Spore
« on: May 15, 2007, 08:51:06 PM »
So, the obligatory spore topic(every board should have one ;) ). I remember when I saw the youtube video when it first started to get lots of attention. Not much more has been released about it since then and its release date has been pushed back again :(. I'm still very excited about it, though I don't know if my computer could really handle it. Also I hear that the underwater part of the game(where you play a fish type creature) may be scrapped.

I wonder if its possible to make a sentient plant race that trades thoughts via pollen?

I dont follow all those new games for those who can afford to upgrade once-a-year, so enlighten me : is it more than just a bunch of minigames ?

Nothing good ever came out of Maxis, and i pray that it stays that way.  :P

Well, heres the concept;
 You start off with a single celled organism doing a pac-man type game(eat smaller stuff avoid bigger stuff) evolving different parts as you go, like little hairs to make you go faster, bigger mouth, etc.. and then you eventually become a more complex creature evolving up till your a fish type thing.
    At this point(or perhaps earlier not too sure when this really kicks in) you can start designing your body parts to look however they want as many fins, teeth, flippers, as you want wherever you want them and they use procedural generation to figure out the movement animations for that body. You continue to try to survive and to evolve you breed yourself and lay an egg, give birth, divide, or whatnot and then you eventually gain sentience at which point you gain a tribe of your little dudes that you have evolved.
    They go about their business and you influence their development at that point by giving them say a spear to make them more warlike or a musical instrument to make them more creative, and you continue doing this till they get to a certain level of intelligence at which point you start a simcity/age of empires type game.
    Here you start building big cities, researching, and that good stuff and start trying to take control of the planet. And then you start building space craft and exploring the solar system and galaxy terraforming and conquering worlds, breeding new species.

The exciting thing about it is that all the stuff you encounter out there is from other players, it seeds your universe with player created content, and procedurally generates everything(which makes stuff small enough to do all this seeding.)

In a nutshell thats what spore is supposed to be like.

Sounds exactly like a bunch of minigames, throwing bling-blings at you at every corner...

Meaning i will need to have my net connection on at all times.

I bet my ass that Dwarf Fortress is more complex and consistent.

Sorry, i just really hate Maxis.

And you'd probably win it :P

Dwarf Fortress, even now being a beta is a very complex and cool game. When version 1.0 is finally released I guess it will be the "game of games" if all planned features are going to be on.

Spore sounds pretty fun, though. I'll probably check for the game once it's out. And the possibility to share creations with other players sounds pretty neat!

spore = simearth + simant + simcity + elite.

Ill be exicted when its released, patched several times for balance issues and maybe then only after a year or more from release.

it may not just be the best game ever as many people are making it out to be before its even released.

It definitely won't be the best game ever. And if all the stuff from the dev_single page goes in then dwarf fortress really will be the ultimate game for reals.

But I do think spore will be pretty cool and I want to play the part where you get to design your species more than the rest(I already know how to rule the game and its not out. It's revolves around not giving your creature sentience till you have made them amazing in every other way as much as possible.)

Most games(commercial anyways) assume this now anyways, and thats only going to increase as time goes on. I mean every time a game is released with the expectation that it will get patches is them expecting you to have a connection to the net.
