Succession (7DRL 2014 - Complete)
« on: March 15, 2014, 12:10:01 AM »
According to legends, this is it: the dungeon wherein lies the mystical Amulet of Zot. Whoever manages to retrieve it will gain great power and glory. Only... it probably won’t be you.

You begin Succession as a rogue adventurer: a smart but perhaps unwise fellow celebrating your recent victory over a dire rat by seeking the Amulet of Zot. You will probably die. And that’s where your adventure begins.

When you are killed by one of the dungeon’s many occupants, you start back at the beginning with one minor change: you now control the monster who killed your previous adventurer. Should you die again, you will return as the monster who killed that monster, and so on. Someday, you’ll die to something that’s strong enough to claim the Amulet.

Succession was created for 7DRL 2014 and is available for you to play right now in your browser.

Nice. I really like the graphic style here.

I have a couple more days to go on my game, but I'll be checking this one out for sure.

HINT: I play them all?  :-)

This game froze when I got the amulet.

I like the core idea behind this, and your tiles look nice.

The levels are too big.  Those potions of life/strength are too good to risk missing out on, but that means thoroughly exploring those gigantic levels.  It's made worse by how you're expected to replay the game repeatedly.

Can't do much about the levels since the deadline has passed, but I fixed the Amulet bugs late last night.

Very cool idea. Although I might be biased, since I made a game last year where you could play as monsters, too. (Not saying you "stole" it or anything, it's not like I was the first to put possession in a game.) I like the fact that eating the meat of your enemies gives you their powers, too. I think I've seen that mechanic used somewhere before, but not to a very large extent...someone should make a 7DRL with that as the central mechanic...but now I'm just rambling.
I only played a bit so far, but I plan on coming back later. The one problem I did see is that the game never seemed to get keyboard focus, so if I pressed up/down the page scrolled up/down too.

Try turning Num Lock on if you're having that problem.

If you don't have numpad, you'll want to use the mouse anyway for diagonal movement.

Using mouse on laptops usually implies using touch pad. Very annoying, especially when there are enemies nearby, and you cannot click to move several squares at once. vim-keys (hjklyubn) actually help, no metter how retarded they seem. Many laptop users, like myself, already got used to those keys.

Yes, and I would add them if I weren't already past deadline already. Sorry about that.

You can also move with the mouse.
I did read the instructions, thanks. That doesn't change the fact that using the arrow keys moves the page.
Apparently it's pretty easily fixable if you're using javascript:

An updated version is available, fixing several major bugs and adding support for vi-keys. The original version is still available if you want to play a slightly buggier version (see the "7DRL/PDJ judges please read" link).
