Update #1

Renowned Explorers has been out for just a week. We're glad and proud to say that there are many players enjoying the game. The community already welcomed a lot of people posting their adventures, helping each other and discussing balance. The subject of difficulty came up often. Many liked it, many found it too hard, and some of the more masochistic people found it too easy.

A perfect fit for Difficulty Options. We now offer Easy, Normal, Classic and Impossible to make sure that every player can adjust the experience to their liking. You select it at the start of every game, and it will be shown in your score screen. For the people that liked the game as it was: Classic has exactly the same balance as the game at launch.

To make sure that ambitious expedition leaders always have More to Explore, we also added in a bit of new content in the existing expeditions. You'll have to discover it to know what it is :) For the rest of our intentions, please consult the Game Roadmap pinned in the Community Hub. Patch notes can be discovered there as well.

Other than adding in difficulties and content, we fixed some issues that people were experiencing.

We wish you many more happy and appropriately hard adventures!

Patch #4
While we aim to release a big content patch in the middle of October, there's a lot of things that we could do to improve your experience right now.

Captain Perks - Many people noticed that Anna's Captain Perk, a bonus that you get for selecting her as captain, is stronger and more fun than other perks. We thought about nerfing it, but since a lot of people enjoy playing like that, we decided to keep it in. Instead we experimented with some replacement Captain Perks for other Captains that play equally nicely to Anna's and Kiwi's captain perks. So try out Yvonne, Charles and Dolores to find their new captain perks that will influence your strategy during the whole game.

Character Inspection during Menus - There were complaints about not being able to inspect perks, stats or items while shopping around, making a choice in a Story or doing something else. Frankly, we were clicking around too much ourselves as well. From this patch on, you can click your character's portraits while in a Entourage/Item Shop, Story or any other UI to make a better choice. You can't however swap items while doing something else.

Loads of balance - Adriaan, our lead designer whom you may know as AbbeyAdriaan in the Community Hub,has been keeping an eye on how people play by looking at your posts and our testers. Informed by you, he made many small changes to increase the number of viable strategies and tweak the challenge curve. Check the full patch notes to see what changed.

Achievements - A number of people discovered that a few achievements didn't trigger correctly. We can now say with certainty that you can 100% complete Renowned Explorers. Good luck, expedition leaders.

A Bunch of Fixes - Rutger, one of the gameplay programmers at the Abbey, has been fixing a bunch of small issues that were reported here on the forums or elsewhere. Again, view the full notes for this. Think of serialization problems, interfaces for small screens.

We hope all these improvements help you enjoy the game more and longer.

Venture forth!

Patch #4: UI Improvements, Captain perks, Achievements, Lots of Balance
Change notes [September 23, 14:30]

- You can now inspect crew member perks and stats during stories, Shops and other menus by clicking their portraits.
- Yvonne has a new captain perk! Her Devious boost now gets better with each expedition completed.
- Charles has a new captain perk! His perk improves campaign tokens every time you buy a specialist, much like Anna's captain perk.
- Dolores has a new captain perk! She can make Collect tokens give great Status, which improves every time she succeeds on the Adventure Wheel.

- Transylvania treasures give a lot more Insight.
- Buff gained from gloves in Sydney now add 40% damage instead of 25% damage.
- Hungarian Fort (**) has more battles and gives more tokens.
- There are a few less study tokens in the Caribbean
- Made getting Research Papers progressively more expensive.
- The starting bonus of the Science tree in the papers has changed to give +1 study on technique challenges
- "Field Rations" now requires "Opening Doors"
- Bonus from "Training Regimen" paper is now +2 Attack whenever a Fighter succeeds on the adventure wheel.
- Fighters' attack slightly boosted.
- Earl's captain perk now gives 4 Collect tokens per Paper.
- Amir's Compliment isn't awesomely strong anymore
- A certain non-existing creature in Shangri-La is now more approachable. (Adventure Wheel is actually passable).

- Fixed a few broken achievements. 100% completion rate is possible.
- Fixed quest/story state on expeditions sometimes not saving properly
- Added option in the Settings menu to disable cloud syncing of save games

Patch #5

Today's patch has been in beta for a couple of days, but now everyone can access it. It improves the Highlands and Egypt and adds/rebalances items.

The patch is a small (but significant) one, as we're mostly working on the free content update all of you will receive in about two weeks. In the meanwhile we applied some learned design lessons to improve some items and increase the event quality in the Highlands and in the Egypt expedition. We also fixed some bugs.

- A new trinket in New Orleans: The Spyglass
- Some new endings and a new event in the Highlands and Egypt.

- A lot of trinkets have their price down, usability improved, and usage simplified.
- Trowel and Broom boost fixed to melee range, and power decreased to -20 Speech Defense.
- The Highlands has it's treasures scattered over more events. Plays a bit more like Caribbean now.

- Some remaining issues with achievements.

Mali Mystery free DLC   8)

Since our release in September we have had a very positive response by a community full of Renowned Explorers. For us developers it's great to be in the forums when people are so appreciative of the game we've been working on so hard. And many of you are helpful in making the community a nice place. This response inspired us to expand upon the game with a new expedition, available now as a one-time free DLC, which is automatically downloaded.

Except for this large content boost, we'll be updating the game with smaller updates every two weeks for the rest of 2015. These will focus on balance, but might contain new secrets and adventures too :)

You'll meet new characters and discover fresh adventures and treasures in a set of new environments in Mali.

On top of this we've added Leaderboards. You'll find them in the main menu. They'll show a list of all your own campaigns, both successful and failed ones. But what is more interesting to aspiring World Famous Explorers is that you can now also compare your best scores with the best scores of your Steam friends. Time to start thinking about your optimal strategy with Ivan!

Now, it's time to start discovering all the new mysteries in Mali. We hope you'll enjoy it! If so, please consider writing a positive review and leaving a comment in the Community Hub. That always helps and shows us we should do this more often ;)

Go find yourself some treasures, explorer!

- Added a new expedition: Mali Mystery.
- Playthroughs are now recorded in local leaderboards.
- Playthroughs can now be compared with Friends through online leaderboards.
- Fixed some small achievement issues.

Getter, based on what I see as this game's content, do you think that the Curious Expedition merits a log on this site? Or do you figure they have enough publicity elsewhere?

Hard to say really, I know that their launch tremendously under-performed their hopeful expectations, as per their little post-mortem dealie on Reddit---but hopefully the Mali DLC and all these updates remaining in 2015 will turn the tide a bit.

They've yet to catch fire anywhere near something like, say, FTL, which they drew ample inspiration from.

Patch #10, the first half of a bold move or so indeed...   8)

A few months ago we promised to update Renowned Explorers every two weeks in 2015. Even in these last few weeks, we have 2 more big Patches planned for you! One for today, and one for later in December. These patches greatly increase the replayability of Renowned Explorers so that you can have many more fresh adventures next year. And while our patch program will not continue in 2016, we will be announcing exciting news for Renowned Explorers's future. It will be even better than bi-weekly patches so keep an eye out the coming weeks!

Completely new Tech Trees
While the previous tech trees offered lots of different strategies already, we believed they focused too much on specific character classes. This means that your Research strategy was largely determined by your crew choice. To increase the number of available strategies we created entirely new Research Trees. These new trees focus on very different aspects and allow you more control over your Supplies capacity. We've already found a lot of new strategies, and trust that you will find even more. Start up the game now to test it out. And let us know what you think!

Pedrinho's new Captain Perk
If you've been playing Renowned Explorers these past few weeks, you'll have noticed that we're gradually improving Captain Perks for several characters. This Patch it's Pedrinho's turn. His new Captain Perk 'FUNraiser' focuses on his qualities as a party host to gain funds during Campaign jobs across the world.

The new Research trees grant you much more control over the amount of Supplies you bring on expeditions. Supplies are a powerful tool for increasing your expedition length. To keep the game fun we balanced a lot of the supply costs and gains for traveling and rewards. So don't be surprised if your expeditions from now on seem harder or different. Just make sure you prepare well with the new Research tree!

- Completely new Research trees. All trees have been replaced with new ones that allow more different strategies.
- Supply gain and usage over the whole game changed.
- Pedrinho has a new Captain Perk! His parties in Paris, Mumbai, Zanzibar and Cape Town are OFF. THE. CHARTS. (Rivaleux is not invited)
- Asian jobs now also give a lesser token, trigering some upgrades and treasures.
- Crew members now gain an extra Trinket slot through leveling (instead of through Research). Level depends on class.

- Rollgames give 2 XP (instead of 1). XP required for Leveling increased.
- Fixed the most annoying thing ever in the game: Equipment shops now level through Gold! No more thinking: "darn, I still needed the Status I just blew on a helper."
- Agatha's Inspiring Course now comes one level later.
- Ivan base spirit raised to 45.
- Emilia base speech defense lowered to 20, base armor to 5, and speech to 22.
- Maria's base speech raised to 30.
- Mali villagers believe in the good heart of people a little longer (switch attitude later)
- Pedrinho's Party-Time cooldown increased to 4, cooldown Disarm increased to 5, power of partytime decreased to 50% and power of disarm decreased to 75%.
- Pedrinho gets the Survivalist - Navigation perk instead of Survivalist - Hunting on lvl 2.
- Emilia's academic bonus reduced to +1 Study
- Because of all the changes, Renown gain from resources has been reduced: Gold: 0.075, Status: 0.08, Research: 0.12
- Enemies on the Emerged Island are stronger
- Demons in Shangri-La are a bit weaker.
- Rose gives the Beguiler - Beautiful Smile perk instead of Beguiler - Storytelling
- Druid's sheep are now Highland Sheep

- fixed Roche's Anchor treasure
- fixed more achievement issues
- Fixed Dolores and Kwame's animations
- Rivaleux no longer shows any mercy! (fixed AI bug where Rivaleux wouldn't act)

- All non-enraging speech actions temporarily have a thanksgiving icon that triggers randomly instead of the original one. Spread the gratefulness!

- Science now yields less renown
- The level 2 entourage of Constantinople is now level 3 and vice versa
- Cernunnos Skull gives slightly lower gains
- Executioner's Axe gives collect tokens instead of battle tokens
- Crown of thorns gives 2 supplies on top of current effect, but only triggers 3 times and loses resolve boost
- Defensive items have a bigger disparity between their first and secondary buffs
- Philospher Stone now gives +2 Campaign when a lvl 2 Archaeologist succeeds on the adventure wheel
- Seth Maribre's Scepter now triggers on lvl 3 Tactician and Diplomat
- Helpers get more expensive more quickly
- Rio entourage is more expensive
- Constantinople Entourage more expensive
- Earl gained a little more speech defense, and his captain perk is boosted
- Hungarian Fort is a bit more balanced out with treasures
- The Group Insult debuff is now defensive

- Removed Thanksgiving
- Added in more than 30 new speech icons to convey more character during speech abilities.
- Fixed a crash occurring when getting too many of the same type of Entourage helper.

Patch #11!  8)
After months of updates we present you with the last update of our patch program in 2015. For those that want to keep discovering new things in the new year, there is a big announcement soon!

But first, the contents of Patch #11. We focused on two frequent requests you had for the game.

Freeplay after 5th Expedition
Renowned Explorers is about gaining as much Renown as possible before the Exploration Year is over. To this end you have come up with many creative, smart and powerful strategies. Since you are judged for your score after 5 expeditions (which is important for the game design) you sometimes don't get to enjoy your full power when your strategy's end game kicked in. With this Patch we introduced the option to continue playing after your 5th expedition. This allows you to buy that one extra item, or finish the research tree, reach max level or test out your crew in Shangri-La without losing the game. It's important to note that you won't get another chance at beating Rivaleux' score: you are judged after 5 expeditions and any new expeditions are purely for your own fun, as the challenge of time pressure is gone. But still, you get to explore the entire world with your crew!

Encounter movement
Renowned Explorers is a Turn-based Strategy game. This makes it about making interesting choices, rather than hand eye coordination. Sometimes you (and we as well) had the problem of misclicking a tile during movement. In a dangerous situation this could end your entire adventure. To relieve this we introduced the Undo Move button which allows you to redo your very last movement (not action!). Together with the ability to spend movement in multiple clicks, this will definitely ease your encounter play.

- You can now continue your expedition after it's over. One... more... expedition..
- Restart Expedition button added to allow faster restart on your first expedition
- Undo movement button added
- You can now do movement in steps
- Added extra tools for save game management for those of you with 100+ savegames :)

- Insight from Roche's Treasure and Water of Life reduced to 1.
- Trinkets are cheaper and weaker. Removed a lot of the weird side effects.
- Trowel and Broom aura reduced to -10 Speech Defense.
- Tactician notes reduced to 15% Attack boost.
- Selling price of items is now 75%
- Movement in Shangri-La a bit cheaper
- Offensive items are stronger, decent and good offensive items are 33% cheaper
- Defenses of some later level characters increased.
- Lecture Expert no longer doubles Discovery, Secret and TreasureHunt tokens
- Kwame's double helper boost now fires at lvl. 5 Quick Thinker instead of lvl. 3.
- Ramped up late game helper cost a bit

- Globus Cruciger gives 3 Campaign and 3 Collect per lvl of Diplomat, and 2 Insight
- Roche's Anchor gives 5 Collect per lvl of Stalwart, but 2 insight and 200 renown
- Roche's coat gives 5 Study per lvl of Naturalist, but 2 insight
- Roche's chest gives 1 insight
- Ritual book gives 1 insight
- Charlemagne's Hand no longer gives +5 Status from Campaign

- Fixed the issue where you would quit/crash out of the overworld and be unable to get a new city.
- Fixed Expedition Reports not working correctly.
- Fixed cultural awareness triggering on wrong jobs.

- Most Shangri-La treasures got extra Renown bonuses.
- Gold, Status and Research tooltip now show extra info about Renown gain.

- Cooldown of Strike of Fear raised to 6.
- 3rd and 4th tree of research significantly more expensive. This will allow you to actually OVER commit into science.

- Gold and Status now have the same Renown modifier: 8%. Research still has 12%
- Boosted the healing power of all speech abilities: "Try to.." from 20% > 30% (Impress stays at 25%) and normal from 25% > 35%.

- Heart: Terrified Nullify -> Resist, Speech 10->6

- One.. More... Expedition is no longer still enabled after starting a new game
- Revisitable nodes are now actually revisitable!
- Fixed an exploit where you could get treasures multiple times by click spamming
- Item Shop, Passport and Entourage Shop work a little better on smaller aspect ratios
- Final node in Shangri-La now shows an objective cross.
- Abilities that couldn't be used from next to opponents (like Piercing Shot) can now be used while standing next to Friendly defeated opponents on the edge of the arena.
- Some typos.
- Fixed that entering an encounter with Tactician's Notes crashed the game.

First of all, you will find two complete new expeditions on your World Map.

The Andean Adventure: A 3-star expedition into ancient Incan mountain territory. Find extremely valuable treasure by helping the different cities rise against the oppressive Emperor. Pay for the Llama Express to jump between areas of the map quickly.

The Lost Island: in this new end-game expedition the secrets of the Anti-Explorers will finally be revealed.. if your crew is capable enough to make it through. Go above and beyond, and you might just find the prehistoric and dangerous secrets hidden in the mysterious pink mist that covers this island.

With unique new mechanics and randomized content as before you'll go on countless adventures before uncovering every new secret and story.
More Stories To Explore
Wrestling star Dolores, Victor the veteran... you may think you know the 20 characters that REIS has to offer but there's more to their story. With the new Campfire feature you'll learn more about your favorite characters.

By playing Crew Story cards you weave new story lines through your adventure, exploring your crew's past, and allowing you to build relationships between characters. Let Anna teach her terribly intelligent lessons, help Ivan stand up for his moral code and decide who falls in love with Maria. No crew will be the same!

More Strategies To Explore
Renowned Explorers is about strategy, and More To Explore gives you brand new ways to build it.

Gathered around the campfire, your crew draws on their past and ambitions as they tell Campfire Stories of your choice. These stories play like cards from a deck, where each story has the ability to transform both your strategy and your crew. Compose different crews to create new decks and unlock new stories after every adventure.
Treasures already granted you nice bonuses, but in this expansion they become a real treat. Each discovery lets you choose from semi-random powerful bonuses, adding to your plan. And if you can't decide, chairman Pinkerton is there to help!

With this expansion you can be more certain than ever: no new adventure will be the same.

Patch #17  8)

The More To Explore release is just two weeks ago but it's already time for new content. Patch #17 adds the content that was unlocked in the 48-hour Community Content Challenge in which a whopping 190 explorers joined forces to unlock all tiers of content. So, what's new?

New Cities (Tier 3)
The sheriff of San Francisco and the king of Muscat are very impressed with the spirit of the Renowned Explorers. To attract more renown to their own cities, they've opened up new facilities for explorers! San Francisco will open up a modest new Entourage shop, while Muscat will offer exotic trinkets in its humble bazaar. Naturally, Sydney and New Orleans will respond accordingly to this new competition on the market...

New Andean Quest (Tier 2)

Expansion owners may discover a new treasure in the Andean Adventure, but not before overcoming one of the hardest challenges among level 3 expeditions. Go explore, before this dark force consumes the Andes.

New Stories (Tier 1)
Wherever you go after this patch, you might meet some of the Entourage specialists during their travels. A few events scattered everywhere.

Quality of Life
While working on new content, we've also worked to improve several features in the game. Most notably you can now swap items in the item shop by dragging a new item onto an equipped one... like in any RPG :) You can also dampen the pulsing Resolve and Research icons through the options and read more crewmember details in the Advanced Selection screen.

Patch #17.1 [June 14th, 19:20] (Build #373)
- Fixes a rare crash to do with scouting icons.

Patch #17 [June 14th, 17:40] (Build #370)
- You can now unlock Muscat, hosting a trinket bazaar in the Middle east.
- You can now unlock San Francisco, offering new entourage members
- A dark new force is terrorizing the Andes. (MTE)
- New events scattered all over the game, allowing you to meet more Specialists on their own journeys.
- Added option to dampen low Resolve and available Research warning pulse
- You can now (finally) swap your items by dragging \o/
- Added Crewmember Details box to Advanced Crew Selection screen.
- Added DLC and version indicators to leaderboard entries.
- Visual tweaks to scouting flags (the icons displaying information about unvisited nodes)

- Fixed bug where "sharpshooters alerted" message would pop up after every Friendly won encounter after Lost Island in Marathon mode
- Slightly dampened default low Resolve warning pulse
- Fixed Raptor Queen event
- Should no longer be possible to get stuck with unplayable cards in hand
- Fixed bonus descriptions in leaderboards
- Fixed Encounter token Renown gain for Captain perk for Maria and Victor
- Fixed Victor's captain perk only awarding 25% extra gold from Encounter
- Fixed a ton of missing/wrong text and pictures

- Toned down Inca Dagger and Emperor Garb
- Pedrinho will hate coffee haters
- Decreased Renown gain from Encounter tokens from Maria's and Victor's Captain Perk to 5.
- The machine in Lost Island doesn't allow for Resolve suicide anymore
- Shangri-La treasures are worth a lot more

Patch #18  8)

Following renewed interest in the game, we're continuing work on Renowned Explorers through at least August. For now, that means a fresh patch #18, with juicy content and a ton of balance and fixes!

With the More To Explore expedition we released the Lost Island, a 5-star alternative to Shangri-La. It has proven very popular and many players like it better than the Tibetan expedition both in terms of fun and game value. To help Shangri-La back up to its legendary status, we created new content and did some balance changes and fixes in both expeditions. Visit Shangri-La for a new treasure and some new events!

Captain Hatice
Hatice has a new captain perk! Many people don't know that the silent Hatice is a brilliant investor. It explains, feeds and expresser her greed. In Patch #18 we've made this into a new captain perk for her: Investor: +10 Collect at the start of each expedition. Gain 2 insight if you end an expedition with 50 Collect or more. Can you achieve a proper Return of Investment?

No-one escapes destiny
Over time Renowned Explorers has developed a dedicated community of Weekly Challengers. We never expected this competitive part of the game to become a community focus, but now that it is, we felt the need to work on some randomness issues to disincentivize constant reloading. Roll-games and encounter arenas are now pre-determined at island generation, so that when you fail a challenge, you won't be able to succeed in it by reloading the game. There are also some miscellaneous fixes for exploits.

More adventuring
On top of the above, Adriaan worked on a lot of balance to make the game more fun, based on community feedback. There are changes in cards, entourage, treasures, events and encounters.

Have fun on your adventures!

- Hatice has a new captain perk! Investor: +10 Collect at the start of each expedition. Gain 2 insight if you end an expedition with 50 Collect or more.
- Added a new treasure in Shangri-La!
- Added a few events in Shangri-La!

BALANCE (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧:
- Auctioneer and Impressionist Entourage removed from Stockholm due to misfitting
- All Stockholm entourage now give +1 token at level 4 instead of +1/+2 on level 2/5 (MTE)
- All Rio entourage now gives +2 tokens at level 6 instead of +1/+3 on level 3/6 (MTE)
- Lowered Earl's bonus from Weird Patents to 3% (MTE)
- Agatha's German Import will now only penalize 5 Study, 25 Speech Defense, and give 3 Campaign instead of 1 (MTE)
- It's not longer possible to bring the same Campfire Story twice. Any doubles will be left out of your deck at game start.
- Garb and starter treasures that give X tokens at the end of an expedition are a bit toned down (MTE)
- Shambhala Keys give 250 Renown instead of 150
- All final treasures from Shangri-La now have pool bonuses (MTE)
- Removed the skip encounter events in Shangri-La
- TRex and Darwin are significantly tougher
- Roll-games and encounter arena seeds are now pre-determined, which means loading to an earlier point no longer gives you a different chance. There's an exception for 'Retry Encounter' in Discovery mode, which still refreshes the seed.

- Can't get a rank A treasure in Turf house any more
- missing images, spelling errors
- Phillipe's card now works correctly
- Perk UI scroll resets to top when switching crewmembers.
- Exploit where opening inventory during events, saved the game state (but not the event progress).
- Issue where items could be lost by dragging and dropping an item from an incompatible slot on it.
- Issue where profile switching could recover a pre-win save from a finished adventure mode run.
- Issue where double clicking crewmember for targeted Campfire Stories triggered the story twice.
