Very interesting read.
I have to say those graphics looks great.. a reason why I usually snob tiled versions of roguelike is because 90% of the time they are in "japanese cutey" which I hate.. fighting ghosts and dragon with permadeath is serious shit.
And also this of course: "They do give you a general suggestion of how things look, but they leave enough room for the individual player’s mind to fill in the rest, which is quite powerful.".. very important factor only the best writers and directors know.
As I like to say, the mediocre directors tells, the good director shows, the great director suggests.
Games, books.. but also life, love.. it's all about immersion, nothing else.
