SilverQuest - the online Roguelike

Hello everyone.
My name is Wolfgang Wozniak (Ouren). I'd like to introduce this game, inspired by Rogue, and more recently, Dwarf Fortress.

SilverQuest was born around September 2008. The project was conceived as a weekend project to see if we could make a competent game over the course of 24 hours. With my then development partner Jessica M. Vázquez Rodríguez (Arwym) we created something that became very popular in that development community. The original game server ran from September to October 2008, but had to be taken down due to the fact I was moving away to go to college in Florida for traditional design training. (Print, web, motion, logos, type, etc..)

When I finally got sort of settled in, and we brought the server back online and updated the client, two months had gone by. The development community had lost interest by then, and the game was dead in the water. I continued to support SilverQuest over the next 20 months by adding new features and keeping the server online all day and night. Getting developers who are using similar tools to make the same sorts of games to play other people's games was almost impossible.

Recently I've had to move the server to a less reliable host as the cost to personally run a computer and taking a huge loss every month was simply not cost effective, especially when no one was there to appreciate the work.

SilverQuest has generally been regarded as the most artistically, atmospherically, and thematically original Mirage Source engine game. Every time I revisit the world I created two years ago, I learn something new about the beauty of imagination and minimalist retro game design. I've actually done a few studies as to why and how it was so successful, and it shows me new things every time I log in.

Let me take these next paragraphs to introduce you to the (modern) concept behind SilverQuest.
I don't usually explain the game to this depth, but I felt that similar competing games were such a different approach than the one I've taken with SilverQuest.

Art
The game's art and gameplay are designed to evoke a much similar time in video games and game design. With ASCII art composing the visual world, the game's actual environment is left to the player's imagination. This minimalist game art is what made games like Zork, Final Fantasy (NES), King's Bounty, and so many other retro games come to life in the player's mind. Without imagination or cultivating that creative process in the player's mind, art, film, and games would be nothing.
As video games and film special effects reach the uncanny valley where we cannot recreate nature to a physically correct degree, we lose the ability to place ourselves in the worlds the authors have created for us to explore. This is why the original Star Wars (for example) films hold up now and even 20 years from now, better than the more recent works that are done using computer graphics.

Sound
Enough about the visuals!
The music in the game is all licensed under Creative Commons and is used legally (in case you all are wondering).
The musical choices for each area evoke as someone said to me once. The music is "both familiar, yet distant. It reminds me of different times, and brings back other worlds for me..."
A mixture of 6bit, 8bit, Modern Chiptunes, Classical, Foreign, World, Tribal, and Ambient is what enables people to be immersed in this other reality and lets them look through their screen as a window to another place and time.

Gameplay
Let's talk about the gameplay for a moment as well.
The game is designed around working as a team to take on even the most challenging of dungeons and foes.
There are three distinct classes, each of which are based on the three major stats in the game.
Red Warrior is based on Hit Points and Strength. This is the front-lines class.
The Blue Wizard is based on Magic Points and casting spells. This is the most diverse class.
And lastly, the Green Thief is based on Speed and uses mostly ranged weapons. This class is hard to catch and if played right, will have more victories than defeats.

Foes are powerful, and it's dangerous to go alone. Take your friends.

SilverQuest is a game about working as a team where levels don't matter as much as having allies.

Imagination and allies are what you need to conquer SilverQuest.
Maybe even a little gaul.

Welcome to the Rogue Temple Ouren---always nice to see newcomers, especially those bringing substantial looking project form nowhere!   8)

Your client download link has some extra "http://" junk to it, the download page from the main site works properly though...just need to modify your link here.

I would be very interested in some gameplay demo videos, as would I to know the technology behind the development of this project.  What operating systems does it work on?  And so forth.   The Mirage Source Engine seems to have fallen on tough times?

http://www.miragesource.draignet.com/index.php?categoryid=1

I would also strongly encourage your making a page for the project on the Roguebasin so as to be visible to a greater number of prospective players:

Looking forward to more details, and best of luck developing the project further!

Thanks for the help. The Download link was fixed. :P

I used a Mirage Source derivative, so its not directly Mirage.
The client only runs in windows right now, but we are working hard on bringing it to other platforms.
We have an older gameplay video made by an icelandic fan, here is a link.

Thanks for all the help!
I hope you all enjoy, and I can get some feedback on the game.

edit: added RogueBasin page!

An attempt to run the client on my PC running Vista yields "Run-time error '339': Component 'MSWINSCK.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid". A quick Google search reveals that mswinsck.ocx is a file not included with Vista. If this is true, do you know where I can get it? I don't care to go downloading it from any old place for obvious reasons.

Looks like it might be fun, and I'm looking forward to playing.

yes, it is in the client folder, all you have to do is double click it.

if this does not work,
1.Locate the file using windows explorer or My Computer. Alternatively search for the filename.

2.Hold down the shift key and right click on the file. Then click 'Open With...' from the menu.

3.An 'Open With' dialog box should appear. Click the button 'Other...'.

4.Navigate to your windows\system32 directory and select the file 'RegSvr32.exe'. Do a file search for it if you have trouble locating the exact folder. On Windows 2000 it is typically located in c:\WINNT\System32. Click Open to select the file. Then click OK on the 'Open With' dialog.

5.You should see a message indicating the file was successfully registered. If you see an error message, try restarting your computer and going through the above process again.

Fenrir rolls his eyes.

Oh, thanks. Apologies. I'm not the most perceptive sort, as you can see.

I had trouble in Wine a long time ago when I tested it (this was like 2 years ago).
Hopefully you can resolve these issues (looks like you are already!) soon and will be able to play the game on some level.

Thanks,

The only real issue im seeing is that everything is Being Pushed downward, Look at it on the source end, re you using a Position or button Class from a Windows Library? That might be the issue... the Easiest fix(but most time consuming) would be to Write your own versions in order to reduce Dependency on Default windows librarys. Im guessing entirely but Its the only thing I can think of. also Is there a Key I can use to Close the Book? If I could manage that I could play

I am not actually the engine writer, this is a Mirage derivative, and I can't control button classes I'm afraid.
I also don't think there's a shortcut key to close a book.
Here's an idea, however.
Open your inventory, and right click to drop all your books, and then relog after you have dropped them.

The system will no longer be able to call that book, and you'll be able to play (mostly) unhindered.

This game looks very cool and original!
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

Sorry everyone, the server seems to be down at the moment, and I cannot reach my host.
It should be up by the end of the day.

:|

EDIT:
I apologize for the downtime. It figures that on the week I introduce this game to you all, the game goes down for a whole day.
I will repost this when the server is back up (this one post)

Thanks again,
Wolf
