My first year: Find Yer Treasure! (7DRL 2014 - Success!)
« on: March 22, 2014, 11:58:50 AM »
This is my first 7DRL and I had a lot of fun making it. If you have any problems running it please post the issue here or on its bug tracker page listed under the games description.

I've decided to keep working on and polish up my entry, though I will keep a link up for the original 7DRL competition entry.

Hi Eponick, can you describe what the potions do? Except for the healing potion and the warp potion, which are pretty obvious.
Also, I could not figure out what the Levels give you. Do you get extra HP or extra speed?

Also, I wish there was a way to drop bad potions, becuase without that, the inventory gets filled with things like dumbing potions pretty quickly. I don't want to drink them, but I have to.

Basically everything goes towards the final score and that's what the game was supposed to be about. Fast paced roguelike action where you try to get the highest score possible. You can play through a round in less than 5 minutes after you get the hang of it.

The Aging Drink adds 50 turns to your total, while the youth drink removes 75.
The warp drink teleports you to a random spot on the map, predetermined at the beginning of the round. The Dumbing drink removes 2 levels (No other stats), while the EXP drink adds a level.
Vile Ale heals you for 3-13 HP, and the Strong Ale heals for 8-33, set at the beginning of the round.

Levels give you 100x points toward your total score at the end of the round.
Leveling up randomly adds 0-3 Attack each level, and 0-7 max HP.

The reasoning behind not being able to drop potions and having to use them was that you would have to choose what you wanted to use vs the possibility of getting a more valuable item. Maybe it was a silly idea, wouldn't be hard to add that feature for a future release though.

Technically speaking it is possible to get a score of over 110,000 in one round, though I have never personally gotten more than 21k.

Thanks for checking out my game, by the way! :)

Hmm, so you get value decisions like "is it worth drinking this dumbing potion so I can pick up a youth drink?" That could be interesting. Maybe I should play this again (I didn't really get it the first time).

Thanks for considering giving it another play. I thought about giving you the option to view an item list that displays each items worth, but I thought that would be over-explaining and would take away from the roguelike experience.

Version 1.2 will display tips at the end of each round, there is also a minor bug fix and you can use backspace while inputting your initials for the high score table.

Here is a list of tips, privilege to the 7DRL community:
  • Tossing Junky Crowns and Gold Bits is a safe way to free up space in your inventory without any negative effects.
  • Drinks are the least valuable items, but the negative effects may cost you. Its up to you to decide if its worth the risk.
  • Try not to focus too much on leveling, but remember that the snakes will get stronger as time progresses.
  • Snakes get stronger around every 250th turn. Remember this when deciding to use Aging/Youth drinks.
  • Modifiers on drinks are determined at the beginning of each round. If you use a Teleport Drink and don't end up drowning once, then they are safe to use again.

The new version will be uploaded shortly, and the input I recieve here will help shape the gold final version of the game.
Thanks for playing!

Now that I understand more about what's going on, I'm having a lot more fun. :)  I'm happy to try and figure out effective ways to play, I just wasn't getting the basic concepts before. I also realised that when I played it the first time, I didn't know how to use items! (My own fault for not reading the instructions carefully enough)

It's always great to hear someone is having fun playing a game you created. Heck, I even have fun playing it so it can't be too bad. :P

My review is in
Total Score: 2.5/3
Completeness 3/3: Works well, no big bugs.
Aesthetics 3/3: Likes nice, controls mostly make sense. Even though it's a 3 it's a low 3 because you have to use the mouse to use items but otherwise can entirely use the keyboard. Having two different sprite sets to choose from is a nice feature.
Fun 2/3: Quite a bit of fun, with a good coffee break time needed to win. Would be more fun if there were more enemies. This is a high 2.
Innovation 2/3: The item identification is nice and works well with the limited inventory and the survival theme. None of the parts are new, but the whole of it is unique.
Scope 2/3: A normal sized 7dRL
Roguelikeness 3/3: Very roguelike!

I am happy with my score and comments, especially considering its my first game jam of any sort. :)
