Good Android roguelikes?
« on: February 08, 2014, 08:27:51 PM »
Recently got a cheap tablet for christmas. Been looking for good roguelikes for android.

Already Pixel Dungeon. So far it seems to be the only one. I also found a few ports of dcss and angband, but the interfaces for them are really screwy and a pain.

Cardinal Quest and Hell, the dungeon again run a bit slow on my tablet.

Just curious if there were any others I may have missed.

Pixel Dungeon is good. Not as major pc-roguelikes, but... it's cool.

Control is intuitive, graphic is very nice and smooth, the difficulty level is balanced. And, quite important, Pixel Dungeon is in active development.

Yeah, Pixel Dungeon is the best I have found so far, particularly because of the controls. Best controls I have found so far.

Also tried Delver. Unfortunately, I wasn't very fond of the controls.

I found one called Deadly Dungeons that is a kind of first person roguelike which is pretty fun. There is a permadeath option and the levels seem to be random. Maybe not randomly generated, but randomly ordered at least. Not totally sure though.

On the port side of things, there's a well implemented version of Brogue (BrogueX) but it comes with a small price tag which rubs a lot of people the wrong way (it's not ported by the developer, just with their permission, and the original of course is a free game). WazHack also has a brilliant port that runs perfectly on the highest settings on my Galaxy S3 while all but the lowest settings lagged my laptop! That's a paid app though.

If you like Desktop Dungeons style games then Dungeon Ascension is good, it controls well and looks nice (the latest graphical version anyway) but only the lite version is free with the full version carrying a modest price tag. Dungelot is a sort of cross between Desktop Dungeons and Minesweeper and I really enjoy it although I already get the impression it's going to have a shorter interest span than DD; very very nice sprite graphics and a small price tag. 'Ending' is more of a puzzle game than even Dungelot but it's at least a second cousin to roguelikes and is a very well put together game with a simple and satisfying graphical style for those who appreciate monochrome ASCII.

Overall it's still quite an untapped market (ironically) with Cardinal Quest and Pixel Dungeon being the only original, traditional roguelikes out there. I absolutely love the latter though and it seems to be updated every few weeks; best of all though, it's completely free and funnily enough is the one that most warrants paying for (there's a donation option if you want to give financial support).

If any Android devs are listening, a simple touchscreen friendly, visually appealling version of Rogue would be great for short play, the two ports that are currently available are awful. Of course, if you're porting Rogue you'll probably wind up making your own new game based on it and, well, that's what I'd like.

My suggestion would be WazHack. Although it's very graphical and take a side-on view it's still very much a roguelike, and it's implemented really well on the touch screen.

Ending and Hoplite are not to be missed.

Tried both of those. I couldn't really get into Ending. It plays more like a puzzle game. Hoplite is really good, but doesn't scratch that dungeon crawl itch. It plays more like a strategy board game than a dungeon crawl. Still good though.

This is an old topic, but I wanted to reply for those coming into this thread from search engines.

I just published a simple but fun and challenging roguelike on the Play Store:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roguegamestudios.crown

It began a few months ago as an exercise in teaching myself Java and Android programming, but it quickly took on a life of its own!

It's not free, but for $1.99 you'll get at least 15 hours of time killing enjoyment :)

Should any of you decide to give it a try, I'd love your feedback. This being my first app, I plan on making improvements to it over time while also developing a sequel that's more quest and story oriented.

Just wanted to post a few good ones I have found since my original post.

Cardinal Quest 2 is my current favorite. Beware though, there is no cloud save.

Wayward Souls is a really great one. Kinda steep at $7 though. But I would say it was worth it.

Caves is a really cool newer rl still being updated. It's quite interesting and fun.

Red Rogue is on android now too and plays pretty well. Not on the app store though.  Gotta get it on the devs site.

Gravebound turned out surprisingly cool with great graphics and interesting theme.

There is a really cool Retro first person dungeon crawler called questlord that comes with a roguelike mode. Pretty cool.

Card Dungeon is a pretty cool roguelike with great visuals and rather interesting mechanics.

Tales of  Viking: Volume one is a really cool hoplite-like.

Warrior heart is a simple yet prtetty fun arcade roguelike.

Crowntakers is an excellent mix of roguelike and strategy rpg.

Deadly Dungeons is a pretty fun first person roguelike though not too in depth.

Aaagh! is rather peculiar first person roguelike that has a good bit of humor and charm. Totally free too.

Most of these are not free, but worth it in my opinion. Most are reasonably priced too. Sorry for the lack of links.

I've never seen most of these mentioned either.

Since no one mentioned, Android's version of Nethack is actually pretty decent, to the point I rather play it on my cell than on the computer. Interface is good (tap to move / attack / pick, but also a bar with keys that is customizable, movement keys as a transparent layer atop the map,  etc) and I have no performance problems.

Remixed Pixel Dungeon is good too (dunno why I have the remixed and not the regular one oO)

...aaaannnddd.... 4 months late to the party, I'd like to put forth my game "Curse of Yendor", a true modern roguelike for PC and Android, which you can try for free. It's coming to Steam in 2017, and I'd like more feedback :)
