Tactical squad-based space-marine rl, possibly initially for a 7drl.

And how would this me a roguelike?  Would there be random levels or what?

Also, as a rule, group roguelikes tend to not be very fun...there's too much to keep track of.

I'm really hoping to hit version 0.8 of my game by the end of this year.  By that time it will have the following:

(v0.1 was when I worked on the maps and all that; v0.2 began when the work done during 0.1 was completed)
v0.2 Maps and dungeon structure, LOS
v0.3 Items, inventory and equipment
v0.4 Monsters and melee combat       <- here right now
v0.5 Quests, complex NPC interaction
v0.6 Extensive skills and minor gameplay enhancements
v0.7 Town, special levels, and shops
v0.8 Spells, potions, scrolls, magical items

I was surprised to find that I didn't already link to Roguetemple.  I'll try to fit in your banner someplace.

are you waiting for qhack to be released or something? that seems odd.

Oh no, I'm just saying that since monsters were one of the first things TB did in QHack, it logically follows that it would be one of the first features to be added to JADE.  And if he's been working on JADE for nearly ten years (first design post was in '98, I kid you not) and is only JUST starting monsters, it means we'll probably waiting a while for a playable version of JADE.

(Hit e to eat? Nonsense! Open your inventory, go to some rations or something, and hit the spacebar).

Which theoretically works well, until you realize that e (eat), b (selection) is faster than i (inventory), scroll scroll scroll, space (use item).

Oh geez...

"In the meantime I work on the JADE code to currently implement the first fully functional monsters (including equipment, etc.)."

Wasn't monsters the VERY FIRST THING he implemented in Qhack? Something tells me we'll be waiting a while for JADE...

Programming / Re: Messing with dungeon generation
« on: January 09, 2008, 05:49:05 PM »
Why don't you try a totally different approach? I've some people using "non-standard" stuff, like cellular automata. You could try creating "abstract digger dwarves" with pseudo-personalities, and have them dig a dungeon through a series of iterations... I might try that when I have free time (somewhere in 2145).

My dungeon generator creates maps that looks like caves.  After all, why would a dungeon consist of rooms and halls? You're going into caves and the like; at any rate, nothing will look as neat as the dungeons in ADOM (which seems to be one of the "better" generators).

My process is described here:

Programming / Re: Worst bug you had?
« on: January 07, 2008, 11:28:15 PM »
This bug has existed for some time now so it's not obvious that it's a result of recent changes.

I suppose you've figured this out by now, but it is CRUCIAL to fix random crashes immediately.  It saves so much time, since you have a fairly good idea of what might've caused the crash.

David Gervais has made some 32x32 and 54x54 tiles for Angband, and to my knowledge, they're free to use (provided you ask him first).  Details are here:

Of course, but that means ADOM is dead.  ADOM was the game that really got me hooked, it is a sad day indeed to know it will never be given new life.

JADE is the new life that you're talking about.  It's ADOM 2; basically an expanded and improved version of ADOM.  It will lose none of what made ADOM good (as might happen with open-source remakes) and well and many new features from the same person who made ADOM fun.  Believe me, you're not missing out because ADOM is closed source.

ADOM is dead, let the open source community ressurect it.
I mean look what it has done for Linley's crawl.

ADOM is dead, long live ADOM!

Maybe he wants it to stay dead.  If I wrote a successful roguelike, at some point I'd say, "I'm done; it's time to move on."  That game would be solely my work, and I wouldn't want anyone to alter the vision I had for it.

I think he wants people to accept that ADOM is a finished game, and they should look for new features only in JADE.

Not really on topic, but why is it so hard for newcomers to spell "rogue"?

Gearhead is a pretty good sci-fi roguelike.

multi view modes. (planned to be the first OS with a way to set up the OS as a 3d firstperson OS (for diehard gamers but takes a high system requirement)

Ok, there's cool, and then there's practical.  Eventually practicality will win.  Sure, the first time or two it might be fun running through halls (directory trees I assume) to access your files, but eventually it will just be needless memory usage for something that can be accomplished by clicking the mouse two or three times.

However the source code for JADE has just been released and is a awsome game once you know how to build it. I am already up to level 15.

O_O Tell me more...
