Simple Roguelikes
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:49:07 AM »
Hello, I'm a new user. I've been reading a few topics and decided to join because I have a few questions.

I'm looking for some really simple roguelikes in the vein of Doomrl and the other RL's kornel had developed. I recently tried playing Nethack and it has WAY too many keybindings to remember. I was utterly overwhelmed and confused. I want something that's perhaps a little bigger and more in-depth than Doomrl but just as simple.

Some other roguelikes I enjoy are all the mystery dungeon series and POWDER.

Thanks for any help!

Mine is probably the most simple one in history of roguelikes:

Also check out the thread I made, I basically asked about the same thing you did:

I would recommend Slashie's MetroidRL or CastlevaniaRL. MetroidRL is a bit simpler than CVRL though. Also, check out the list of coffee break roguelikes on the Roguebasin. That's a good list of simple roguelikes.

Now that you mention coffeebreak we of course also have this thread: http://www.roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=229.0

To self-advertise my RL, have a look at LambdaRogue (http://lambdarogue.net). I consider it to be simple, but complex enough ;)

Like many things in life, for me, the hardest, most complex roguelikes are the ones that give me the most satisfaction. The things that take the longest to get into, that take the longest to learn, they're the ones that reward you the most.

That's how I work, at least! I guess what I mean is - go ahead and play those roguelikes, but do give one of the more complex ones a serious go. It might just be worth it for you!
