Classic Roguelikes / Re: Vote for your favourite Major roguelike ;)
« on: June 11, 2007, 09:04:40 AM »
ADoM for me, i am an active CRAWL hater, i mean, every game is pretty much the same, there is very little variety, ugly dungeon generator, classes are meaningless, and the amount of key presses needed to kill one bat...and there are way many bats. Okay, bats are hard to hit, i get it already,  just die now, arrrgh ! The only good thing in CRAWL is auto-explore, very comfy. Why so many lemmings...i mean people spam about CRAWL everywhere they can all day long is beyond my understanding.

The low replayability compared to roguelikes is another problem.
Dunno about that, i cant count all the times i played Wiz8, for example...

You cannot really play your own CRPG, because you know every inch of the world, what will happen if you do this or that.. totally kills the enjoyment for me.
You never know what might turn up. Classical example is invention of rocket jump by players, back in Quake1, id guys had no idea it was possible.
On another note, there is Kornel, who says he never actually finished DooMRL, and some effects he didnt expect turned up.

1 - flat world, ie, the overlandmap etc contains the towns, rather than you walking onto 1 tile, which explodes into a town map?
I dont know why people love that so much, its really a pain in any RPG, having to check all those houses. Well, i guess it depends on your focus, maybe there is a game somewhere the whole point of which is going from one house to another, lol.
Personally, i prefer how it was done in Darklands, town is represented by a menu system, you quickly find and do what you had to do in a town, and go about your adventuring business elsewhere. Efficient, very much so, and not really detrimental to the game atmosphere.

Well, maybe they've got a point. Just because major magazines/websites want it - doesn't make it automagically a bad thing Wink
Basically - it does. Nowadays multiplayer is just a marketing point, simple as that. Devs add multiplayer not because it will be interesting for THIS game, but because the sales will be lower without it.

If you ask me - there's enough of that sort in the mainstream gaming.

Look at each and every magazine/website review these days, they all scream "ZOMG, there is no multiplayer in this game, therefore it sucks major ass !"

The links in the news must be more accented. I know they are there, but every time it takes a bit of pixel hunting and mouse hovering till i find them.

Early Dev / Re: Incursion Comp.

Its a pretty reasonable guess, that if the author wanted to host the game somewhere - he would do it already.

Sounds exactly like a bunch of minigames, throwing bling-blings at you at every corner...

The exciting thing about it is that all the stuff you encounter out there is from other players
Meaning i will need to have my net connection on at all times.

I bet my ass that Dwarf Fortress is more complex and consistent.

Sorry, i just really hate Maxis.

I dont follow all those new games for those who can afford to upgrade once-a-year, so enlighten me : is it more than just a bunch of minigames ?

Nothing good ever came out of Maxis, and i pray that it stays that way.  :P

This "Incursion" thing sounds and looks awhole lot like ASCII Neverwinter Nights.
When i saw "hit die" i almost shuddered. At least it seems there is mana, no need to sleep to remember spells, i suppose ?
