Qi Daozei
« on: November 09, 2013, 03:29:33 AM »
Qi Daozei is a an Oriental themed fantasy roguelike for T-Engine 4.  Fight creatures from folklore and legend and absorb their qi to gain new abilities while fleeing the sinister minions of the Empire and its warlocks.

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the life energy that flows through all beings and throughout the universe. You are a qi daozei – a “qi rogue” – born with the ability to absorb others' life energy. Your kind is feared and persecuted by the Empire, so for years you've hidden your gifts and tried to live a normal life among the citizenry. Now you've been discovered and must fight your way through caverns and wilderness to escape to safety, knowing that the magics and minions of the Empire are quickly closing in...

Gameplay should be fairly self-explanatory. To absorb an opponent's qi, weaken them in combat until you can kill them with your next hit, then use your "Focus Qi" technique and deliver the deathblow. Doing so will let you absorb their qi and learn a new technique. What technique you absorb depends on how you deliver the finishing blow; check in-game tooltips or right-click an enemy and choose Inspect Creature for details.

To play: Since it's a T-Engine game, you'll currently need to download a copy of ToME from http://te4.org/, then download Qi Daozei from http://te4.org/games/qdz and put it in ToME's game/modules directory.  You can also download a standalone version of Qi Daoze (no ToME needed) from https://github.com/joshkel/qdz/releases.

You can track development (and submit issues and feature requests) at https://github.com/joshkel/qdz.

The current version is small (only 5 basic monster types and 3 dungeon levels) but playable.

Comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.  (And I'm new here and am not sure if this belongs in Early Development Feedback or Announcements, so I apologize for any faux pas).

Welcome and fear not---either would've been a good place!

I approve of this project solely on the grounds that it gets us at least a step or two closer to the advent of proper Wuxia or at least blatantly Condor Hero homage-laden Roguelikes.   8)

Nice ideas. I generally shy away from T-Engine games (for silly reasons) but this one has me intrigued. I'll watch (and play) with interest to see where it goes.

Thanks!  I'm certainly planning on some wuxia elements, although I'll have to see if I can do justice to the genre or not.

*goes off to look up Condor Heroes*

I had actually started to do the game from scratch, but it's awfully nice using a pre-existing engine to lay the groundwork.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, and if you have any specific suggestions or feedback as you play, I'd love to hear them.

I recommend the Condor Heroes animated series they made in the past few years---though finding the 2nd one is tricky considering the fan translations into English stalled out a good while back.   :(

More relevant though, I would even more strongly recommend your taking some study time at the Temple of Vengeance:

So very sadly a defunct project for a long time now, but quite a showcase of potential to get some ideas spinning in this Roguelike project especially I would think.

There have been a couple of updates to Qi Daozei.  Major new features:

  • New items: meditation scrolls, scrolls of body hardening, smoke bombs, and explosive tags. Explosive tags are particularly fun to play with.
  • Critical hits:
    • Each attack has a 5% chance of knocking an opponent off balance.
    • The next attack against an off-balance opponent is an automatic critical hit. In addition to dealing 50% bonus damage, critical hits allow you to execute weapon-specific maneuvers, such as a staff sweep or spinning halberd attack.
  • Desperation attacks: When reduced to 30% health or lower, your next attack is an automatic critical hit.
  • Changes to Off-Hand Attack make learning left hand techniques easier:
    • Staffs are now classified as double weapons and so can be used with Off-Hand Attack. (Currently, double weapons only help with Off-Hand Attack; rumors exist of fighting styles that take full advantage of double weapons, but such techniques cannot be found this early in the dungeon...)
    • Off-Hand Attack's tooltip now gives more information, to help you know whether or not it can deal the finishing blow.

As always, you can download the module from http://te4.org/games/qdz.  There's now also a standalone version at https://github.com/joshkel/qdz/releases.

This version is entered into the 2013 T-Engine4 module contest.  To vote on Qi Daozei and other modules, go to http://te4.org/module-contest-2013.

Thanks!
