7DRL 2012 game talk
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:44:21 PM »
Just some references that should go in the OP (lemme know if there should be others!):

RogueBasin entry for 7DRL Challenge 2012
Temple of the Roguelike 2012 7DRL Challenge Evaluation
Game Hunter's 7DRL 2012 Challenge YouTube Playlist

It would probably be too much to make a bunch of different topics for each game that comes to mind, so I will simply create a thread where we can talk about all of them! Here's what comes to mind for me:

Infiniverse: has anyone found naturally-occurring antimatter? It doesn't seem like you could win the game in a reasonable amount of time (especially given no saving at all) without collecting some Antimatter to either sell or help for the journey towards the mysterious X at the center of the galaxy. It's possible to buy some but, frankly, it seems more cost-effective to use radioactives as fuel, and everything common is pretty darn cheap to sell.

Sword in Hand: In case some people beat it without realizing this, it's possible to play four scenarios in a single game. Whether or not the fourth shows up WILL depend on your combination of war/peace choices. To be honest, however, I found the fourth dungeon to be easier than even the second.

Drakefire Chasm: Has anyone else passed the eight dungeon level? (It's the second "boss arena".) I managed to lava-scum it but those enemies are really, really hard: it would be really nice to have a damage indicator when you examine things (even as vague as their current state that you tend to see after melee attacks would be sufficient). The twelfth level totally destroyed me, though, and it only took the enemies three turns to do it. I also have no idea how stat-gains work: part of me wants to believe it depends on your actions on the previous floor, but it doesn't seem to track like that at all.

I do roguelike LPs, usually blind. I'm always looking for criticism!

I think there's a substantial update in the works for Drakefire Chasm at the least, I'd reckon it likely to address  at least a smattering of things.

Sword in hand: I didn't finish it, but found it less interesting than both Smart Kobolds and Vicious Orcs. The whole "you are a sword"-thing doesn't really affect gameplay much, quite contrary to Jeff's stated poetics. Also, it's amusing that the readme contains a separate "author's message"-paragraph :D

Fuel: Nail on head! I get a much bigger kick out of this than either Spelunky or Cardinal Quest.

One game I'm curious about, but haven't tried (Windows only, I think), is The Well of Enchantments. Did anyone try it? What's the premise here? Crazy randarts all the way?

Pretty much, "just about anything can do just about anything", as opposed to the traditional pigeonholing that happens in terms of potential Armor effects, Weapons effects, Jewelry, etc.

I've messed around with Fuel. Seems pretty fun.

Sword in Hand seems well done but I've not gotten the hang of it yet. Because I'm just a terrible player.

hi, glad you're curious, sorry it is only windows. what platform do you prefer?
yeah, crazy randarts! zap a sandwich like a wand, eat a sword, read your boots, wear a potion.
the deeper you go, the more powers things are likely to have.
there are 72 powers total, and i don't think that includes curses.
here's a bunch of stuff aout it: http://7drl.org/?p=2841&preview=true

Drakefire Chasm: the second boss arena is indeed very hard, I usually lose there (but I have also won once). Readme claims that stat gains depend on what you eat, but I don't understand it well either.

In no particular order.

Sword in Hand; pretty awesome. Usually die on the third quest. I really appreciate the enemies being intelligent in approaching you (or not!).

Cogmind; also pretty awesome. Bugfixes really took care of the biggest peeves (item window not updating). Setting and mechanics are very original. To my giant shame I didn't figure out how to leave the starting area the first time I played.  ;D

Adventurer's Guild; nice idea, though lacking a bit in depth (and purpose). Also not a big fan of roguelikes in flash. (Or Java...)

Porta Lucis; . You're forced to play pretty safe due to your weakness, which adds nicely to the theme.

Kitchen Master; Nice setting! It's fun to use the recipes to cook up a nasty surprise for your enemies. Having to install Python yourself is a pain in the ass (and the reason I deleted it, please distribute your games as portable stand-alone packages...).

I've been pretty busy posting a 7DRL "blind-run review" nearly every day since the contest ended, so I have 40 done now, with even more coming. You can find the playlist here (which is an easy way to scan all the ones I've currently done). They're not formal reviews by any means, but you should be able to get my general impression of a given game by watching the video.
