why are you still here?
« on: October 22, 2009, 09:16:38 PM »
In many communities a survey of people active five years ago will turn up maybe one or two that are still around.
Yet when I read the old roguelike usenet postings I recognize the majority of the poster's names.

What factors have kept you from leaving?

Where some people like fps games and some people like rts games and so on and so on, I like Roguelike games.

The online resources and community for roguelike games is not large, and is centralized unlike other communities. Its likely that fps nuts have been fps nuts for just as long, its just that they have 1000 other forums and places to exist over time.

Not only that, but the RL player community has close ties to the RL development communitiy, and mostly it seems as though they are one and the same. This means that the main reason I personally started lurking in RGRD around 2004 was that it fulfilled both my programming and gaming interest in one, and it still does :)

While I'm usually biased to more graphical display, around roguelikes there are many people who are interested in game mechanics, and this is also a big interest of mine.

They're free and they're great.  What more can you ask for.  :)

I'm honestly and deeply interested in random dungeon generation, maze generation and randomly generated games. I've left and reentered the community at various points, but through all that my love for randomly generated games keeps bringing me back. That, and it's a wonderful community. Very close knit, nice, easy to get into, and it doesn't change much over time.
