Black Mage Goes Rogue, 7DRL2013 complete version
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:51:51 PM »
Black Mage, in a hurry to get his quest over with and claim all the glory himself, has killed the rest of the party and rushed toward the great dungeon to retrieve the Quintessence Crystal himself! Can he do it?

The black mage, your character, has any one of 10 spells of varying MP costs that they need to use to deal with enemies. Fire spells have the most area, bolt spells have the most range and damage, and ice spells are somewhere in between. There's also the almighty Ultima spell with its massive range, damage and area, but it also costs an arm and a leg for MP. Finally, more powerful spells cost far more MP and time relative to their increased damage than the weaker ones.

There are 10 floors in the dungeon, at the bottom of which is the coveted Quintessence Crystal. He can pick up curative items off of the bodies of defeated foes as well.

Status ailments:

Scared- Can't target spells. They automatically fire at the black mage's location.
Stopped- Can't move
Sapped- Taking damage over time
Silenced- Can't cast spells.

Is this for windows? I can't seem to open it. I get an error saying that it's not a valid win32 application.

This version should help. It's x86-configured.

I'll put it on the completion page for my game once 7DRL's WP site stops being glacial.

I think you can put it in compat mode for windows XP. You've probably tried that already but I just want to be sure.

I am running on windows xp. The only compatibility modes available are for windows 95, 98, nt, and 2000.

What operating system did you create it on?

I noticed under file type, it is refered to as a "consoleApplication1"

It runs on my Win7 x64, but console refresh looks really ugly and very slow, making it unplayable. Perhaps linux terminal has some optimizations, but for windows you should position your cursor to (0,0), instead of just clearing screen or putting another bunch of lines.

I created it under windows 7, x64. I also set it to 8x8. It didn't default the characters to 8x12 did it? If so, go to properties and change the tile size to 8x8. It looks infinitely better and I assume it was a step I forgot to re-do when I remade it under x86.

Also, I will do the 0, 0 thing in the future. That'll be the first post-7DRL change I make to this when I convert it to PreludeRL (a like-Final Fantasy-but-not roguelike)

Yeah, setting 8x9 size (or downloading file by first link) helps. Still blinks, but playable.

How's the game itself in terms of how it plays?

Well, except blinking and some other interface issues (things aren't visible under corpses, no information about which inventory item heal what, help dont works after appearing some messages in log) game is not bad.
Monsters aren't just letters, but have different abilities, and selecting a spell with corresponding radius is fun. I didn't get after first two levels, mainly because don't looking on hp, will try it later.

Those will be priority fixes, immediately after the 0,0 thing. Thanks Kipar!

Edit:

'Potions' restore HP.
'Ethers' restore MP.
Clarimentis removes fear and silence.
Antidotes remove ongoing damage (sap)
Remedies do the job of both the Clarimentis and the Antidote.
Elixirs do everything ever.

I'll fix those, do a full day of testing and QA in which I run over every line of code with a fine tooth comb, and then repost. I need this thing in a playable state and if it means spending most of my day tweaking it then I'll do that.

I'm beginning to think seven days wasn't enough time to do what I planned to do, but that's why I'm doing the post-work.
