Heh, thank you if you are refenring to me but its technicly not a win. I just cleared everything but didn't pick up the orb or took any runes. I made this char to do something more than that but it didn't work out so I just got out.

Ohhh many nice scores and some new contributions too, cool! =) Dedastary, you want your score up too? If you are this 1337zor, Crawlzor, ninja-RL player I'd actually prefer to keep the highscore list for those of us that haven't beat Crawl, before this post was created anyway. It's just because I've seen lots of highscore boards for all kinds of RLs different places on the net, and for Crawl Stone Soup for example, the best players make these great runs so frequent I don't even understand how it's possible! xD Just lemme know. Either way, the advice and postings are great help.

No, I just wanted to share some tips and I have beaten the game so its not really my place to be on the list ;D But thanks for asking. I'm no pro or anything and I really get lost in tty interface, I tryed to play on arcassiac but I got so used to tiles that I gave up after couple of trys. Anyhow, its nice to see other people play and write about it here. This game is soo underesimated, I wish more people gave it a serious try. I tryed to hook some friends but no luck, they just see the way game looks and thats it. If what I wrote here so far and the video I posted was a bit too much of a spoiler than I really apologize.

Dedastary: I don't think this thread have any proper warnings anywhere (my apologies for that), but it's been spoily throughout the entire thread. I don't mind spoily information, and haven't seen anyone else complain about it either here so I think it's all good! :) I personally appreciate all advice.

Nice char rz.berry! But you collected zero runes? (Or am I just not seeing them?) That would've boosted that char's score ALOT if you really got that score without any runes =)

Oh btw, I have a question about Monks. They are ofcourse specialists in UC. But what does this MEAN? Does it mean UC gets so powerful melee-wise that I should NEVER use any weapons?

Pretty much, Omni. A couple of races lend themselves particularly well to unarmed combat (trolls and ghouls), while transmuters spend so much of their morphed time unarmed as to argue in favor of unarmed-ness as a focus. There are no special kung-fu bonuses or behavior penalties as a monk; you can wear plate and cannot catch bullets.

edit: also, if you've ever had horns or a tail, UC governs those attacks. A high UC skill gives you a chance to receive a free auxiliary attack, even if you're wielding a melee weapon while fighting. Generally, people who smash things owe it to themselves to pursue an associate's degree in UC.

I had the Decaying and Serpentine runes, but they were in my stash. I'm not sure if they count towards the number of items you can carry, so I stashed 'em as I was having space issues.

Vanguard, a lot of that is dependent on your racial aptitudes. A Mountain Dwarf will be much better with an axe than his fists. Merfolk have insane aptitudes with polearms. Trolls and ghouls come with fre-fab claws, which make for excellent UC. Kenku are great with all weapons, but they have a beak and clawed feet, allowing for more powerful and more frequent auxiliary unarmed attacks (a higher chance at receiving additional UC combo attacks when you attack normally - with or without a weapon equipped), which might argue in favor of a balanced approach. Minotaurs, Draconians, most Demonspawn, and probably a few others I'm forgetting all have this benefit.

To my mind, the main trade-off when you go with UC is that you are resigning yourself to an empty weapon slot for the most part. One of the main secrets to winning in the mid to late game is building up a robust set of elemental resistances through the abilities of the random artifacts you'll find throughout. You'd be surprised at the difference in difficulty between a storm dragon when you have rElec and when you don't. Of course, you could do worse than an empty weapon slot; ogres, draconians, and others have to forfeit the greater part of their slots because of their physiology. Regardless, that's what I see as the main penalty. That said, you could make your way through half the game using your fists, come across a simply amazing randart, and adjust accordingly-- the fact of auxiliary unarmed attacks means that your skill points won't have been wasted.

If we're talking raw damage, my gut says that the heaviest of weapons (2 handed axes and maces) will out-perform a high UC skill in the hands of heavy hitters, but that the added speed of unarmed combat and the potential for auxiliary attacks compensates for this somewhat. Plus, kung-fu is awesome.

I should add that (IIRC) wearing a shield imposes some additional penalties on UC - mostly slowing you down a little further and culling the probability of auxiliary attacks.

And while I'm at it, I'll mention one further thing. I've noticed on a lot of the YASD posts that the characters are wielding weapons on the lighter side. While stabby types will want to make excellent use of that short blades skill, most other fighters will probably want to move into the heavier end of things as the game progresses and your skill with the weapon type improves. The reason for this is that the base damage (of, say, a hammer) and its enchanted bonus (+7, +6) do not share not a linear relationship; Crawl is misleading in this respect. The base damage for a weapon counts a LOT MORE. Therefore, a heavier weapon, even one with lower enchanted stats, can do considerably more in the way of damage provided that your skill with the weapon is high, and since the outcome of a fight in Crawl can often take no more than 1-4 turns, you really want to be hitting those death yaks as hard as you can with your great runed mace.

I understand what you're saying. But we all know roguelikes is all about numbers and calculations, and to try and always make the best decition. I am currently playing a Kenku basher. Aptitude for U C is 80, Maces and Flails (which is the best weapon I currently got) is 75. I have now trained U C to level 5. Maces and Flails are 4. Should I now start using weapons? Or is it possible that without an artifact weapon of some sort, U C is actually the best attack?
