Think about this. A text game just made tens of thousands for an update.
Sometimes the world makes me smile.

Thanks for putting it into these words. Interesting view. I never had thought about it from that angle. Now I'm gonna smile for the rest of the day, too ;-)

BTW, only $407 and Krys will be having several months of work ahead of himself working full time on an awesome tile set for ADOM. Not to mention improved audio and eventually tile support for ADOM II :-) Oh beautiful world, this is really going to be a lot of fun :-)

Cheers
Thomas

Dear ADOM community,

the ADOM crowd funding campaign (http://www.indiegogo.com/resurrect-adom-development) enters its final phase... and we also have defined the first stretch goals for the campaign.

The most important stretch goal for sure is TILE SUPPORT:

Darren Grey is to be credited for his idea of closely integrating NotEye (http://www.roguetemple.com/z/noteye.php) in ADOM and this really seems to be the perfect solution to get decent tile support in ADOM (much simpler than rewriting the engine). Thus my compatriots in the campaign (Jochen, Krys and Zeno) intensely discussed the possibilities during the past couple of days and we now believe to have found a way to do the integration with affordable costs.

We are planning a tiered approach:

- Step #1 is to integrate NotEye into ADOM to be able to support several tile resolutions (32x32 and 64x64 at least).

- Step #2 is to provide a custom designed tile set - simply because a tile set from one source is so much more beautiful than one collected from disparate artists and sources.

In combination both #1 and #2 offer both options: Use a community built tile set or use the custom designed tile set for ADOM. Naturally the third choice is to keep playing in ASCII mode - this option won't ever go away.

Another side benefit of step #2 is that ADOM II also would be able to use the tiles - basically your pledges finance two games in one stroke!

The next stretch goals then are concerned about new races, new classes and new quests to be added to the game but we'll talk more about that if we ever get close to that.

As the campaign slowly comes to an end (although we still have 17 more days) you now should decide if you ever dreamt of one of the features indicated above - if so and you haven't pledged yet it's now time to go and support the campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/147348/pledges/new

Regards
Thomas Biskup

P.S.: There are other reasons, too.

ADOM II would benefit from reaching the tile goals as this would allow me to add a great tile set to finally give ADOM II a tiled alternative to ASCII characters.

Right now also the final power pledge drive: Artifacts is running. For every $500 donated in total a new artifact will be added to the game. Plus 2 new items for every day in which we manage to collect $1.000!

And you right now have the one and only chance to become the owner of the "ADOM Lite RPG" - either for $40 as a signed and numbered RPG book or for $400 as the owner of a limited edition hand-made collectors box.

All details can be found at the campaign page - including a sample of the future tile set which IMHO has the potential to be the most beautiful tile set ever created for a roguelike game!

Classic Roguelikes / Crowd fund the resurrection of ADOM development
« on: July 02, 2012, 10:38:58 PM »
Hi everyone!

I'd like to direct your attention to a special moment in time: Today is the day where the future of ADOM once more might change:

   http://www.indiegogo.com/resurrect-adom-development

After extended discussions about the details, motives and goals of this campaign on my blog (http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com), Facebook and Reddit I today launched a crowd funding campaign to revive ADOM development. If you have questions concerning the campaign please read the various blog entries of the past four to five days - there you should find all the details.

If you ever loved ADOM or still love it and would like to see it shine in new splendor with bug fixes, patches, new boss monsters, new magical statues, executables for all current operating systems, etc. now is the time to participate in the Indiegogo campaign. With $10 you get into the "Tome of Donors" - a new artifact that will be introduced for ADOM 1.2.0, with $25 you get that plus access to all nightly builds and there are many more higher levels with interesing rewards and chances to be immortalized in the game.

The campaign so far as gathered about 11,78% of the funding goal in less than 1% of the campaign time - which just awesome beyond words. If we manage to keep up the momentum there might be a bright future looming ahead for ADOM.

Even if you don't feel like donating I'd be immensely indebted to you for helping to spread the link and the word in order make this the most succcessful roguelike funding campaign ever - and how might it be to put the big graphical titles to shame ;-) ?

To ease the way we already have a vast number of stretch goals prepared: from new PC races and classes to a heap of new corruptions, an even more exciting corruption system, ports to Android and iOS, an extendable scripting engine for user extensions and so much more. Now we just need to take the initial hurdle and then things really will get to rock and roll! All the new features and additions will be freely available for everyone.

For me personally this is a very exciting point as it might be a chance to improve ADOM to a quality level that it deserves. I care deeply for ADOM but failed once too many in delivering due to tight time restraints. A successful funding campaign can change that and thus a new future might arise for ADOM.

Note: This should not impede to much on ADOM II development as I  have gathered a team of fantastic people that will be going to help me in developing ADOM 1.2.0 so that the load is much better distributed. See the campaign page for more details.

Yours truly

Hi everyone!

Despite many reports of ADOM II 0.2.7 being extremely stable and bug free one more important (although very rare) issue has been found and prompted me to release ADOM II 0.2.8 so that my soul may rest in peace while I start developing ADOM II 0.3.0 ;-)

Here's the announcement:

Here you can find the downloads:

Enjoy and keep your axes high!

Hi everyone!

The endless quest for a full-featured version of ADOM II continues with the release of ADOM II 0.2.7. As usual you can find all the details and the download links in the release blog posting:

http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2012/05/adom-ii-027-has-been-released.html

The most important change (besides dozens of bug fixes) probably is that dynamic encounter level scaling has been removed.

Enjoy - I'm curious for feedback.

Hi everyone!

Setting a new world record for ADOM II I hereby announce the third release in a weekend: ADOM II 0.2.6 is out.

You can find all the details at

http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2012/05/adom-ii-026-released.html

and download ADOM II 0.2.6 here:

http://www.adom.de/adom-ii/downloads/javawebstart/index.php

I'm now running fully on "release early, release often" and try to fix bugs as soon as possible as well as adding gradual improvements. Hopefully the third release in this trilogy now fixes all the annoying bugs that skipped past quality control. I'm especially embarrassed about the huge amount of problems introduced by the new configurable keybindings (especially under Windows) but hopefully we are through this now.

Have fun and enjoy.

Hi everyone!

Sadly yesternights release of ADOM II 0.2.4 (http://roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=2336.0) contained a critical problem under Windows. Since I yesterday decided to take the risk of not testing under Windows I got what I deserved. I'm sorry for the broken release.

To remedy this I just released ADOM II 0.2.5. Yo can find the details at

http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2012/05/adom-ii-025-has-been-released.html

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

While still wrestling with "release early, release often" I just managed to release ADOM II 0.2.4 seconds ago. The new version includes the first major story arc (The King of the Orcs), adds corruptions back into the game, now has armies, sieges and other stuff and many many bug fixes. Read about the details on the blog at

http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2012/05/adom-ii-024-has-been-released.html

and enjoy the release at

Hi everyone!

After spending much too long on getting sidetracked I am happy and proud to announce the release of

ADOM II: Legends of Ancardia 0.2.3 (powered by JADE)

As the long title implies the game called JADE has been rebranded over the past couple of months, something that still is ongoing as new graphics are being created, etc.

ADOM II 0.2.3 is a pretty big release with sweeping changes. You can find all the details and the download links at the following URL:

   http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2012/03/adom-ii-023-released.html

From now on I'm trying to discipline myself to change to "release early, release often" for new release cycles between one and four weeks.

I'm looking forward for feedback!

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Re: JADE 0.2.2 released!
« on: November 26, 2011, 11:03:32 AM »
Immersion is a real important aspect of a game, and now there are 3 things that prevent this:
- java slowness
- the mouse pointer changing to a hourglass for a very little fraction of a second but after every move
- there's no way to toggle the constant toolbar above the screen.. it makes me feel less immersed than I was in Adom, where after hitting alt+enter I was all alone in that world

The speed issue is not really Java slowness... it was just "lots of unoptimized stuff happening in the background". The next release 0.2.3 has been optimized for speed and it now is blazingly fast... you will love that.

As for the mouse pointer and the toolbar above the screen... I'm looking into immersive UI updates for 0.2.3, too :-) That's the fine tuning a game needs to receive over time (so many things that could be done it's hard to choose the most important ones first).

Dear community,

I hereby (somewhat sadly) announce the release of

      JADE 0.2.2 at http://www.adom.de/jade/downloads/javawebstart/index.php

JADE 0.2.2 is the second bugfix release in the 0.2.x line and squashes especially one major bug I missed during yesterdays release (damn last minute changes).

If you are interested you can find the latest news as well as the download links for
JADE 0.2.1 and JADE 0.2.2 at the official website:

   http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2011/11/jade-022-has-been-released.html

Feedback is welcome in the forums and the project management tools (for bugs and requests
for enhancements) at

   http://www.adom.de/forums

Let me know what you tink, provide feedback and help to grow JADE far beyond ADOM (which
I would like to succeed with within the next nine months).

Dear community,

I hereby announce the release of

      JADE 0.2.1 at http://www.adom.de/jade/downloads/javawebstart/index.php

JADE 0.2.1 is the first bugfix release in the 0.2.x line and flattens many of the rough edges of the first real game release of JADE (0.2.0). I heartily recommend an upgrade to everyone!

If you are interested you can find the latest news as well as the download links for
JADE 0.2.1 at the official website:

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / JADE 0.2.0 has been released!
« on: November 06, 2011, 04:45:52 PM »
Dear community,

I hereby announce the release of

      JADE 0.2.0 at http://www.adom.de/jade/downloads/javawebstart/index.php

Although most might now it by now I'll repeat it here: JADE is the official successor to ADOM
(Ancient Domains Of Mystery, JADE meaning Java-based Ancient Domains Engine).

JADE 0.2.0 is a very important milestone in the development of the game as this release
marks the first "real game" release of JADE. Compared to ADOM a lot of content is still
missing (as well as professions, quests, etc.) but with JADE 0.2.0 you for the first
time can play to win the game.

Additionally JADE in many areas now passes ADOM by including completely new features that
would be very hard or impossible to do well in ADOM. The highlights of the 0.2.0 release
include:

* the availability of all the well-known ADOM PC races as well as being able to choose
to play fighters, tinkers, commoners and thieves
* multi-classing
* a construction and build system that allows manufacturing things
* vastly enhanced means of interaction with the environment
* more than hundred new items as well as more than two dozen new monsters
* more of everything including several minor story arc, one way to win the game and many
  other secret things

As JADE 0.2.0 has been a major upgrade (it bumps the lines of pure Java code from about
51.000 to 71.000) there probably will be a couple of rough edges but from now on I will
switch back to the "release early, release often" strategy with which I started.

If you are interested you can find the latest news as well as the download links for
JADE 0.2.0 at the official website:

   http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2011/11/jade-020-has-been-released.html
