The Ultimate Roguelike Tileset
« on: May 01, 2013, 03:15:43 AM »
Hello Roguelike creators!

I'm stopping by the forum because I know many of you are familiar with my sprite work on Brogue, Infra Arcana, Realm of the Mad God, or the LOFI Fantasy sprites that I made as part of the TIGSource competition a few years back.

I have recently completed a new set of higher resolution fantasy sprites that might interest you! The set features thousands of fantasy sprites including heroes, creatures, dungeons, items, portraits, cinematic sets, interface, and more!

Based on the style started with Brogue and Infra Arcana, the set is monochromatic allowing them to be colored dynamically in engine. The set also attempts to retain the simplicity, charm, and flexibility of ascii, with the advantages of a more modern look.

The set is called the Ultimate Roguelike Tileset.
You can get information on the set, including screenshots at: http://oryxdesignlab.com/ultimate

Please share with any forums or game authors you think might be interested!

Nice old school style. But what is the point of creating huge number of tiles without a game? It could be much easier first look for a game project and then create tiles for that game.

It's kind of what Oryx does, I guess. I mean, look around and you'll see his tiles in dozens of games, so I'd say his method is working fine :P

Quite like these tiles, may give them a try in the future when I have the money to spare. Of all the tiles though, those sci-fi ones are begging for a first person dungeon crawl, with the way you did the directions :P

This makes me want to make a new game. Really great feel, the contrast is so marked, yet pleasant and non-distracting.

Most likely future customer.

$35 is an absolute steal for this, and the ability to recolour in-engine is damned handy.

Really? I don't play games these days. It's actually a viable idea, you get money from each game developer using those tiles. Still, it sucks. I would want exlusive tiles for my game.

Except you don't have a game!

But seriously, I'd rather pay a bit more for an exclusive license, have you considered that option Oryce?

Yeah.  If I remember correctly, there was a contest at an indie developer site (tigsource I think?) where everyone participating was supposed to make a game using an Oryx tileset.  One of them is even on Steam now.

Oryx makes really nice stuff is what I'm saying.

Well, it wasn't really mandatory to use his tileset, but it was the best on show...

I actually participated but refrained from using his, because I'm so cool.

Exclusive tiles are better, but this set is pretty damned huge and as it's monochrome it can be recoloured to fit your game better.  Recolouring in-engine is especially handy.  Personally I see it as being pretty much equivalent to ASCII.  You don't care about an exclusive font, right?  The tiles are very clear and crisp and there's enough variety to suit any project.

Impressive. Looks very nice I must say! ...At least in B/W, not to fond of colorized versions.

I'm going to bookmark this, as I cannot get any of my real life friends to play my games because of the graphics. Shallow but true.

... You don't care about an exclusive font, right?  ...

Spent about eight hours over two days this week looking for an exclusive font, but it's so hard to tell if it would look good in-game before you buy them I'm still with the generic crowd
