GenRoguelikes in development
« on: May 14, 2007, 11:12:14 PM »
Let's track the genroguelikes* in active development

Anyone has other projects to add?

* Genroguelike: Next generation roguelike with lots of exciting features. Projects are hard to handle, easy to promise heaven, but try to get there with a roguelike :)

Could someone tell some details about how incursion actually plays? I haven't tried it since theres no freely downloadable version of it out yet(I guess im too lazy to ask to test for them..)

*edit* Is this the board where we discuss Dwarf fortress, and other relatively new roguelikes that aren't major but aren't new either then?

*edit2* Seems that now that this is in the General category that question has been answered, doh!

Incursion is under beta testing now, you can mail Julian and ask if you want to take a peek at the preliminar version :)

About Dwarf Fortress, yes, that may be discussed here as it is still considered in-dev by the author

*EDIT1* no, Dwarf Fortess is to be discussed over the "in-dev" board :P (things changed)

I, as a playtester, I can say it is a really special game.

Interface is a bit psychodelic but once you grow accostumed to it you have lots of information at a glance, there is excellent descriptions for all the monsters, spells, skills, items and even *rooms*, thing that I find is great. God interactions are the best there can be, without promoting lots of sacrifices (except a few exceptions) but instead having to use "slots" so you have to make quality sacrifices, and piety grants you some kind of advancement on a Prestige Class so you actually get visible benefits from following a god (e.g: plusses to skill, stats, spells, etc, aside from the usual gifts). Also, each god has an excellent personality, which makes them feels "real".

About combat, you really have some options for overcoming obstacles. For instance, rogues can get experience by *stealing* all the valuable equipment and sneaking out without being noticed, so there is no need as a rogue to kill anything, or you can use Diplomacy to settle down a conflict (if the enemy is sapient) and still get experience as if you killed the monster, you can Offer Terms of rendition (using Diplomacy also) when an enemy is running away from you (invaluable as a follower of certain gods who do not like back-stabbing at all), so he drops his best item and becomes neutral (and gives you full experience) or Bluff to trick a just-attacked friendly that the attack was "only an error" so he does not attack you back, etc etc etc.

And... I don't know what more to say. Since it does not run on Linux, I have not been able to play it since February, when my win computer crashed and I switched to 64-bit Kubuntu. But there should be a Linux version really soon, according to Julian, so I'll just wait a bit more, and hope it works on 64 bits. ;)

It is truly an excellent game, in my opinion.

This "Incursion" thing sounds and looks awhole lot like ASCII Neverwinter Nights.
When i saw "hit die" i almost shuddered. At least it seems there is mana, no need to sleep to remember spells, i suppose ?

Well, both Incursion and Neverwinter Nights are based on the D20 system, so I imagine there will be a lot of similarity between the two.

Hi there, first thanks Slash for talking about lands of Elderlore. Roguetemple seems very promising, so congratulations to you !  :)

If you want to launch windows binary release of elderlore, you need some python files here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=184938

Unzip python24.zip on the root of your system drive (you should have c:\python24\...) and launch elderlore.exe.

This release is not yet playable, it only shows how the world engine renders stuff.

I third the proposal.

There is no release date at the moment. You can become a playtester, however. More info in the Incursion homepage:

There is a error.log file in the data folder where you will find the error.

You need to unzip this python24.zip file, even if you have python 2.5 already, because it contains files used by the GUI of the game OcempGui (and those files places seem to be hard coded in OcempGui).

Ok, I got it to work. It's pretty interesting how you  have it base everything off the name. Is the chaos slider bar supposed to do anything? When making small worlds with the same name it was making them identical no matter what the chaos slider was set to.
