I used to play this a lot, this was the first roguelike I ever played, even before knowing they were called roguelikes

The current version of ADOM contains some nasty bugs, which could turn the newbies off (for example, it has the so-called "uberjackal effect" which causes summoned monsters like jackals and spiders to get extremely tough unless some unnatural tactics are employed). I think ADOM really needs these bugs to be fixed (should not be hard to do), and then it would be a great game, and Thomas Biskup could safely go on to working on JADE.

This was also my first truly gripping roguelike experience. I may have even tried it before finding Rogue. I've never beaten it or come close, but I've definitely played dozens of characters and pull it out for nostalgia's sake.
My main reason for not progressing further is the complexity. I don't have often hours to grind away in a RL, so I'll pick up a quicker game like Brogue in between tasks or to fill other dead time.

I have put more hours into ADOM than all other games combined, and then some. It's a truly amazing roguelike, and whilst it may not be perfect it sure is one heck of a lot of fun, even after you've won it plenty of times.

ADOM is the Godfather: Part 2 of roguelikes. Kind of inscrutible, clearly awesome. Great game.
