The development of this game was begun at november 2002, as remake of Ragnarok game, created in 1992-1995 by Thomas Boyd and Robert Vawter.

In this roguelike-game, created on base of scandinavian mythology, you are brave viking, who must help the aces (the gods) to win in Ragnarok - the final battle against evil. This battle will determine the fate of nine worlds.

You begin in your village and can choose between the ways of viking warrior, woodsman, blacksmith, alchemist, conjurer or sage. Each way is different from others and has its own advantages and disadvantages, each new game is totally unique: worlds and their levels, lands, creatures, items and even merchants are randomly generated.

Playing the game you will pass through Midgard - the world of mortals, visit Jotenheim - the land of giants-jotuns, and Nidavellir - the labyrinth of caves, populated strange creatures, come down in dwarven great caves; you have a chance to visit lands, created by gods and greatest of ancient wizards, get through terrible Niflheim - the world of deads and search the mighty artifacts of the gods. Then you'll go to Asgard - the world of gods, to take part in final battle against powers of evil.

Common features

-6 player classes: viking, woodsman, blacksmith, sage, conjurer and alchemist.
    -More than 150 creature races.
    -More than 200 item types.

-Complex game database editor (all game space objects and their attributes are available).
-Built-in script language, allowing write additional handlers on any game events.
-Support operating systems MS Windows and Linux.
-Flat tiles and ASCII views of design.
-Support for Russian and English (the correctness of the English localization ~90%).

Latest (last?  I hope not!) Windows version release back on Jan 20 2009 0.99.3 which added "much corrections and innovations"   The gallery page also has some really nice looking screens.

So yes....this looks AWESOME folks.   Jolly Roger and friends, please don't leave us in a state of ignorance to your community's treasures.   ;) :D  I even think I'd ranted at some point in the past that is seems baffling that there hasn't been any active Raganrok/Valhalla development in all these years considering how big the original game(s) were for their time...

This is wonderful.  I've always loved the original DOS game, and am highly pleased to see this.

Great!  Please do get us some trip reports, impressions...maybe even additional screenshots/videos Shin Majin.  On the surface, it almost seems like it was made so that the people from the DOS days could have a good time going forward coupled with new ideas.

ох боже! Is there a translator in the house?? I loved this game back in the day - it looks like it's about 10% away from a complete translation. Wowzers! Getter, you struck gold again!

Heh, if you follow the links on their main site to the forum, you will notice our now familiar face of one Jolly Roger---hence why I specifically called him out on treasure hoarding in the OP!   ;) :P

I also think it'd be a good idea to get ahold of the main developer somehow, as he has had another birthday or so since then and it would be pretty great to see development on this liven up once more!

Er...well, yes.  I gave it a try, and was...a bit disappointed.  The game seems to have little more than the original, save for a completely reworked interface.  Aside from that, the game actually feels pretty broken.  Most of the enemies don't even act intelligently, or even attack you, allowing you to slay most of them with absolutely no threat to yourself.  You the starting village actually looks and feels like a village this time, however, which is a nice touch.

Regardless, with enemies that don't attack you (outside of ranged combatants and enemies with special attacks,) the game feels horribly incomplete.  There also doesn't appear to be a way to use ranged weapons...sorry, woodsmen.

How odd...did you try the less spiffy .99.2 console version as well?   From the Credits section, it would seem the game had a fair number of active testers, so you would think something like that would get caught straight away long before the version scheme made it THAT far...

We can always hope...and plot!   8)   I for one shall elect to dream big that it will revive up in time for ARRP 2011.   :)

Thanks for stopping in Jolly Roger.  How has your time with the game went, or any stories you can relate of Russian players?  Shin Majin seems to have ran into an odd situation with it above afterall...

It would be great, but ARRP is too close.  :-[

Hmm, as I know this game is heavily buged, but playable and winnable, and NPC are really eager to kill you.

I must confess, I didn't played Ragnarok for a long time, but there are lot of RLGclub folk here.
Maybe, they will participate our discussion, I had left link to this topic.

Thanks for the help Jolly Roger, hopefully ARRP 2011 isn't too close for a nice leap forward on FallFromHeaven the Roguelike.   8)

That said, if there are any other RLGclub projects that come to mind that you've not seen mentioned here, do let us know about the excitement.  Between here and there, I'm not particularly aware of any other Roguelike-centric forum communities---though I would like to think there must be one in Japan someplace, as nigh-impenetrable that would be for those that can't read Kanji and such.

Community unity  GO!   :D

So nobody else is having this same problem?  As for .99.2, the link for that is down, isn't it?

Nice!   8)  Hopefully they'll update the site and changelog in English at some point.  Seems to be at least something with SDL and whatnot...
