Omega

I started playing this recently.  It's harsh.  There isn't much information available.  Anyone have advice?

The two most readily-available versions of the game are 0.80.2 and 0.90.4.  Which should I be using?  Is one considerably more stable than the other?

One thing I was able to find is that if you join the Order of Paladins, they'll give you a free holy weapon as well as free food and healing, so it's really useful.  They'll only let you in if your alignment is lawful, even if it's only very slightly lawful, so what you want to do is go straight to the orphanage right at the start, and give them one penny.  Then the paladins will let you in.

Game_Hunter did an LP of the game; he discovers a few things, and people give a lot of advice in the comments. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLefBsUqEQ6aFT6rLsJd3DTl9AVrgAKb18

Are you sure Omega isn't yet a major roguelike? I was under the impression it was back in the 90s.

I considered posting this under major roguelikes, but regardless of how popular it was then, it's hard to find information on it now.  It isn't being talked about.

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look at it.

Personally, seeing GH use the inventory system was enough to put me off downloading the game, and also enough to make me drop all game ideas that would have involved similar contortions.

The inventory system is pretty bad.  It's kind of like ADOM's, except slower and less intuitive.

Alright, here's what I found out to help with surviving the meat grinder early game.  After getting your initial equipment together (I recommend joining the paladins for a free weapon, and unlimited food, healing, and horses) go find the archdruid.  There'll be a location on the map north of Rampart marked with an X.  It'll be surrounded by mountains.  Anyway, go there, and walk through the shrine in the north center to find a hidden area behind it.  On your left you'll see some stone walls.  Search a few times near them to get past.  Behind those are the archdruid, whom you can speak to to complete your first quest and get a bunch of experience.  The level ups you gain will make the starting dungeons a bit less impossible.

I've also heard that when you have a bank account open with money in it, there's a random chance of banking errors, which can supposedly add thousands of gold to your account, so it's probably worth keeping a single coin in an account just in case.

You can also open an account, set a password, and then log in using a different password to rob someone else's account.  This should give a few thousand gold, but you won't be able to use the bank again in the future.

This may be my favorite Rogue-style game.

my advice is to get into the thieves guild and carefully explore the sewer(under the maze). coming back to sell your stuff.
working up to robing houses.
finding the house of the eclipse is also a must.
when you feel strong enough take on the arena.
after you have victoriaix things are smooth sailing

while I have never reached the total win I have become the head of the thieves guild, the champion of the arena  and the high priest of hecate in the same game.
also killed the dragon.

I do not have a working version of it  :-[ does anyone have a build that works on modern windows?

Or maybe this:

(in the interium) I found the David Kinder version and like it quite a bit although I think I remember  being able to wear 10 rings in the original.
