looking for an rl with much crafting
« on: February 22, 2014, 12:24:14 PM »
Hi there,

two months ago I discovered Cataclysm and it's become my fav game although at this point I need a diversion. So I'm looking for another roguelike that has the same or more depth than Cataclysm. Time setting or magic yes/no doesn't matter to me. It can also be a graphical game. And it should be free or lowpriced.

games I already tried: dwarf fortress, cataclysm, elona, dungeon crawl stone soup, project zomboid, neoscavenger

crafting and survival (hunting and foraging and such) mean the most to me...

Thanks!

UnReal World is a game that is almost entirely about crafting and survival. I've played it quite a bit, and while I enjoyed it, it's *extremely* realistic in terms of, say, the time investment required to build a log cabin (it's now free, I believe.)

Wayward also has a lot of crafting and is a bit more whimsical (free.)

Don't Starve is real time and leans more heavily toward the survival aspect versus long-term infrastructure (not free.)

Also, you probably haven't heard of this one because it's kind of under the radar, but there is a video game called minecraft that might be up your alley as well.

Dungeons of Dredmor has a pretty massive crafting system for all different types of items, and has extra enchantments that can be put on weapons and armor as well. It's traditional dungeon crawler though, the crafting is about creating equipment and combat items rather than foraging for survival.
It's not free, but it's only $5.

And its sequel, simply titled Possession

I second UnReal World. You can't really get more craft/survival than that game.

Thanks. I checked out Unreal World, I like it but it's not quite as complex as Cataclysm. Dungeons of Dredmor looks good too, I'm gonna buy it soon. Wayward seems alright but I'm a bit lost in it and it seems a little cartoonish. Thanks again for your recommendations.

More ideas anyone? Something as complex as Cataclysm and DF?

I'm not so sure that Unreal world is less complex than Cataclysm. The complexity's just less immediately obvious. And there's no badass vehicle construction mode.
Honestly though I think you're going to be pretty hard-pressed to find games as complex as Cataclysm, and I don't think there are any games as complex as DF.

this.

If you didn't find UnReal World to be complex enough, and Cataclysm not to your taste, you're probably going to need to make your own game to get what you're looking for.  Which is often how excellent games come into existence.

Crafting just isn't a big thing in roguelikes for the most part.  It creates a different sort of balance than making players rely on random drops.

Maybe you could try Mage Guild.
Very strong focus on "crafting", since you can combine everything with (mostly) everything (i.e. combine a potion of permanence with one of inversion and you get a potion of change; combine a potion of absorption with some troll remains and you get a potion of heal; etc.).
Obviously there isn't a list of possible recipes in-game.

PS: I've linked to its roguebasin page because the original website was overrun by spambots. Latest version should still be downloadable from there. If not, I've got it and can upload somewhere if needed.

Sil is a more traditional dungeon crawler rather than a survival game, but it has a smithing skill that you can use to create your own equipment.  It's also the best roguelike.
