angband speed running?
« on: April 27, 2014, 01:21:05 AM »
I recently kinged a high-elf rogue in about 540,000 game turns (I think this is the same as ticks, so this number is far more than the number of player turns). From what I understand, expert players often king in about 800,000 game turns (without making any conscious effort to go fast, I imagine). Unfortunately, angband's scoring system kind of sucks in that the number of game turns doesn't seem to have much impact. My other wins, which took over twice as many game turns, have much higher scores, since they got way more xp spending a considerable part of the endgame at xp level 50, vs. the rogue who kinged at level 48 (first speed ring, +11, at xp level 31 on dungeon level 76).

My questions are: Does anyone actually speed run angband? If so, what are good times (in number of game turns, say)?

I would look at the ladder, but it since score does not usefully correlate with speed in angband. Like, if I managed to king at xp level 38, my score would be even worse (wtf?).

[edit] okay, just checked out the ladder. Characters with 5 mil turns and 10 mil xp. Sad. (Extra lulz for the dude with 64mil turns.) Angband devs: devise a reasonable scoring system. I mean, come on.

You should perhaps raise this in the big QT rewrite thread over there---given it is pretty well taking a hammer to nigh unto everything to make it better and/or easier to change and add things in the future.

Maybe I should. Got a link?

As far as how to do scoring, it's a problem crawl has solved pretty well. Roughly, the answer wrt speed is divide by the number of turns.

Hm, tried registering, but the goofuses who set up the forum seem to think people who don't speak fake Tolkien languages need not apply.

Really makes me feel better about not caring whether their game gets better.

Hmm, not sure what the trouble was there as I don't recall anything esoteric way back when I visited over there---though I guess it might've changed at some point to combat spam...

Congrats on your win.

I think brogue and crawl are your only options if you want a halfway decent scoring system in a roguelike.

Yeah, I have to find time to get into crawl properly. Third Angband win in the last month, that one in about three days of playing in office hours. Needs some extended endgame or something. It's too easy. I mean, if you have the self control not to fight anything that could kill you and you're a disciplined detection spell spammer, you can dive to endgame depths at absurdly low character levels, scum basic equipment (i.e. speed rings which are super common past dlvl 75, most resistances don't even matter in current angband, this character won without even having pConf), pick things off until you get less basic equipment (e.g. slay evil mace of disruption/chaos blade/scythe of slicing, in this case Doomcaller), then go win.

Wow. I just checked it out and that is terrible. Who thought it would be a good idea to do that?

It's the classic "speak friend and enter".  Honestly when you said that it required people to know fake Tolkien languages I was at least 50% certain what it was. But you're right it is extremely exclusionary if you haven't read the book. (the answer is "mellon").

Yeah, I knew that at the time and tried a couple things like "friend" and maybe "mellon," don't remember. Didn't work at the time. Recently tried again and got it to work. I get it as a thematic spam defense, but come on.
