Triles [7drl 2017]
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:43:41 PM »
Hey, first time poster and first 7 day rogue-like, though I've done lots of Ludum Dare games and I'm a rabid RL player. Anyway, hope I'm doing this right.

I'm trying something that I've been wanting to do for a long time, a game based on a triangular grid system. The name is a portmanteau of Triangular Tiles. I've tried this three times before and each time I've quickly realize why no one works with triangular grids-- because it's a real pain. This time around though I think I've finally got a good system and it's working well!

Of course something experimental and complicated like this is a terrible idea for a 7 day challenge, I'm aware of that. But it's been a great motivator for me to get this system ironed out so I can use it in other games. And honestly even if I don't get the roguelike finished it's already been a great success for me in that respect.

I'm a Unity developer by day, so I'm using that to save time since I'm so familiar with it. Here's a progress shot:

Level generation, check.
Movement on a wonky grid, check.
Faking line of sight with lighting shadows, check.
I'll have to do real los at some point.

I'm hoping to have some basic combat done by tonight

Several things have taken me way longer than expected, but I'm still happy with the progress. Clearly I'm not going to finish this in seven days, but I've now got a strong toolset that I can use for future projects. And hey I may actually get some gameplay out of this by tomorrow.

Many thanks to my friend and partner in crime Greg, who made the awesome low-poly character, bat, and stairs models, and the soon to come goblin model.
