful!
My 7DRL 2012 playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL73DF5666962FD2AE&feature=view_all) is still updating (basically every day, sometimes not weekends). Keep checking for more games over the course of this month and probably the next as well! (Note that, if you made a game and would like me to play it ASAP, just let me know in some form.)
-
And now we go into ZAPM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlBWHQxlm-c). It's a good refreshing feeling to move out of the settings we've seen so far and move into something a lot...different, I guess! All of the same concepts are there, but simply putting a new label can really help revive that roguelike spirit.
I believe I'm a little over halfway done with the 7DRL 2012 games, excluding failed attempts (although I do plan on trying those, or at least the ones that can be played). Still chugging along!
As always, if you have anything you want to say about my videos (praise, anti-praise, criticisms, suggestions), my ears are always listening.

Zap'M is one of my all time favorite games. I won it several times and actually am developing a variant. Thanks for recording this video. My comments noted down while I was watching the thing.
Nice music! Yes, I see the vertical line stuck on screen.
I was scared you would die a YASD by kicking the door. You actually went down to a single hit point! Wonder how long would take you to figure out how to shoot the pea shooter. I laughed when you noticed your HP was down. Nice job figuring why.
Vat of sludge being food? Hilarious! Zap'M has no hunger at all.
Instead of kicking doors you can shoot its lock off with the pea shooter. Costs no hit points. Stand close as if you were going to kick it because it is assumed from afar you are not aiming for the lock. I also like how you are kicking from a diagonal direction. A habit from Adom? Hmmm ... maybe Zap'M fork should have door trap that damages people standing diagonally but not orthogonally. :-)
I too was baffled at Zap'Ms unfriendliness as to what everything does. Some of this is actually fixed in the variant. Picking an item from inventory like you did actually gives information.
When applying skills you can allocate more than one point to single skill at a time. The trick is to press enter before exhausting all your advancement points. This is addressed in the fork too.
Oh, you missed a door at Space Base 4. Kinda fun discovering you had "Chi" power.
Additional comments: Yes, pea shooter is a handgun. There are going to be lotsa guaranteed shops soon. I would be very grateful if you survived until that moment, so here goes a suggestion. Do not drink unidentified canisters. Zap'M has equivalent of potion of death! That is a really silly way to go. By the way, you can try price ID. It will give you some clues as to how expensive a thing is and at the same time how good/bad things it could do. Expensive things are either very good or very bad. No further hints though. I'd hate to spoil Zap'M for you. You decide what to identify with your floppy disk program.
Waiting patiently for the second part.

Some have mentioned PRIME to me, and I plan on doing it at some point as well. So many roguelikes, so little time...
I also like how you are kicking from a diagonal direction. A habit from Adom?
I didn't notice this until you mentioned it, but yeah, that would definitely be from ADOM's boulder traps. Granted no other game has a specific penalty for diagonal kicks, so sticking into PRIME would be amusing to say the leaset.
By the way, you can try price ID. It will give you some clues as to how expensive a thing is and at the same time how good/bad things it could do. Expensive things are either very good or very bad.
This is something I learned from NetHack, and if I had felt I had time to do so, I'd probably figure out the rough pricing for everything. But I already spent the better part of an entire video (it'll be P3) in Robot Town and here from on I'll probably start and stop the recording as necessary when it comes to shopping. I'll probably at least figure out the cost for ID floppys, if only because they're so dang important.
Waiting patiently for the second part.
Just a heads-up if you don't know, I try to record videos every weekday. I already have enough videos to get through the weekend, so that's a bonus for once.
-
PRIME is planned to have a release early in May so it would be good to wait at least until then.
After watching second part I have to say your playing style makes quite an impression. Again I learned a few things about what might be confusing from player's side.
By the way it was the gamma ray gun that took care of your software engineer. It is constantly radiating you when carried. I used to test ray guns early and usually discarded gamma ray gun after sorting it out or quickly used up if I needed empty ray guns.
Fighting with your hands is unarmed combat, not basic melee weapons. I think bare hands means "naked" hands.
-
Just watched P3. Nice job escaping that alien nest!
Your strength was lowered by poison damage you took earlier. Zap that blue ray gun at something. If it is gamma ray gun you are going to die of radiation sickness soon.
If I were you I would use that pea shooter to get rid of those alien eggs before they hatch lest you get caught by facehuggers sneaking up on you due to your slowness.
-
Third post in a row. Hope this is not a major blunder.
After watching ninth part I wish to express my gratitude again. PRIME has just received a modification which shows prices of items in shop without requiring player to pick them up exactly as you suggested. There are several more improvements you mused about. I heard you wish to collect knowledge about the game so In return let me present you with some facts about ZapM. One commenter said spoilers for ZapM are not widely available. This is true. Knowing the code in and out I am pretty much spoiler library on two legs so do not hesitate to ask questions.
I'll try to brief you with some facts but still leaving out the most fun-destroying spoilers. Mild spoilage is okay I think since you've experienced most of the game yourself.
Important gameplay bugs:
- Geiger counter in ZapM is not reliable. It works so-so for single counter but trying to use two or more is bound to produce artifacts. You've seen one of them.
- Bat'leth is classified as melee weapon, not a sword. :-(
What items do:
- Roll of duct tape is a consumable repair item. What you can repair: disabled <robot_name_here>, malfunctioning (red) doors, damaged pet robots.
- Restraining bolt is applied at robots to "tame" them. Basically it is additional circuit which forces obedience to you.
- Mega computer works exactly like mini computer except for one situation. You cannot execute floppy disk programs while you are blind with mini computer. Try it some time to see why. Your weak programmers should carry only mini computer to avoid becoming burdened. Mega version is good for selling.
- Canister of mutagen is radiating you like gamma ray gun. You had green jumpsuit which was radiation suit so in result it did not hurt your health. Ordinarily it would.
- Nano cola gives you temporary boost to charisma. This is its only purpose. Psions use it to spam Mental Blast several times in a row. In short Charisma emulates mana in ZapM. Nano cola is mana potion that can overcharge your mana pool.
- Empty ray gun should be 'a'pplied. It asks you to pick a canister for filling it up. All the bad canisters to drink are fine as fuel.
- Heap of space junk is absolutely useless. In PRIME it is the best food for matter compiler but ZapM has no real function for it.
What mutant powers do:
- Telepathy mutant power shows creatures with minds. This means you won't see grid bugs or dogbots show up but bore worms, redshirts and the like will be marked as such.
- Haste just increases you speed at the cost of 2 charisma points. There is no reason at all to turn it off ever. It has no other costs or disadvantages.
Questions you asked in videos:
- There is a way to prevent an automatic door from opening. Zap it with gauss ray gun which destroys its electronics.
- Pulse rifle needs to be 'a'pplied to have its firing mode changed.
- Toxic taste means you have been irradiated. Usually single such event is not enough to trigger radiation sickness.
- Non-optimized floppy disk of debugging checks for bugs your armor, implants and wielded item. To debug something wield it first and then run the disk. If you wield a non-weapon it is not going to weld itself to your hand. Grenades also do not glue themselves.
- Gauss ray gun is good for damaging robots. It also has effects on certain item class thus making zapping yourself less than recommended action.
Buggy/debugged/optimized:
- If you ever get your hands on digestion power abuse it. Digestion allows you to eat almost any item so experiment freely with wielding weapons and if something refuses to get off just eat it.
- Buggy floppy disks are rarely bad. Only unfun buggy floppies are enhance XXX because those decrease plus of XXX and bug it. On the other hand identify, debugging, mapping, detection, diagnostics and all others simply do their job. With the execption of ...
- ... buggy transportation which is dangerous. It has a little chance of causing instadeath. It tries for random coordinates five times and if it is always wall or occupied you die in transportation accident. Stupid thing, we did away with it in PRIME 1.9.
- Enhance XXX floppy can remove bugginess too. Docbot can't.
- Most canisters ignore bugginess. Buggy ones work exactly like optimized versions. Exceptions are: gain ability (buggy: -1 to random ability, debugged +1, optimized +1 to all), speed (affects duration), jarred brain (no int bonus if buggy).
Mutant Powers:
- Skill in mutant powers only increases chance to successfully use it. Nothing more.
- Concentration skill does not increase chances of using power. It decreases chances of automatically turning off persistent powers when you get stunned or confused.
- Every character level increases use chances for all powers.
Weapon damage:
- Plus on weapon adds one to its damage output. +0 pea shooter: 1-4. +3 pea shooter: 4-7. Enhanced pea shooter is great. If you start with enhance weapon floppy it is good to use it right away.
- Optimized weapon gets +2 to hit. This is like you would pump another two skill points in its skill category. Each level of corrosion or burns modifies to hit by -2.
- Each energy weapon uses some cells per shot. Phaser, blaster, laser pistol use five. Laser rifle uses eight. Laser cannon uses thirty five. Guardbot has the laser cannon but it may also be generated randomly.
- Categories: (ok, this may sound obvious but please bear with me)
In parentheses is raw damage. xNUM means NUM shots fired and bullets used per firing round.
-- handguns: pea shooter (1-4), blaster (1-8), phaser (1-8 + 2-12 blinding), laser pistol (1-8 + 2-12 blinding), pistol (1-8), assault pistol (2x 1-8)
-- light guns: sniper rifle (1-10), shotgun (4-24), laser rifle (1-12 + 3-18 blinding)
-- heavy guns: pulse rifle (3x 1-8), chaingun (6x 1-10), laser cannon (4-48), railgun (3-30)
-- sword: katana ("antique sword") (1-10), light saber (2-12 + 1-6 fire)
-- basic melee weapons: anal probe (0 damage), mop (1-8), club (1-6), cattle prod (1-4 + 1-6 stunning), dagger (1-4), nunchucks (2-8), bat'leth (2-12), chainsaw (2-12)
-- thrown weapons: football (1-6), rad grenade (4-32 radiating), stun grenade (3-18 stunning), concussion grenade (3-18), frag grenade (4-24)
- unarmed: punch (1-6)
- A railgun shot takes 150% time it would take to fire any other gun.
- Melee attacks receive damage modifier: (Str - 10) / 2. Str 14 means +2 to damage, Str 8 -1 to damage.
Random tips:
- Do everything to avoid becoming burdened. Adom penalises you with -5 speed which is 5% slower actions. In ZapM being burdened means -50% to speed. Ten times more.
- Do not worry about buckazoids that much. Later levels have plenty of them. Constant trips to Robot Town erode your attention.
- Flashlight uses so little energy I usually walk with it constantly on. Especially if I have a power plant which regenerates energy way faster than flashlight burns it.
- If you see a monster shooting you with a weapon several times without it misfiring it means his weapon is not buggy. You can use it without fear.
- If you have disintegration ray gun consider robbing a shop. Keep in mind the ray gun annihilates things -- the clerkbot was gone with all its money so good course of action is to attack the shopkeeper that you have not bought from. Ideally one you sold lots of stuff to so you can carry the loot next door as you did.
- Experiment with items more frequently.
- You can drop canisters into a vat to trigger pouring them into it. Make sure you are pouring a single canister as opposed to whole stack so you can benefit from the clue.
PRIME invalidates half of those already but for the most part information is made available inside the game. So when you eventually come to see what the fork has to offer prepare to be surprised a little.
-
After watching ninth part I wish to express my gratitude again. PRIME has just received a modification which shows prices of items in shop without requiring player to pick them up exactly as you suggested. There are several more improvements you mused about.
Glad to be of assistance! Part of the purpose of this kind of LPing is to offer "advice" through my complaints and nitpicks. Were it not blind-running, I may already be used to some of the game's apparent or imagined deficiencies and not express my distaste for them (which is often why developers overlook ease-of-use implementation more than other aspects). It's not always something that requires changing, but it's usually food for thought either way.
I heard you wish to collect knowledge about the game so In return let me present you with some facts about ZapM. One commenter said spoilers for ZapM are not widely available. This is true. Knowing the code in and out I am pretty much spoiler library on two legs so do not hesitate to ask questions.
I gotta say, I was surprised not to find any sort of wiki or guide (besides the developer's) for even simple stuff like stats and descriptions. More than anything I tend to use the wikis for items that I have no idea what's going on, or maybe some weird nuances that are sort-of understood but would require a rather large amount of effort to figure out.
And while I would like to go about collecting that information, who knows if I'll have to time! Gotta move onto other roguelikes, after all. I'll certainly hit up PRIME at some point, since it basically sounds like ZAPM+.

This is especially the kind of important stuff that should quite honestly be available in-game already. (Sounds like PRIME has in-game descriptions, so I hope it has these as well!) Otherwise the player's just firing guns and noticing that some hurt more than others, but not enough to know if it'll kill something with some amount of health (ala tricorder). I don't mind figuring out some things, but when there's no way to discern something other than blindly collecting raw data, that's when I draw the line.
Seems kind of silly that so many things can have BDO status but not actually matter. I suppose this is to obfuscate what DOES matter, but I'd say if something cannot be affected either way, it probably shouldn't be bothered to have a status.
In any case, thank you very much for the feedback!

Now let's try Rings of Valor (http://youtu.be/Vz8u77mz-Mw)! Probably won't be a real long LP but we'll see how far it goes. (I'll probably end up editing this post for new games unless there are replies.)
And yes, the 7DRL 2012 playlist is still being added to (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL73DF5666962FD2AE). Got 44 games in there now, still a ways to go! Don't forget to check out 7DRL 2012 game talk (http://roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=2273.0) for general discussion.
-
It's time to play some POWDER (http://youtu.be/7dc86gSMa6s)! The interface is a tad clunky for a standard PC but it's really not bad at all. More importantly, I can slap this game on my DS for out-of-town dealios.
Also of note is that I engaged in some ChessRogue (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7D38FF1CF5E3658B), forgot to post about that. Definitely a very different approach to the roguelike style and something everyone should experience at some point.
And yes, the 7DRL 2012 games are STILL going through. I finally got some Linux emulation going, so we'll be able to do just about everything at this point. (Except for DuneRL, which is Mac-based and unfortunately cannot be emulated legally on a non-Mac computer. Sorry about that!)
EDIT: Also also! I used to upload around noon EST: now I'm uploading around midnight EST. Just a heads-up.

Thanks Game Hunter for going through all the trouble it took to give Dark Valhalla a try and make a video for it. Did you make sure to use the latest version of the rules?
There were a couple things you got wrong rules-wise while playing, but that helps me figure out the parts I need to flesh out better.
The video has already given me ideas on how to balance it better. Wish you could have gotten some luckier rolls :P so you could have at least gotten out of the first room to show more of the other gameplay aspects.
The weapons listed that the enemies use are only for determining what weapons they can drop when you kill them.
Your weapon only gets empty if the final result of all your dice equal the target value. So in your first shot you didn't actually empty your weapon.
Also, did you check out the dossier file too? I was hoping to get it mentioned since it fleshes out the story and characters more.
I wanted to update this game again a while ago, but I only ever got feedback from one person and I've been working ridiculous hours at work. Still going to be a while before I get to it since this reply took about 30 minutes to write since I broke my hand yesterday morning at work.
Hope you get a chance to try it out on paper without worrying about video taping it and hopefully have some fun with it. .
Thanks again.

Whoops, forgot to update here quick enough: started up Rogue Survivor yesterday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M1HYYO7Ymo). It's looking to be pretty interesting, with a good potential for LP since I'm not even sure there's an overarching goal. Just how long can I survive!
7DRL 2012 playlist is basically done at this point. Assuming I can get some of the "unplayed successes" to work, there will be some bonus videos, but it's more or less complete. A big thanks to everyone who watched through most of them!
-
You've done great work on the videos thus far---here's to hoping we get a nice bumper crop of ARRP 2012 entrants to bury you in backlog once more. :P
-
Kinda late on this, but I have a playlist up for Spelunky (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL81ADFD6FDAFDBDA7&feature=view_all). Maybe pretty far for a blind LP, but I ended up accruing a few hours at least anyway, so I dunno if this ended up being typical or what. Really fun game, though, definitely worth trying out.
Right now I'm playing through a game called Red Rogue (http://youtu.be/tpndojWMhVg). Liking it a lot as well, although there are some less polished features that are somewhat detrimental to gameplay quality. Considering this game isn't done, though, I'm not marking the problems as "reasons not to try the game". We'll see how things go in the future.
-
Cheers dude. Some pretty useful feedback I can implement in the videos. Will get saved games working as soon as I can, it's a big task but I think it's well over due now.
-
I will be attempting double LPs now that work has died down some. Thus, there are two new roguelikes at the same time:
Angband (http://youtu.be/_NMSqmIIMv8) is a game I'm pretty sure everyone knows once they start searching for roguelikes to play. A true classical piece with almost endless variants, one of which I've already played (ToME, at least at the core). The idea is that, once I finish up here, I'll move on to another traditionally-paced roguelike, so there will always be a stream of roguelikes made for and crafted by veterans of the genre.
Delver (http://youtu.be/gXukR5XOwv8), on the other hand, is quite special in that you're in a first-person action-oriented environment. You still have plenty to figure out as you go, and there's already a good chunk of challenge that the game throws at you, but it's certainly designed for another niche of players. Once completed, I'll start up a roguelike that is designed in a more contemporary fashion: ignoring a good deal many of the "standard" features of a roguelike while still maintaining the spirit of the genre.
So yeah, that's the plan! Hopefully I can keep it up as long as possible. There's even the possibility for extra videos as necessary, so don't forget to request and ask about the games I've played or have yet to play.
-
Digging the plan of attacking things from various directions in the Roguelike spectrum.
-
Hoo-wee, been a while since I updated here. I'll be quick.
Angband (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL120B20F201414550) finished, but not before gathering a whopping 26 videos! Not sure how many people would be interested in thirteen hours of blind Angband gameplay, but it's there, managing to reach floor 32 on my good run.
I've also gone through a few games in the meantime, including:
- Mercury (http://www.decisionproblem.com/mercury/)
- Prospector (http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/)
- BileBio (https://github.com/jabb/BileBio)
- Final Fantasy Worlds (http://www.rpgrevolution.com/game/final-fantasy-worlds_1997.html) (currently playing)
So yeah, lots going on in the channel. As always, still looking for new things to try, so feel free to request anything.
-
Updates again. Woo!...
Epilogue (http://kraflab.com/blog/?page_id=16) (demo and full versions)
PrincessRL (http://flend.net/princessrl/index.html)
I also did another run of Aliens the Roguelike in celebration of a new update (because I'm still a big fan of Chaosforge). You can check out a preview (http://youtu.be/0Z7atpqmeco) of the new version, or see the run itself (http://youtu.be/xOq0KIzIf2U).
Currently my "classic" roguelike side is, instead, a modern game that uses a lot of classical elements in its execution. (Epilogue was the same, in fact, so those of you interested in that niche should look at over there too.) It's called Caves of Qud (http://forums.freeholdentertainment.com/)! Liking it a lot so far, and we'll see how long I live.
On the "expanded" roguelike side is a real-time survival adventure type called Notrium (http://www.instantkingdom.com/notrium/). It's a huge change in the typical pace (that is, turn-based) but I'm having a blast nonetheless, in more ways than one! Recently I switched to using Fraps for the recording, so the framerate improves over the course of the videos.
Finally (and I'll post in the appropriate thread just to make sure people know) I'm taking suggestions for ARRP games to play! Unlike 7DRL, which consisted entirely of fresh games, ARRP is more on the update side, some of which are more drastic than others. To this end, I'm going to work on playing what people would like to see: the number of videos I use to explore each request depends on the updates and how much I've played it already, if at all. You can comment here or in the comments of this ARRP introduction video (http://youtu.be/K9eIEb3ZKZY).
That's it for now. I'm sort-of holding off general suggestions since there's likely to be lots to play with regards to ARRP, but my eyes and ears are always checking for requests nonetheless.
-
If you're not opposed to the realm of real-time, I would love C&C on lanarts:
http://adam-dev-blog.blogspot.com/
But I understand if such things are outside the scope of 'roguelike' to you :)
-
So Caves of Qud went pretty well, but it's time to move on. During that escapade I've been working through a number of games updates or created for the ARRP 2012. You can find the ever-updating playlist here (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLefBsUqEQ6aEZAdJhBffaYKaFstj4OiLW).
If you're not opposed to the realm of real-time, I would love C&C on lanarts:
Yours was one of the games I've gotten to so far.
In more recent news, I've begun a playthrough (http://youtu.be/5dAHU_BswAQ) of Omega (http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/Omega)! I honestly have no idea what I'm getting myself into, but I'm sure it'll dawn on me eventually.
-
Hey Game Hunter,
I've just now become aware that you did a test drive video for @Star Wars. It was a good kick in the pants to remind me that other people besides myself might actually play the game at some point, and so I probably shouldn't assume everyone is as familiar with the game as me.
Coincidentally, 0.5a (the latest and greatest version [hopefully]) focuses on making the game a bit more accessible and reducing the number of arbitrary key presses necessary. Taking into account your test drive video, I'm going to remove the misinformation from the in-game readme (and the .txt one, if applicable) and also expand the information they provide.
I realize in your video description, you kind of apologize for being too harsh. I genuinely enjoy your reviews and think you touched on all of the right areas where @Star Wars was or continues to be flawed. Ultimately, I really can't criticize you for any "harshness" in your criticisms, because it was honest and constructive. 0.5b will be released in a few days and will include a number of changes prompted by your review.
A "gimmick" isn't a bad idea. Right now I'm trying to polish some of the existing mechanics and also improve the quality of the two existing manuals, but beyond that I have a lot of ideas. An underlying plot, more dialogue, deeper combat, and/or some kind of long-term strategy element.
Thanks again and I hope you'll consider doing another one someday!
-
Ultimately, I really can't criticize you for any "harshness" in your criticisms, because it was honest and constructive.
The criticism itself wasn't demeaning or anything, but I thought that the tone I used was a little patronizing. Since I play a ton of roguelikes, I start to see common elements in games, and @Star Wars gave me the sensation of being samey, which probably got me into a "father figure" role on how to do better. I dunno.
The ideas you suggest towards a more unique game sound good to me. Plot and dialogue would especially work well in the Star Wars genre, since many people are already in the proper atmosphere when playing the game. A lot of plot-heavy games end up not being cared about because they don't want to digest yet another storyline, but if Star Wars is your base, the hook's already been taken care of.
In the meanwhile, let's take a look at past/current stuff. Aside from finishing Omega, I also quickly and quieted completed Meritous (http://asceai.net/meritous/), a top-down action roguelike that goes by pretty fast if you know what you're doing. It's one of the rare occasions I've played the game beforehand, not that it seemed to help me all that much!
Right now there are two playthroughs, both fairly early in their respective series: Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/), which I'm sure just about everybody knows, and Cataclysm (http://whalesdev.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page), which a lot of people seem to know about in spite of being pretty new. Go check 'em out!
-
Hey Hunter I showed my brother your play through of Sun Crusher!!!
He laughed. :-)
-
Well dang, it's been too forever since I last updated here. I haven't done ALL that many new games, as the vast majority between updates was covered by the colossus that is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. But let's go through the others quickly, since they were pretty short playthroughs:
Alan's Psychedelic Journey (http://exador.sourceforge.net/apj.html)
Get Out!! (http://code.google.com/p/getout/)
Dungeon Dash (http://andrewsum.com/)
Dungeon Dashers (http://dungeondashers.com/)
Current projects include Dungeons of Dredmor (http://www.dungeonsofdredmor.com/), a very recent roguelike with some very interesting innovations; and Hydra Slayer (http://www.roguetemple.com/z/hydra.php), a puzzle roguelike where all you do it cut off heads. Good times!
-
And another forever later...
My last two projects finished up, Hydra Slayer long before, but I took a little break from the second side with a few videos in between. Those included some looks at various roguelikes using NotEye (http://www.roguetemple.com/z/noteye.php), a roguelike frontend that allows for a variety of additional graphical modes, including tiles, isometric, and even a first-person perspective. I tried out DoomRL, Brogue, and Frozen Depths under these possibilities, and the results are rather interesting.
In the meantime, however, I'm currently playing Rogue (http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Rogue), the one and only. It'll be an explorative LP, trying out a good many versions and direct variants of the game, all the while trying to see exactly what makes the game tick and why so very much people found it appealing.
On the flip-side, we have Elona (http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html), a roguelike styled similarly to JPRGs (I'd even say it reminds me a lot of RuneScape). Tons to do but plenty of grinding to get there, which is exactly what you'd expect given the inspiration.
-
Ah, Rogue! This is still one of the great roguelikes to this day despite it cannot compete with numerous features put forth by modern RL games. Definitely going to watch your LP. Shall comment when I have finished.
-
The funny thing about roguelikes is that you can play them for a bunch of times, get destroyed, ragequit, only to be back a few weeks later as if it didnt happen. I would say that the best feature of them is the time it really takes to complete. The game might be 8-12 hours long (like Cardinal Quest), but because you lost 7 characters in the process-this becomes 30-40 hours time total.
-
So I did a quick playthrough (and by quick I mean 16 videos' worth) of Diablo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_%28video_game%29), the original. It was a good amount of fun! One of the few playthroughs I've done that wasn't blind from the start, so we managed to get through the whole of it!
Mostly I'm posting because I wanted to point out that my 7DRL Challenge 2013 videos (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLefBsUqEQ6aEGvIacxhy1e2hHbnHzVMrH) have begun! It was a real bumper crop this year, and I'll do my best to pump out videos at a good pace so that we're not stuck with them for too long. If you want a particular game played (for whatever reason, so long as it was actually successful), I'll be sure to make it a priority.
-
I did a run down of every game real quick on the main 7DRL page. There are some fantastic games in there. You might check out my list and see which ones are great right out of the box.
http://7drl.org/
-
Hey Hunter do you want to do my game? You did great with Sun Crusher!!! last year.
I made a thread for my 7DRL2013 here:
http://forums.roguetemple.com/index.php?topic=3082.0
Keep up the good work.
-
EXELent Rogue. It's very interesting.
-
Dude!
You need to review PELI of this year's 7DRL.
You start naked with a 1 pixel wiener showing. Yes. Nudity. Freakin' high lair y us.
;D
-
YAY you did a review of my game. So happy.

YAY you did a review of my game. So happy.
If anything I feel bad that the video came out so late. I had a block on one of my videos, preventing me from posting videos with a length greater than 15 minutes, and your game's video was in that category: ideally you would've seen it a couple weeks before.
Fun game though, really good job this time around.
-
Thanks Hunter. It came together pretty well. Can't believe you beat it so quickly.
Next time I'll include a hard mode.
-
Hey, I've gotten around to watching more of your videos after enjoying your video about my 7drl and I have to say that watching your channel is an awesome way to get acquainted with lots and lots of roguelikes without having to fuss around with downloading and installing them and figuring out what's going on (for which I definitely have way less patience than you, Mr. GameHunter). Also, very helpful in determining how to develop more approachable games. Keep up the great work!
I wonder whether you ever played any games from the 30[5-8]9 line? I think it would be interesting to see your take on them, as they look like they should major, but I haven't noticed roguelikers giving them much attention (for me, they weren't approachable enough, but as I have said, my determination to "get into" games is very low).
-
Whoops, I absolutely forgot to make a proper update here! The 7DRLs are more or less finished (save a few stragglers I'll post whenever I can get them running) and so we move on to the multi-video series.
In the "classic" side of things, though certainly not by objective, I'm learning the ins and outs of UnReal World (http://www.unrealworld.fi/). It's all about survival and making a home in the unforgiving and sinister wilderness. It's also about throwing rocks at a squirrel until it falls out of a tree and then bashing its skull open! (Not that the game is particularly gory about it, but you gotta do what you gotta do to stay alive.)
On the flip-side of modern and sassy roguelikes, we enter the realm of mutants, zombies, and tears in the rug of spacetime with Teleglitch (http://teleglitch.com/). It's fast-paced, it's pretty hard, and I'm loving all of it. I won't say that the controls get in the way, but the general control scheme is unorthodox and takes a little time to adjust to: that said, once you're well-immersed in the interface, you run into some really exciting situations.

Y'know, I've heard of that game series before within the roguelike community, but I haven't gotten the chance to explore it. Gonna have to put that one down on the list, nice and proper. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!
-
Because of the way things are in terms of timing, I have three games in the cycle at the moment and, if anything, UnReal World is probably the least roguelike of them (or at least the least mechanically-similar to Rogue). Teleglitch is done , doubly so because I actually beat the game! Instead we have:
- Dungeonmans (http://www.dungeonmans.com/) is a currently-Kickstarted (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/56637190/dungeonmans-the-heroic-adventure-roguelike) roguelike and one of the devs asked me to play it so I'm playing it. Really liking the sensory aesthetics so far and the basic mechanics include both classic and innovative bits. For comments about the game itself you're probably better off going to this thread (http://forums.roguetemple.com/index.php?topic=3435), but anything regarding my own playthrough and commentary is welcome here.
- The Wizard's Lair (http://www.wizardslair.co.uk/) slides into more humble roguelike category with just the basics and a few amusing changes here and there. Been a while since we've seen a game (outside of 7DRL) that takes this approach, and I don't mind analyzing the formula more rigorously for the goods and bads! Prior to this year's 7DRL, the developer asked me to try it out and, now that we're finally out of that marathon, we can see what this game has to offer.
- UnReal World is still moving along, of course! I'm seriously considering if I should move this one to like, a "dedicated weekend" slot, since there's a lot of time not actively commenting on the situation and more about the steady progress of a lifestyle. I'll keep it in my regular group for the time being, but I also think we should move on from it soon.
And as always (even if I didn't mention it last time), let me know what you think! I've been at it for nearly two years at this point but I don't consider myself at all a veteran of either live-LPing nor roguelike-playing. I'm always eager to hear your praises, suggestions, criticisms, or anything else of that sort.
-
Heh, you're an insane veteran by now. I've seen a lot of appreciation around for your 7DRL vids. You should update your sig, incidentally...
-
Yep, ya do great work there G.H. 8) You've even weathered my endless harassment/suggestions for Roguelikes to tackle at some point in the mix this entire time!
-
Can't get my friends to play my games.
But i can get them to watch your vids.
-
Hi! I'm back from not making videos! Sorry for not at least mentioning anything about it, kinda ran out of steam and, true to what I'm personally used to doing, completely detached myself from all things related to it. But I've returned, just in time for this year's 7DRL! You can find the playlist here (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLefBsUqEQ6aGZeL11nqqfkcrTXvg46eK5): it's basically empty right now but expect it to fill up starting Monday night.
Like last year, if you want me to play your 7DRL game (or play one you've tried and liked, or play one 'cause it sounds cool) let me know with a reply and I'll prioritize them over the others. I'm hoping to pump out at least two every day (not just weekdays), it depends on how many roguelikes there are this year: I would like to finish before June this time.
As for whether or not I'll be returning to a regular schedule after 7DRL, I'm keeping that tentative. I have a new hobby now (speedrunning, just gonna paste some twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/capnclever/) and YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/UberGameHunter) accounts if it sounds interesting to you) which, combined with my still full-time job, leaves little room for other stuff. I might play games by request, I might do games I think are interesting, and who knows how many videos per series. The 7DRL playthroughs will give me a good sense of how much opportunity and interest I still have, so we'll see how it goes!
-
I'd like you to play mine (Beware of Strange Warp Points), but no rush :)
-
This is awesome news! I was really missing your letsplays, GH! Hope to see you playing my game eventually, but I don't want pushing it on you now, maybe later at some point ;D
-
Cool Hunter. I used to like to run myself. Now I'm more of a weight lifter.
-
If you could review Hellspace (http://www.numeronreactor.com) that would be awesome.
I've addressed your major critisism from my last year's game Rogue City Scavanger - that it was way too hard - by tuning the game to my normal standards, and then adding an additional easy mode where the player gets 40% more health to play with. Also you seemed to get bored reading the story so I cut down on that side of things considerably too.
Critisism in normal reviews are a great way to improve, but there is stacks more to learn from LPs all hiding away in the unsaid info. Just watching how other people play your game - and indeed roguelikes in general - can really teach you a lot.
Looking forward to watching a whole bunch of different ones!
-
Cool Hunter. I used to like to run myself. Now I'm more of a weight lifter.

My dry humor fell flat. :-)
-
Also you seemed to get bored reading the story so I cut down on that side of things considerably too.
I reckon that has less to do with me getting bored of reading the story and more with me getting bored of dictating the story. I tend to read what's in front of me (maybe I'll stop doing that every single time) so something that takes a while can drag on and I can already feel the viewers waiting for me to get to the gameplay. That is, I wouldn't call it a fault of the game, rather a fault of my own presentation. I WILL say that simple games should have small stories anyway: that's just my raw opinion, though, and it will vary from player to player.
-----
Eben suggested that I make a thread in the 7DRL forum for all the games I do, so any updates on my journey through this year's games will be found there (haven't made the post yet but I'll refer a link when it is). In addition to the post linking the video I'll try to write up some short review: nothing that goes past what I played in the video but hopefully involving details I didn't mention. Feel free to reply in that thread or, as always, comment on the videos themselves through YouTube.

I got it Jo.
Glad to hear you're back gamehunter.
I could suggest a few that would be interesting to see some video's on.
NLarn would be cool to see.
Also some of the variant's of older games like Unnethack, Crawl Light/Lite, quickband, and Ironband.
DaybreakRL and Kerkerkruip are interesting combinations of roguelikes with interactive fiction that would be cool to see a vid on.
Occult Chronicles is worth at least one episode I think.
Anamnesis is pretty interesting as well.
Larva Mortus is a pretty cool Action roguelike-kinda game. Empires and Dungeons would also be a cool obscure one.
There may also be some games worth revisiting that you've already done for at least a single episode since they have progressed/changed quite a bit. Like Infra Arcana, Donnie Russel's port of Rogue, and Delver.
For something really obscure, Fatal Labyrinth for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is actually pretty cool for what I believe to be the first console roguelike.
Desktop Dungeons maybe?
A series on the Oryx challenge games would be pretty rad too.
Okay. Maybe that was a lot of suggestions instead of a few. :P
As far as speedruns go, it would be kinda cool to see you do a Doom speed run since you started out doing DoomRL vids. Aprticularly Playstation Doom or DOom64 since they aren't done as much as PC Doom speedruns. You can get both to play on PC with the PSX Doom TC and Doom64 EX ports.
I saw your Keen vids and I think Dangerous Dave Trilogy would be cool in a similar vein to the Keen games. Jazz Jack Rabbit too.
