The first roguelike I have been playing. It has a really strange balance, if you know the tricks you can become insanely powerful quite easily. But the part of the game in which you are still collecting the XP and required items is very good (probably everything is good if you don't know them or you just like being so powerful). Very nicely done non-dungeon locations, like the village, the forest, and the Slaeter's Sea.

Ragnarok is all about discovery. It's full of mysterious items and locations that all have their own special rules. The majority of the game's enemies have special abilities and traits beyond simply dealing damage. Most items have some kind of hidden function as well, so even the ones that look useless are good for something.
There are a few methods of becoming very powerful in a short amount of time, and most of them are based on player knowledge rather than rare drops or grinding. This is both Ragnarok's strength and its weakness - the crazy possibilities are a lot of fun, but an experienced player will only be seriously challenged by the first few areas, before they can put their exploits together.
Ragnarok has a few other traits that make it stand out. Magic is about trickery and deception rather than shooting fireballs. Combat is very aggressive and deadly, even high level battles are usually decided in a few strikes. Its main quest takes the form of a to-do list, and it isn't necessary to complete every single task to win. It also has a huge number of hidden areas that are not necessary to complete the game, but are worth visiting anyway.
Overall it's a really cool game. Play it!
