Prospector Alpha
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:24:56 PM »
Hi guys! I present you: Prospector.

A marginally roguelike game with a space exploration theme.
Grab your scoutship and get rich.

Alpha version, its playable, winable (in theory) but you might still encounter a bug or 2, and balance could be an issue.

Feedback is of course welcome.

And zipfile with .exe and FB sources here

Enjoy, and tell me what you think!

I am wondering if people downloading 0.1.0 in the last few days are coming from here. it seems the most likely place actually :)

So let me tell you that at this link
http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/
there is 0.1.2 availiable with a handfull of more features and several bugs less.

And since this is the announcement subforum:
0.1.3 is about to leave my hardrive (just not quite yet) and it has some neat new stuff in it, so if you could bear 0.1.0, try 0.1.2 since it is more bearable and stay tuned for the most bearable prospector version yet :)

Well I missed it.

When 0.1.3 comes out I would suggest putting a news item in RogueBasin (See http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=News ) and posting in rec . games . roguelike . misc and/or rec.games.roguelike.announce.  (The latter is moderated and Google groups doesn't seem to work very well with it).

0.1.3 is finally out the door
short of it: more stuff, kinda everywhere, and some minor cosmetics applied

long of it: Changes in 0.1.3

+ added the amulet of yendor
+ "G" throws grenades
+ "H" uses medpacks on awayteam
+ "R" on planets allows to call your ship by (R)adio. Mountains block contact. Some (on purpose) undocumented commands may be issued to the crew on board. (If you cant tell your crew what you want of them, tell me. I will try to talk to them)
+ "@" displays ship information
+ New type of dungeons
+ New type of planet maps
+ expanded & random shop inventorys
+ new stuff that can be found on planet surfaces
+ changed chances for acid rain & high winds
+ attacking monsters on impassable terrain is now possible by bumping into them
+ shooting monsters now have visible weapon beams
+ item system rehauled: an awayteam of 10 won't be able to fly with 9 jetpacks, 5 gaussguns are worse than 3, 10 aren't better than 8 when the awayteam consists of 7 people etc.
+ resources are a little more descriptive and variate much more in value
+ visibility is affected by orbit (the farther out, the less light)
+ maps for hard to map planets pay more
+ some new tiles for the new dungeontype
+ Fixed minor teleport bug (Cursor appeared at 0,0 instead of at player position and display didnt refresh)
+ Fixed a bug in LOS calculation
+ fixed some mistakes in monster generation while rehauling it
+ Changed post mortem files from .flg to .txt
+ minimum visibility reduced (from <=1.5 to <1.5)

Thanks Elig!
Aaaaaaaaaand bugfix:

Your awayteam always forgets to take their weapons with them, and as soon as somebody dies they take off their armor. Very embarassing that i didnt notice that before. So if anybody is actually playing it i strongly  suggest getting 0.1.3b

The new version has some interesting features, but it seems more buggy and less balanced than earlier versions.

My science officer hacked alien computers something like 3 times, netting me 1,000,000 credits each time.  Map data also seemed to bring in exhorbitant amouns of money.  I was able to buy over a hundred disintegrator rays before the end.  I assume that the life forms you find on planets scale relative to your power, as after doing that I started running into monsters with hundreds and hundreds of hit points.

After taking a mission to escort a guy from the middle starbase to the lower-left one, I had the game crash, printing "-1" forever.

I'm interested in seeing how the new features in the game play out, but unfortunately I think I'm going to have to wait for a future bugfix before really getting into the current version.

Ok, that sounds bad :(
And confusing too since those parts of the code haven't been touched since the last version.

Hmm... figured out the -1 one thing, and i totally deserve a slap on the forehead for that: The  game tries to put the mission objective into an undiscovered system, and returns the endless minus 1 when it can't find any. (Which is why i didnt run into it when i tested it, you may call me an idiot now)

And i figured out where the supermonsters came from, and the computer is again hackable only once. Strangely enough though i was unable to reproduce the 1 Million Credit thing curseman mentioned. Any additional info on that to help me track it down?

Bugfix version availiable at http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/downloads/list

I was given the million credits after going back to the base.  It said something about me selling the information on how to hack alien ships or something to that effect.

Found and fixed. Also some new stuff:

(I'll just be lazy and do copy paste):
Changes in 0.1.4
+ "C"ommunicating to aliens might be a bit more interesting
+ CTRL+C opens the configuration menu where you can
    Toggle autopickup
Toggle a Beep on low oxygen warnings (may not work on all platforms)
Toggle if you want to select items by hand or always want to use the best item
Toggle diagonal movement: if you move into a direction and its blocked an diagonal is automatically chosen
(This may help those who dont have the luxury of a numpad)
Toggle save screenshots (Converts extended ascii characters when making a screenshot)
+ "," Picks up an item when not in autopickup
+ "D" drops an item
+ "O" offers an item to an alien
+ shallow water no longer blocks movement, but uses oxygen
+ oxygen gets replenished in areas where there is enough of it
+ New Items
+ 2 new unique planets
+ Fixed a bug that "lost" unique planets
+ Botany works slightly different
+ New algorithm for making planet maps
+ New plants & "water" for exotic atmosphere planets
+ Fixed a bug in monstergeneration
+ Fixed a bug in a quest
+ Fixed a bug in item equipping
+ Fixed a bug that caused all your officers to retire when visiting the pirate bar
+ Fixed a bug that payed 250 Cr. wage to each missing officer
+ Shot inventorys on planets dont get reset on each entry anymore.
+ Killing trees doesnt get rewarded with 1.000.000 Credits anymore.
+ Rescuing the scout doesnt make you immortal for the planet anymore, and chances to find people alive are a lot higher
