I never knew there`s a successor to the wildly popular DoomRL in the works...just stumbled upon it while browsing ChaosForge forum.

Jupiter Hell was announced in 2013 and then all went rather quiet...but the studio broke the radio silence couple of weeks ago:

http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,7646.msg65363.html#new

Seems they`re still at it, just messing around with 3D engine and such.

Hey, thanks for the shout out. There is nothing sent from the Jupiter Hell newsletter so I assumed there are no signs of life.

On another matter this looks nothing like a roguelike. Lets wait another year or two for some gameplay footage.

They've just been quiet about it, but I follow Kornel on Twitter and chat occasionally: They set up an office some months ago and are working full time on JH.

About not looking like a roguelike, From what I know I don't believe it will depart too far from the formula, and the game also even has an ASCII mode, they just haven't shown it recently.

Hooray! It is very nice to know the team has classic roguelike enthusiasts in memory.

Sounds great, looking forward to see Kornel's next creation.
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

About 15k$ by first day looks pretty promising.

They are trying really hard with that kickstarter. It may be difficult to reach the goal, but who knows?

Nice! I don't like the 3d artstyle (it should be much darker in my opinion) but it sure looks promising!

EDIT: I'm blind, sorry

Another interesting thing is how much this game has that Doom brand feel? Sometimes they sue indie developers for using a commercial brand which I guess is understandable, because it's lot easier to use an existing brand to produce money.

Nah, they'd have no leg to stand on given JH is just running along a theme with their own take on it---not unlike how there are projects chasing after Master of Magic or classic Heroes of Might and Magic here and there except most of those fail from the starts vs Jupiter Hell charging boldly ahead into their own territory.

A bit over a quarter of the way there now---pretty good sign on KS for the first couple days!

What theme? DoomRL is obviously based on Doom, but it's free (I think) so often it doesn't bother the IP owner. But in this case, I wonder what is id software's (or the company that owns them) opinion about this. If you would make something based on Nintendo's games you would surely get a notification to take it down.

But Jupiter Hell is a thing unto itself as a spiritual successor to doomRL itself which played out entirely different to doom itself especially given it being a FPS and all?  Nintendo is off in their own world of delusion when it comes to matters even remotely tangential to the likes of even something this far removed so as to be a poor barometer.

This seems like an awful big stretch for concern.

IP only really applies to story stuff, and for that there is zero reference. Everything is rebranded. Sure, it's similar in certain aspects, but so is Quake.

Also from what I understand some of the id software people really like DoomRL :)

Says who? It does apply to everything as long as you can see it's a clone of some game.

But Quake was also developed by id software. I don't know guys. It looks like you could be stepping into a trap. Nice guys of id software may be first watching how much JH gets money and then strike.
