Other Announcements / Re: Roguelike Radio podcast
« on: August 01, 2020, 03:34:42 PM »
I just want to comment on that magic episode that scrolls and other items with "loaded" magic were invented for character classes that are less gifted in magic. I think you were wondering why there are scrolls, so that's why. It was so funny when you were trying to figure it out that I was both irritated and laughing out loud at the same time. But I look at these podcasts as something fun to listen to, not a source of knowledge about roguelike games. Well, sometimes some guests know what they are talking about.

There must be actual places where you can hire a programmer (idk if there is a subreddit for that?), I just don't know anything about it. Most of us are creating roguelikes as a hobby and if you would make a commercial one, just do it yourself. Roguelites are quite easy to do anyway, even if you don't know much about programming. It's a small obstacle to hop over if you are a good game designer.

Programming / Re: My language

I've been reading "Beginning COBOL for Programmers" by Michael Coughlan. It's not a language I would use, but it's an interesting look at programming before the invention of function (which COBOL doesn't have (well, user defined functions, it does have some wacky internal ones)). Also, I've began to code with python and I think it's a nice language, although probably slow when it's not a compiled language. I'm leaning more to the idea that creating a better (whatever it is) language would not be a solution to some basic problems in game development at least, because it's much more design than programming. It's just something that you think about when working with crude languages of today.

Reddit, I guess? Everyone there seems to concentrate on creating commercial roguelites anyway, so.

This is the way switch-case would work.

Code: [Select]
switch i
case 0
print "case 0"
case 1
if x is 5
break
print "case 1"
cases 2 ... 8
//range version
default
//default case

Each case would have automatic break (even empty ones, or possible empty cases would be illegal), but you could group them with a range.

Still working on this one. I think in the end I have to figure out ALL of the data this game has and somehow rearrange it in better way. Or at least in the way I can write a new save/load routine, because it's going to be a tough one. Function pointers are still a problem, because they can't be ported to C++ without strict function signatures. But I'm getting a better idea where and how they are used. In options it's quite easy, the list of options simply have bool, int or string values with function pointers to get and set them. That whole thing can be replaced with a class that's holding options. In the current implementation options in the list are pointers to global data, well, because everything is global in this project.

But your socialist State can only last for so long if activity is frozen.

It's not. And we'll have to wait and see what actually happens. I really hope this makes us think about local production rather than trying to make everything in China or far east. It would bring back more jobs and create better economy.

Stocks are there just for rich people to make money from nothing. Maybe we should think about not having stocks at all. Just real life economy based on actual reality. Some people are already in panic about economy, but why? Most people still have jobs, or if they lose their jobs they can get new ones. Jobs don't just disappear, they will be there. Some people will also have more money, not less, because they don't spend it to vacations and other stuff like that. And, even this is terrible thing to say, in theory there will be more open jobs, because people will die.

Classic Roguelikes / Re: Angband variants table

Maybe because vanilla angband is so famous yet incredibly boring and unfun that everyone can easily have a go and improve

I think it has to do something with compiling, because afaik Nethack is notoriously difficult to compile. Or at least you can't just load it to an IDE, maybe that's the issue. Should take a look at Angband's source code sometimes.

I think we are planning to close the border in north between Finland and Sweden, because swedes have not really taken this seriously yet and there are infected swedes crossing the border. We have an open border situation with Sweden (in north), everyone just travels between Finland and Sweden for whatever reason. The way Sweden is handling this is.. weird. But it's what they are anyway, swedes have big problems in their politics, society etc. which is going to explode in the future.

Nice! I guess Angband is easy to compile, that's why there are so many variants?

Even now when everything isn't over yet it's obvious that the whole world should have taken action way before some countries did, because it is possible to slow down and cut infection chains before they get anywhere. I'm sure this has to change in a way that when something like this hits it's possible to stop things like tourism right at that moment.

Welfare for all at Western levels is not sustainable in most of the world.

What do you mean by "most"? And why isn't it. I think "western" is misleading, because it's more about politics of how to protect your own people. We have seen different ways how to approach this problem, some of them have been much better than others. Also, it's becoming very clear that in those countries who didn't care this virus is going to hit hard.

Try losing your job for 5 months in certain places.

I've been unemployed since last summer and in five months or so I didn't even get any money, because we had something called "active model", don't ask. But I like money so I have saved it and began to spend it more wisely. Well, also in Finland no one really dies if they don't have job or money, that's why we have that heavy tax rate. I think it's similar in many european countries. USA is different, because people can get kicked out from their job and their homes just like that. It's so uncivilized and crude. Maybe this will wake up people to improve their life by changing the way their society works.

They say that in countries with problems in the way society works those problems will become more visible. I guess USA is one of those countries. It's almost interesting to see what happens, although I'm kind of full of this situation already. There is too much panic, and restrictions should have been applied earlier, in many places it's too late already.

In many countries jobs will be there waiting for people to return, so in that sense I think the economy panic is hot air.
