You know, more information about the game and links etc would be much more beneficial for anyone reading this thread.  I am not going to Google anything unless I have a reason.
Cheers.

Um, I would think the title would be sufficient for anyone to determine whether they've played it or not.

Okay, got sum linkies:

The Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etrian_Odyssey_2

The official site:
http://www.atlus.com/etrian2/

The bestest fansite evar:
http://www.intothelabyrinth.net/

The lattermost was where I found the EOII manual. Very useful, 'cause my copy didn't come with one. Or a case. Damn, I can't believe I paid thirteen dollars through my dad who takes all of my government check. It was worth it tho.

What I really meant was "Has anyone played  Etrian Odyssey II, it is a role-playing game for the Nintendo DS?"

Sorry for sounding snobbish :P

It's actually more a dungeon crawler with randomly generated dungeons (or so I heard).

What I really hate about that game is that you have to draw the maps yourself, it doesn't work automatically.

Aye, though the dungeons are not randomly generated.  Their aim was to appeal to the crowd from a ways back that loved to make their own detailed little maps per dungeon floor---and to this end the stylus and system for it works pretty well.  The third game in the series which introduces sea charting as well to the mix just recently came out in Japan and will probably also see a US release some months down the line.

Brian, due to my inadequate English skills I once again fail to fully understand your language. I suppose the developers of that game wanted to appeal to the crowd by having non-random dungeons? But "from a ways back"?  Can the users create their own dungeons? :-/

Ah, a better way to phrase it would be the older demographic---like those that grew up on Might & Magic/Bard's Tale/Wizardry(Mainly Wizardry as the biggest influence due to the series/franchise actually somewhat thriving in Japan while it died a slow and unfortunate death here in the states) games and other such "blob" crawlers.

In other words:  Each dungeon floor is designed to be a set piece---complete with themes relevant to the storyline, introduction of new mechanics, and so forth.  The players are then well served, sometimes for specific quests, to accurately map out said dungeons for hazards, puzzles, and general layout.

http://www.youtube.com/user/McGammar#p/c/0E3B79A9F33B0A33  Here's an informative and well done Let's Play walkthrough of the first Etrian Odyssey game which should communicate the gist of the series rather nicely---eventually he will probably play through Etrian Odyssey II as well.

Also, another aim was to appeal to the younger generations that missed the days when such dungeon crawlers were common with a fresh setting/franchise----this and the PSP game(s) Class of Heroes were aimed at those ends.  The Dark Spire, another DS game along similar lines, with FANTASTIC music, aims overtly at the oldest gamers of all with a Dungeons & Dragons 1stor 2nd Edition styled ruleset for the game's framework.

I stand corrected.

The best dungeon crawler of this type will be Shining in the Darkness in my heart forever.

I just got Etrian Odyssey on Saturday. I'm on floor 7. It's more unfair than EOII, I can't store items at the inn, and the font hurts my eyes, but it's still a very choice game.

I'm on floor 22 in EOII.

Ooh, let us (me) post our parties:

EOII: Satoru the Ronin, JD the Landsknecht, Nei the Dark Hunter
Leighton the Medic, Odin the Gunner

EO: Rudy the Survivalist, JD the Landsknecht, Elmer the Dark Hunter
Florence the Medic, Marie the Alchemist

Hey guys, I replaced Elmer the Dark Hunter with Sayoko the Ronin. She's been kinda weak since she had to catch up levels, but I just unlocked an awesome ATK +149 sword for her using materials I found on Floor 16, so she should be fine. Ooh, I should tell you about the rest of my guild members, whom I rarely use:

EOII: Guild JDguild: Red Bull the Survivalist, Trojan the Protector, Muse the Troubadour, Radon the Alchemist, Bestie the Beast, Latina the War Magus, Birch the Hexer

EO: Guild Amigas: Bieber the Troubadour, Elektra the Protector

Hey, why isn't Fenrir in this topic? He does realize he's a boss in Etrian Odyssey, right? That prolly isn't where he got the name, but still.

This is a joke, is it?

Fenrir is from the northern sagas I believe. The Edda mentions him:

Hey, if he's as good with the monsters as he is with the (pre-pubescent) ladies, then, um, he's good with the monsters. I might try him out in my party later. :-P

I unlocked the final class in EO, Hexer, and created one named Vendetta. I just made it to floor 22. Lemme see, I made it to floor 22 in EOII in 27 days, and I made it to Floor 22 in EO in 5 days. I think I know which one I like better. EO definitely has the edge in story, even though the story didn't even start until Floor 16, 'cause as of floor 22 in EOII, the story still hasn't started yet.
