Hi

I used to play the dos version, because it looked so much nicer in console.
Now that they aren't doing any new dos versions, I played tiles for a while, but I miss the simple console style.

Now I have already found out how to get it to display in 80x25, but the colours are still hideous.

I know that frozen depths (win version) has the ugly colours too, unless you use the special shortcut that is provided, wich turns it into those other "nice" colours.

Is there any way I can get these colours to work in crawl too? I tried just usen the FD shortcut for crawl, but no success.

Will it run in fullscreen?

I have been playing crawl for about a year, mostly melee chars, or ranged/dextrous ones... just recently trying to get into the magic realm.

Still, I read stuff on that newsgroup and think "Wow, is that guy playing the same game as I am ?"

So much to explore, so much ways to play it, so much to learn. That's what makes crawl so great.

And, even if you use the same combo, no game will ever be the same. Also no death really makes you hate the game. Most of the time dying manages to make you smile, or facepalm. :P Or both.

Oh, those orc priests, beware!

They are nasty, and must be taken out as soon as possible.
Also, that glowing orcish war axe of the orc warrior was probably dealing more damage than you expected.

I died lots of deaths in crawl like this too (and still do occasionally). Crawl punishes thoughtless play asap :)

Those screenshots look very nice from an aesthetic point of view. I hope it will be playable full-screen ? (the "maximize button is greyed out)..

I must admit I hate not being able to play fullscreen :P

Anyhow, I will watch and hopefully try it out some day :D

I just tried running the .exe, but it says (rough translation):

"The application didn´t initialize correctly (0xc0000135)"

I´m on winxp.

I gave it a quick look.
I like what I see, the way you set up the screen is nice.
The only thing I find aesthetically unpleasant is the message box on top - you should complete the frame (top line).. The blue backround is pretty aggressive imho, and doesn´t fit well to the green in the stats stuff. Why not simply have it black?
Also, I would personally have the message box on the lower end of the screen, and stats/playing field on top.

Anyhow, good luck with this, and thank you for going ascii instead of some silly looking tiles :D (just my personal opinion here).
Looking forward to future developement!

I was just watching a documentary about the inkas. I have always been fascinated by those cultures. I think such a theme might be cool for a rouguelike - or is there already one? :)

Actually, when you turn a skill "on" (+) it will mean that the unallocated experience will go into it the next time you use it.
Skills that are off will still gain experience, but only by direct usage, and to a smaller extend, it will not use the "pool".

***mild spoiler warning***

If you have allocated a lot of experience, you can direct it onto certain skills, for example cast around at walls, or let yourself get hit by a rat (for shield). It´s called victory dancing and is regarded as scumming by some.

On a personal note, I find it is ok, crawl is hard enough as it is. It only works on some actions, for most skills you still must actively pursue fighting or other dangers to channel your experience.

Edit:

I have a question on my own behalf though. I have a dwarf fighter, str 22 int 15 dex 10 (ring of +5 int) ... he recently learned spellcasting and evocations.

I can´t seem to memorize any spell though :( I have books... do I need to get higher in spellcasting ? Even with level 1 spells I get "very hard to learn" - do I need specific earth or fire books?

^^ edit: I know now, thick armour and spellcasting won´t work. The char died by now, blasted by an elven wizard. Still my best so far :)

I tried it in far, and it does start it with the proper font and spacing :)
Will be handy for other roguelikes... I hate when they run in that small font and only use 1/3 of the screen---

I know what you mean, but this doesn´t seem to give me the cosole-style font really..

Anyhow, 0.3.3 is just out today and they fixed the colour bleeding in dos :) So my problem is gone, thanks anyhow, Z.

Classic Roguelikes / crawl viewport problem...

Hello,
I was wondering how I can manage to run the windows version but making it look like the dos version? The windows version has such small size on the screen and the colours are ugly (fullscreen) :(

I tried around with setting stuff in a shortcut´s options, but it didn´t get me anywhere.

# view_max_width   = 33
# view_max_height  = 17

^^ I found these in the init file, but I have no idea what to use, and if it´s the right thing at all.

The problem is that the current dos version 0.32 has that annoying bug with the backround colours flushing the screen sometimes...

Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated!
