Looking for a good RL with images
« on: August 16, 2012, 05:48:26 PM »
I love the classics, but recently I've been seeking a good RL that has nice graphics.

Any ideas?

Thanks

...that has nice graphics.
You're probably going to have to define "nice graphics", because once you get out of the ASCII department, there's a broad variety between graphical styles. If you want to look around for differences, I'd start by checking out the following:

Dungeons of Dredmore
POWDER
DoomRL
ToME 4
IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem)

They're all pretty different from each other, and (IMO) make good use of their graphics.

A few of the classics have tilesets, too. NetHack and Angband, in particular, have official tilesets used, and it's quite possible to download (or create) others depending on your tastes.

2013 7DRL Challenge blind-runs too!
I do roguelike LPs, usually blind. I'm always looking for criticism!

As Game Hunter mentioned, the graphics styles differ quite a bit, so what some may enjoy others will absolutely hate.

I feel compelled to mention Epilogue, but I also think the DCSS tiles are quite nice (classic roguelike) as well as Infra Arcana, which has tiles that maintain the feel of ascii graphics.

Personally, I think Tome4 and Dungeons of Dredmore have the nicest graphics in roguelikes that I have seen, but some people for instance think DoD looks awful, so you'll have to decide for yourself  :)

I wonder why so many people misspell Dredmor...

Anyway, Brogue is believed to have great ASCII (but opinions vary, as usual). I hope you have tried the tile version of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

You can also try my HyperRogue for a unique visual experience. Have you seen NotEye?

The problem with graphics is easy to solve. You just look at the screenshots and you know whether you will like it. Much harder to find a roguelike with an exceptionally good gameplay :)

If you enjoy jrpg (manga) style, I should say that Shiren the Wanderer is a splendid game with well done graphics.

Maybe LambdaRogue or ElonaPlus? I'll second DCSS. The Slimy Lichmummy has peculiar graphics so have a look at that too.
